We recently welcomed home EODMU-2 after completing a very successful, and extended, deployment to U.S. 5th Fleet, and look forward to EODMU-6's achievements as they continue the mission. As the Navy transitions through the COVID pandemic, continue to do your part to follow health protection conditions and CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of this disease. Looking into the future, the Navy EOD Strategic Plan 2030 will be released in August in conjunction with Navy EOD's 79th birthday. The plan lays out a 10-year strategic framework to address steps needed to generate the future force in an era of great power competition. As we enable the fight for sea control and freedom to maneuver Joint Forces, this plan will set conditions for the continued success of our organization. The successful launch of STRIKE, previously called EOD Force Resiliency Program (FRP), in July is a key element to enable further development of the force. -

Generated on 2019FEB14 RefID: B-1240A2B FY 2020 Program Acquisition Costs by Weapon System Major Weapon Systems Overview The performance of United States (U.S.) weapon systems are unmatched, ensuring that U.S. military forces have a tactical combat advantage over any adversary in any environmental situation. The Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 acquisition (Procurement and Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E)) funding requested by the Department of Defense (DoD) totals $247.3 billion, which includes funding in the Base budget and the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) fund, totaling $143.1 billion for Procurement and $104.3 billion for RDT&E. The funding in the budget request represents a balanced portfolio approach to implement the military force objective established by the National Defense Strategy. Of the $247.3 billion in the request, $83.9 billion finances Major Defense Acquisition Programs (MDAPs), which are acquisition programs that exceed a cost threshold established by the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment. Those ships, which will sail in the Jones Act trade, are the Palmetto State (photo at right), the El Coqui (second photo below) and the American Freedom (immediately below). As re- ported there and elsewhere in this edition, three new SIU-contracted vessels recently were launched at shipyards on all three sea coasts. There’s no way companies would make those kinds of invest- ments in domestic American-flag shipping without the Jones Act – a law that has served our nation extremely well for nearly a century. Old salts probably know the essentials of America’s freight cabotage law, but for any newcomers, the Jones Act requires that cargo moving between domestic ports is carried aboard ships that are crewed, built, flagged and owned American. -

The U.S. maritime industry publicly recognized the merchant mariners responsible for safe ship operations at the Annual Safety Awards Luncheon held at the Hilton Riverside Hotel on June 8, 2016. Nearly Two Hundred (200) people, representing 80 companies, attended the annual industry-sponsored event. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announces the results of the 2015 Jones F. Devlin Awards. These awards are given to the men and women manning vessels that have operated for at least two years without a seafarer involved in a lost-time injury. Kathy Metcalf, CSA President said: “We have been holding these annual award ceremonies since 1958. This was the Fifty-eighth Anniversary of the program. For that initial year, we honored six vessels having a total of twelve years operation with no lost-time incidents. This year, awards were conferred on 1522 vessels that operated 10,084 years without a lost-time incident. This extraordinary record is directly attributable to the professionalism of our seafarers and the dedication of shore-based company personnel to safe operation. These mariners are the front line in ensuring the safe and environmentally responsible operation of the vessels on which they serve and CSA extends its congratulations to these mariners and their shore-based partners for a job well done.” Recipients of the 2015 Jones F.
