    ANNUAL WALKING TOUR: Saturday, June 4th 2016 START TIME: 1:30 pm - The walk will start in Neil McClellan Park on the west side of Runnymede Road, across from the Runnymede subway station, and finish with refreshments at the Swansea Town Hall TOPIC: An Introduction to Swansea – Still a Community The Swansea Historical Society thankfully acknowledges funding grants from the following provincial bodies: President's Message by Bob Roden, President We have had a very eventful and exciting year, and I want to extend a sincere thank-you to all those who made it happen. The May 4 meeting was our last formal meeting before the summer break. We will start up again in October with our Annual General Meeting and elections, and we have a full slate of interesting speakers confirmed for the 2016-2017 programme year. In the meantime, we will be participating in several neighbourhood events, which we invite you to attend, including various guided historical walking tours. We hope to see you at our walking tours on June 4 and August 13, which will be led by Lance Gleich. Also, we plan to set up information tables at the Bloor West Village Sidewalk Sale on June 18 and the Montgomery's Inn Corn Roast & Heritage Fair on September 8, and we are seeking volunteers to take a shift at the SHS table for either one or both of those dates. See “Future Events” below, for more details on all of these happenings. Both Heritage Toronto (heritagetoronto.org/programs/tours) and the Royal Ontario Museum (www.rom.on.ca/en/whats-on/romwalks) offer guided walking tours throughout the season.

    CHILD & FAMILY INEQUITIES SCORE Technical Report The Child & Family Inequities Score provides a neighbourhood-level measure of the socio-economic challenges that children and families experience. The Child & Family Inequities Score is a tool to help explain the variation in socio-economic status across the City of Toronto neighbourhoods. It will help service providers to understand the context of the neighbourhoods and communities that they serve. It will also help policy makers and researchers understand spatial inequities in child and family outcomes. While other composite measures of socio-economic status in the City exist, the Child & Family Inequities Score is unique because it uses indicators that are specific to families with children under the age of 12. The Child & Family Inequities Score is a summary measure derived from indicators which describe inequities experienced by the child and family population in each of Toronto’s 140 neighbourhoods. The Child & Family Inequities Score is comprised of 5 indicators: • Low Income Measure: Percent of families with an after-tax family income that falls below the Low Income Measure. • Parental Unemployment: Percent of families with at least one unemployed parent / caregiver. • Low Parental Education: Percent of families with at least one parent / caregiver that does not have a high school diploma. • No Knowledge of Official Language: Percent of families with no parents who have knowledge of either official language (English or French). 1 • Core Housing Need: Percent of families in core housing need . This report provides technical details on how the Child & Family Inequities Score was created and describes how the resulting score should be interpreted.

    THE VALUE OF A BIA Paul Bedford FCIP, RPP, Former Toronto Chief Planner INTRODUCTION I welcome the chance to talk about one of my planning passions with you The February 17, 2017 report “ROI on BIAs” provides a series of useful performance indicators to help measure the value of a BIA My focus will be on connecting the dots and on other measures based on my 45 years of observation and interaction with BIA merchants across the City of Toronto and in my own neighbourhood People want to know what’s in it for me and for us? KEY THEMES: Why do BIAs Matter? Strategies to Strengthen BIAs A Proactive Agenda for the Future 1. WHY DO BIA’S MATTER? Main Streets are the heart and soul of most neighbourhoods and small towns! They are a defining feature of most communities that have stood the test of time Toronto Main Streets or Avenues are recognized in the Urban Structure Map of the Official Plan for their significance Official Plan designation of “Mixed-Use” with numerous supportive policies to guide development, streetscape improvements and strengthen retail vibrancy This is in direct contrast to the planning policies of the 1950’s and 1960’s that promoted the development of shopping plazas and malls To stimulate the revitalization of retail strips, Alex Ling championed the 1st BIA established in Bloor West Village in 1970 with an initial budget of $47,500 There are now 82 BIAs in Toronto representing 40,000 businesses of all sizes and types including industrial BIA’s with 2016 annual budgets ranging from $ 7K in Dovercourt Village to $ 3+ million for Bloor-Yorkville Total City of Toronto 2016 BIA levy of $26 million Total of 232 BIAs in Ontario They celebrate everything local, develop community pride and distinct identities They continuously inject financial resources into communities that help to beautify main streets Key feature of pooling financial resources to promote and improve BIA’s is common to all; however, one size or one approach doesn’t fit all! 1 2.

    Converting On-Street Parking to Active Transportation in Toronto: Two Studies of Merchant and Patron Preferences Author Nancy Smith Lea, Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation, Clean Air Partnership 75 Elizabeth Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5G 1P4 Email: [email protected] Co-Authors Jennifer Forkes Fred Sztabinski Abstract In 2008 and 2009, Clean Air Partnership (CAP) conducted two research studies on Bloor Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. These studies were designed to determine the public acceptability and potential economic implications of reallocating road space from on-street parking to widened sidewalks or bike lanes. CAP released two in-depth research reports (2009, 2010) about these studies. This paper summarizes the main findings of each. In July of 2008, 61 merchants and 538 patrons on Bloor Street in the Annex neighbourhood of downtown Toronto were surveyed. In July of 2009, the study was replicated on the same street but in a different location further from the downtown: 96 merchants and 510 patrons on Bloor Street in Bloor West Village were surveyed. Overall support for changes in street use allocation was greater in the Bloor Annex neighbourhood than Bloor West Village. However in both neighbourhoods, the majority of merchants believed that changes to accommodate an increase in pedestrian or cyclist infrastructure would increase or would not change their daily number of customers. In both neighbourhoods, walking was the dominant reported mode of travel to Bloor Street (46% of the patrons surveyed in both study areas). Bicycling was more common in the Annex, and driving was more common in Bloor West Village. In terms of patron preferences for changes to street use allocation, bike lanes were preferred over widened sidewalks in both neighbourhoods.
