Rock Climbing “cragging” (A rock-climbers' term for a cliff or group of cliffs, in any location, which is or may be suitable for climbing) in NJ is limited by access. Climbing access in NJ is constrained by topography, weather, the environment and other variables. Climbing encounters access issues . with private landowners, municipalities, State and Federal Governments, watershed authorities and other landowners and managers of the States natural resources. The motives and impacts of climbers are not distinct from hikers, bikers, nor others who use NJ's open space areas. Climbers like these others, seek urban escape, nature appreciation, wildlife observation, exercise and a variety of other enriching outcomes when we use the resources of the New Jersey’s State Parks and Forests (Steve Matous, Access Fund Director, March 2004). -

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease with Initial Right Hemiparesis Masquerading As
CASE Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with initial right REPORT hemiparesis masquerading as a stroke KF Ko 高貴護 WY Lau 劉永欣 The early stage of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is generally characterised by progressive WK Cheng 鄭永強 changes in behaviour and intellectual function. While only a few patients have stroke-like MC Kwan 關緬中 onset, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with initial monoparesis has been described. In this report, a LK Yip 葉麗娟 patient with an unusual sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with typical magnetic resonance imaging findings, positive cerebrospinal fluid 14-3-3 brain protein, sharp-wave complexes in electroencephalogram, and initial right hemiparesis is reported. Introduction Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most common human prion disease.1 While between 10% and 15% of cases are familial and a small number are iatrogenic, most (85%) are sporadic. The early stage of sporadic CJD is characterised by changes in behaviour and intellectual function, often followed by ataxia, abnormality of vision, and myoclonic jerks involving either a limb or the entire body.2 The minority of cases may have atypical presentations with abrupt onset and prolonged progression.3,4 However, CJD presenting with initial neurological symptoms and signs masquerading as a stroke is exceptional.5 Previously, CJD with initial monoparesis has been reported.6 In this report, a patient with CJD presenting with right hemiparesis is described. Case report A 60-year-old woman presented in January 2009 with a 2-week history of right-sided weakness and associated difficulty in writing (she was right-handed). She was also found to be increasingly irritable, with poor concentration and memory. -

The Nature of Boulder-Rich Deposits in the Upper Big Flat Brook Drainage, Sussex County, New Jersey
Middle States Geographer, 2009, 42: 33-43 THE NATURE OF BOULDER-RICH DEPOSITS IN THE UPPER BIG FLAT BROOK DRAINAGE, SUSSEX COUNTY, NEW JERSEY Gregory A. Pope, Andrew J. Temples, Sean I. McLearie, Joanne C. Kornoelje, and Thomas J. Glynn Department of Earth & Environmental Studies Montclair State University 1 Normal Avenue Montclair, New Jersey, 07043 ABSTRACT: The upper reaches of the Big Flat Brook drainage, northwest of Kittatinny Mountain, contain a variety of glacial, pro-glacial, and periglacial deposits from the Late Quaternary. The area is dominated by recessional moraines and ubiquitous ground moraine, along with meltwater deposits, drumlins, and possible post- glacial periglacial features. We have identified a curious boulder-rich deposit in the vicinity of Lake Ocquittunk and Lake Wapalanne on upper Big Flat Brook. The area where these boulder deposits occur is mapped (1:24,000 surficial geology) as till. As mapped and observed, larger cobbles and boulders within the till are quartz-pebble conglomerate, quartzite, sandstone, and shale. The boulder-rich deposits differ from the typical till, however. Unlike the local till, which is more mixed in lithology, the boulder deposits are nearly exclusively Shawangunk conglomerate. The deposits are discontinuous, but appear to occur at a topographic level above the meltwater stream terraces. The boulders in the deposits lie partially embedded in soil, but are very closely spaced. The boulders range in size from ~20cm to over 100cm, and present a subrounded to subangular shape. There appears to be a fabric orientation of the boulders, NE-SW, with subsidiary orientations. As the boulder deposits differ from other mapped features in the area, we attempt to ascertain the origin for the deposits. -
