    At Sunday July 16th 4:00-6:00 p.m. "When we first heard these two artists play together at Woody Fest, we were so impressed. Each presented his own kind of writing and image, but together they were like water and fire. Kevin wore white flowing clothes and his song, 'Come a Rain', created an aura of wisdom that can only come from a seasoned songwriter. Dustin wore black jeans and a hat and his song, 'Two Horses', unleashed Kevin Welch & the youthful need for both a wildness and steadiness that must dwell in each of us." ~ Faye Wedell and Scott Lipsett. Dustin Welch Iconic Father + Gifted Son = Dynamic Duo We've been trying since 2013 and have finally booked these two singer-songwriters extraordinaire. Kevin — After one semester of music school in Edmond, Oklahoma, Kevin joined a bluegrass band, dropped out of school, and hit the road. He traveled a honkytonk circuit for five years. Then he got married, moved to Nashville where he wrote songs for ten years, starting in 1978. Kevin made two records with Warner Bros — 'Kevin Welch' in 1990 and 'Western Beat' in 1992 — before he and some of his buddies (Kieran Kane, Harry Stinson, Mike Henderson, Tammy Rogers) started their own label, Dead Reckoning Records. They released 21 records over the next seven years, toured individually and also together as a collective called A Night Of Reckoning (with Fats Kaplin and Allison Prestwood) through the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Europe, and Canada. Starting in 2000, Kevin teamed up again with Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin, recording and touring.

King then leads the album towards a quieter, more contemplative place for “Frozen Sky,” giving us the first glimpse of what becomes a country-inflected Americana folk album of uncommon grace. Her performance here quickly reveals deeper, darker complexities – both in her vocal range, and in her way with a narrative. Composing new words atop a traditional melody, Fitzgerald brilliantly conveys the shattering tale of empty gestures and false promises – all from the point of view of the cold male lover. “No Drinkin’ Alone” has an appropriately woozy wail, and works almost as an answer song to “Frozen Sky.” Her broken main character, lamenting that “I guess forever meant never,” ultimately discovers a feeling as empty as that wine bottle resting at the bottom of a trash can. Fitzgerald remains in a ruminative mood for “You Won’t Say No,” but as she’s joined by stratospheric backing vocals of Thom Flora, the song moves from beatific reverie into a theme that’s both beautiful, and girding. The love shared in this song is so deep, and so special, that’s its almost familial – like siblings, holding hands and knowing what the other will say before it’s ever uttered.

Not the stupid industry buzz that suits create when they wanna launch their latest product with expensive showcases, no. The kind of buzz that gets people of all ages and types to a show because something undeniable and thrilling in some way is about to go down. When The SteelDrivers started quietly doing some gigs to test the waters and work up some songs onstage, the word spread quickly that blues legend and songwriter Mike Henderson had started a Bluegrass band with Richard Bailey (many people's favorite banjoist, so melodious is his approach) and outstanding fiddler Tammy Rogers, with veteran Mike Fleming on upright bass. And everybody was talking about their singer, a hit-songwriting powerhouse vocalist from Kentucky named Chris Stapleton. The rooms filled up quickly, and the college kids went nuts for it, too. Then came the IBMA's, the annual Bluegrass convention, where they showed up and got scooped up by Rounder Records. A short time later, here is first their record, and it rocks!, people. I'm very excited to see and hear their ASCAP release on January 15th. Omigod, that's today! I will see it and hopefully shoot a little video at 3 p.m., and maybe we'll have a few video clips for you at the end of the interview.     A Conversation with Kevin Welch by Frank Goodman (11/2007, Puremusic.com) Kane Welch Kaplin is a folk group made up of two great singer songwriters (Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch), multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin, and Kieran's percussionist son, Lucas. When you think about it, it's strange there aren't more folk groups around, when Bluegrass or Old Timey music by necessity spawn seemingly endless ensembles. But in singer songwriter world, it's possible and it's commonsensical to tour solo, or duo. And as a duo is how it began, after the O'Kanes broke up for Kieran and Kevin began using him as a session man. But all that and the further evolution of the lineup and modus operandi of this compelling quartet is detailed in the relaxed and deadpan Oklahoma delivery of Kevin Welch in the conversation to come. It's a very artistic group, without being consciously so. That is, each of the three seasoned guys have done so many things and been artists already for so long, that a great deal of experienced spontaneity erupts during a KWK show that's not much like the aforementioned acoustic groups at all. It's more about the song, the atmosphere, and the chemistry, and the room. It's more vibe-y. And as Kevin points out, they don't talk about it, not at all. I don't know much about Lucas, except that what he adds as the youngest member of the group musically is very tasteful, and crucial. The other three are well known to me as a longtime Nashvillian, and are, to a man, deep as a well.
