Adjusting our focus, we mainly concentrated on expanding our already solid transatlantic collaboration in the economic and commercial sphere and were pleased to declare with our U.S. partners our mutual understanding and interest to support and further develop these ties. In December, the Czech Republic and the United States officially launched the Economic and Commercial Dialogue during the visit of Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Martin Kocourek to Washington, D.C. In keeping with this new wave of pursuit to intensify and strengthen our countries’ bilateral trade relationship, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg will lead a trade mission of Czech companies from the information technology, energy, film, and public transpor- tation industries to California and Texas this upcoming spring of 2011. A second mission is also tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2011, aimed at visiting the southeastern United States. We are looking forward to establishing further business development, promoting trade with new partners, Photo courtesy of Mary E. Fetzko and encouraging innovation. Moreover, last December, the United States and the Czech Republic signed a joint declaration concerning industrial and commercial cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, thereby agreeing to further promote commercial col- laboration on nuclear energy development and encourage scientific and research cooperation. Businesses and scientists from both countries will thus spend this year exploring the possibilities of intensive, bilateral collaboration. Also in 2011, the Embassy of the Czech Republic is planning its annual, large Mutual Inspirations Festival to celebrate the traditional and vivid Czech – US cultural inspiration. The Mutual Inspirations Festival 2011 - Antonin Dvorak will commemorate the Czech Republic’s most famous, world-renowned composer beginning on September 8, 2011, marking the 170th anniversary of Antonin Dvorak’s birth. We welcome you to visit the Embassy’s web pages in the coming months for more information on concerts, symposiums, and other events centered in the most revered intellectual, spiritual, and cultural spheres of Washington, D.C. Of course, our transatlantic economic, commercial, and cultural friendship thrives because the United States remains a key partner and ally for the Czech Republic. In 2011, we will continue to cooperate as member states of NATO and partners within the EU-US framework. During the next round of our Strategic Dialogue, we will discuss not only bilateral relations but also current foreign policy issues such as Middle East, Eastern Partnership, or Afghanistan. As always, I am grateful for your ongoing support of our valued friendship and wish everyone a fruitful and successful year! • Iucn Mission to Tatra National Park, Republic of Slovakia, April 2005
IUCN MISSION TO TATRA NATIONAL PARK, REPUBLIC OF SLOVAKIA, APRIL 2005 REPORT BY: ROGER CROFTS, MARIJA ZUPANCIC-VICAR, TAMAS MARGHESCU, AND ZENON TEDERKO 1 2 IUCN-THE WORLD CONSERVATION UNION MISSION TO TATRA NATIONAL PARK, SLOVAKIA, APRIL 2005 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS A 6 day IUCN mission was undertaken in April 2005 at the request of Slovakian Members of IUCN, both government and non-government. The main purpose was to assess the status of the Tatra National Park (TANAP) against the IUCN Categories for Protected Area Management, in particular IUCN Category II. In addition, the aftermath of the windblow of November 2004 raises issues about the status of the Park and the widely different propositions for management of the windblown areas, ranging from strict management to tourist development. We had discussions with a wide range of interests and authorities: state, regional, district and municipal levels of government, state forestry and national park bodies, environmental NGOs and private forestry interests. In addition, we read all of the documentation available in English. We conclude that there is no clear authority and specifically no overall management authority for the Park, there is no comprehensive strategy or management plan or formal provision for the preparation of such documents, the current approved zonation system is inadequate, and the layers of government from national to municipal level provide confusion and inconsistency to all bodies involved. In addition, we noted the highly polarised views about the future management and use of the key parts of the area, including its core, following the windblow of November 2004, which affected some 12,000ha of the Park.

  • Going Everywhere and Nowhere from Moscow to the Urals – How Curatorial Delusions of Global Grandeur Betray Russian Art
GOING EVERYWHERE AND NOWHERE FROM MOSCOW TO THE URALS – HOW CURATORIAL DELUSIONS OF GLOBAL GRANDEUR BETRAY RUSSIAN ART BY SIMON HEWITT I : A MOSCOW MIRED IN MEMORIES A BANNER was dangling from the giant triumphal portico of VDNKh, beneath the two collective farmworkers brandishing their bale of straw. It advertised the 6th Moscow Biennale – the number 6 allotted spiralling arms to resemble a Catherine Wheel. But the banner was challenged by a bigger hoarding wheeled on to the piazza below, blowing the trumpet of a separate festival called Circle of Light . The Biennale’s main show was taking place just behind Lenin in VDNKh’s Central Pavilion (also known as Pavilion N°1), erected in 1954 and topped by a 350-foot spire modelled on the St Petersburg Admiralty. The Biennale was meant to open at noon. I tried to find the entrance but couldn’t. There were no signs. No information about where and when the Biennale could be visited. Yuri Albert’s immortal line breezed through my mind: The Biennale cannot and will not take place . The 6 th Moscow Biennale had been having well-publicized financial problems. Was it so bankrupt that it had ceased to exist, morphing instead into a Conceptualist joke? VDNKh, six miles north of Red Square, was the sixth venue for the Moscow Biennale’s main exhibition. It had previously been held in the former Lenin Museum near Red Square; the under-construction Federation Tower at Moscow City; the newly restored Garage (now Jewish) Museum during its brief Abramovich/Zhukova tenancy; the renovated ArtPlay cultural and commercial complex; and, in 2013, the Manezh.

The TATRA 87 was produced between 1937 and 1950. It was a timeless car with an aerodynamic self- supporting body and an eight-cylinder engine mounted at the rear. The material analysis was carried out on four pieces of historical outer door handles of different ages and conditions. These were door handle lent by the ECORRA s. r. o. company. The chemical composition of all four door handles was detected with an X-ray spectrometer using the ED-XRF method, which could be performed without significant damage to these historical pieces. In addition, other methods were used for two samples of door handles, namely the glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) and metallographic analysis, which were, however, associated with destructive preparation of samples. It was found that four of the door handles samples used for the same type of car had different finishes.

  • Press Clips December 20, 2014
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 20, 2014 Avalanche-Sabres Preview By Jeff Mezydlo Associated Press December 19, 2014 Though the Buffalo Sabres' longest winning streak of the season has ended, their confidence remains high. Eagerly looking to get back on track, the Sabres try to end their struggles against the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. Buffalo (13-17-2) totaled 14 goals during a four-game winning streak but showed little offensive punch in Tuesday's 5-1 loss at Winnipeg. "You never like to lose but it's almost a reminder that you have to be at your best, have to be sharp," said defenseman Josh Gorges, who hopes to return Saturday after missing the last two games with an apparent finger injury. "We'll be ready for the next one." The defeat was only the fourth in 14 games for the Sabres, who believe it's just a blip on the screen. "Confidence is a major thing in sports, and in general," forward Patrick Kaleta said. "Confidence is big for us. The older guys have to put it in the minds of the younger guys that it's just a speed bump and everything is all right. "You come together as a team and you don't dwell on it. Learn from the game, move on and get better." The Sabres need to shore up defensively after allowing 15 goals in four games and at least three for the sixth time in the last seven. Nikita Zadorov's power-play goal late in the first period opened the scoring, but was all Buffalo could muster on 28 shots.

  • NUDNIK Forgetting Josef Ganz Rémy Markowitsch
NUDNIK Forgetting Josef Ganz Rémy Markowitsch Maikäfer (From the Photo Archive of Josef Ganz, 1930-1933) Rémy Markowitsch Nudnik: Forgetting Josef Ganz Combining sculptural and multimedia works and archival ma- terials, the spatially expansive installation Nudnik: Forgetting Josef Ganz by Swiss artist Rémy Markowitsch deals with the Jewish engineer and journalist Josef Ganz. The artist presented his works in a cabinet space with two connecting corridors at the 2016 exhibition Wolfsburg Unlimited: A City as World La- boratory, the first show curated by Ralf Beil at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg. The work consists not just of an aesthetic transfe- rence of Ganz’s photographic negatives and written documents to a presentation of large prints or as a video, but by way of the artist’s associative approach represents, as it were, the transil- lumination and “defoliation” of the history of a major figure in the automobile industry of the twentieth century, a figure ba- rely known until now. The processes of defoliation and transillumination, ex- posing hidden narratives, (material) conditions, and webs of relations, are defining aspects of Rémy Markowitsch’ s artistic approach. Driven in his work by certain stories, biographies, and literatures, since 1993 the artist has revealed the results of his research in photographic transilluminations. Just as the term from the realm of radiology describes, the relevant motif is penetrated, x-rayed, and superimposed with a different mo- tif. At the very moment when the photographic images shift from an opaque to a lucid state, they overlap one another. In Moving Forward so doing, the support material moves to the foreground, mat- rix dots become visible as grains and the representation is no longer focused on the act of illustration, but encourages simul- taneous examination.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips February 26, 2015 NHL fines Sabres goalie Neuvirth for diving vs. Predators Associated Press February 25, 2015 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The NHL has fined Buffalo Sabres goalie Michal Neuvirth $2,000 for diving and embellishment after drawing a penalty in a game against the Nashville Predators last weekend. The disciplinary action announced on Wednesday was a second offense for Neuvirth. The first offense merited a warning, and occurred during a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 15. Fines increase with each instance up to $5,000 following a fifth offense. The punishment came after the league's Hockey Operations Department reviewed an interference penalty called against Nashville's Mike Santorelli early in the second period of the Predators' 2-1 shootout win. In a separate move, Buffalo returned rookie defenseman Jake McCabe to AHL Rochester. The Sabres had the day off, and host Vancouver on Thursday. Canucks-Sabres preview Associated Press February 25, 2015 Buffalo will have to wait until next season to welcome Ryan Miller back to town. It might also be that long before Sabres All-Star Zemgus Girgensons sees the ice again. With both injured, Miller's surging Vancouver Canucks look to conclude an already successful five-game trip with a third straight victory Thursday night against Buffalo. Miller made 20 saves in a 5-2 win over the Sabres (18-38-5) on Jan. 30, but won't be available in his first trip to Buffalo since the club traded him to St. Louis one year ago Sunday.
