In particular, we show that henselian valuation rings with finite or Hilbertian residue field are uniformly ∃-∅-definable in LMac, and henselian valuation rings with value group Z are uniformly ∃∀-∅-definable in the ring language, but not uniformly ∃-∅-definable in LMac. We apply these results to local fields Qp and Fp((t)), as well as to higher dimensional local fields. 1. Introduction The question of definability of henselian valuation rings in their quotient fields goes back at least to Julia Robinson, who observed that the ring of p-adic integers Zp can be characterized inside the field of p-adic numbers Qp purely algebraically, for example, for odd prime numbers p as 2 2 Zp = {x ∈ Qp :(∃y ∈ Qp)(y =1+px )}. This definition of the henselian valuation ring of the local field Qp is existential (or diophantine) and parameter-free (∃-∅, for short), and it depends on p. For the local fields Fp((t)), an existential parameter-free definition of the henselian valuation ring Fp[[t]] is much less obvious and was given only recently in [1]. Also this definition depends heavily on p. Of particular importance in this subject and in applications to diophantine geometry and the model theory of fields is the question whether there are uniform definitions, for example, of Zp in Qp independent of p, and how complex such definitions have to be. -

Equity Research 3 May 2018 European Telecom Services INDUSTRY UPDATE The rise of the Wholesale-Only model European Telecom Services Until recently it was almost unthinkable that any company would consider creating POSITIVE a third expensive parallel Telecom infrastructure, competing with EU incumbents Unchanged and cable, given the high barrier to entry/cost of rollout, relatively stable competition plus mature nature of the industry. However, we are now seeing European Telecom Services strategic moves across a number of European markets, with Open Fiber in Italy the Maurice Patrick highest profile case study, and others following. In this detailed report we analyse +44 (0)20 3134 3622 Open Fiber’s prospects, its key success factors, and identify risks to other EU [email protected] markets. In this momentous year we have largely completed our merger activities, driven customer satisfaction and market share to all-time highs in virtually all of our markets, made our shops more interactive and exciting while becoming ever more competitive with pure-play retailers, launched a new joint venture in the US, launched a new UK mobile network, and embarked on an ambitious property plan in the UK and Ireland. We also had our biggest ever trading day on Black Friday last year. We are far from done, though. We have very ambitious plans this year which include making every one of the former Dixons stores one of the new 3-in-1 shops, introducing a lively and interactive new e-Commerce platform to Carphone Warehouse, opening Europe’s most modern distribution centre in Sweden, introducing same-day delivery, rolling out c.150 new stores in the US with Sprint, delivering our honeyBee platform to major global clients, launching our new home services division with a mandate to become a true emergency service for customers across the UK, and continuing to drive market share, price competitiveness and customer satisfaction everywhere. It is likely to be busy. I am truly grateful to all of my colleagues – right across the world – for their hard work and dedication.
