She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics, a Master of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Space Physics from Rice University. Walker began her professional career at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in 1987 as a Robotics Flight Controller for the Space Shuttle Program. In 2010, she served as Flight Engineer for Expedition 24/25, a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station that lasted 163 days. Walker most recently served as mission specialist on the on the Crew-1 SpaceX Crew Dragon, named Resilience, which landed May 2, 2021. She also served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 64. Personal Data: Born June 4, 1965 in Houston, Texas. Married to astronaut Andy Thomas. Recreational interests include cooking, running, weight training, camping and travel. Her mother, Sherry Walker, resides in Houston, Texas. Her father, Robert Walker, is deceased. Education: Graduated from Westbury Senior High, Houston, Texas, in 1983; received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Rice University in 1987; received a Master of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Space Physics from Rice University in 1992 and 1993, respectively. NASA Experience: Dr. Walker began her professional career with the Rockwell Space Operations Company at the Johnson Space Center in 1987 as a Robotics Flight Controller for the Space Shuttle Program. She worked Space Shuttle missions as a Flight Controller in the Mission Control Center, including STS-27, STS-32, STS-51, STS-56, STS-60, STS-61, and STS-66. -

Press Release Patterson helps prepare astronauts for future visit to asteroid (October 13, 2011) Professor Mark Patterson of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, an aquanaut with several previous trips to “inner space” aboard the Aquarius underwater habitat, will assist a team of NASA astro- nauts as they visit the habitat from October 17-29 to develop techniques for a planned future trip to an asteroid. Patterson is part of the science support team for NEEMO 15—the latest mission of the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations project. NEEMO sends groups of NASA astronauts and engineers to live in the Aquarius undersea research station as training for work in the weightlessness of outer space. Patterson, Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory at VIMS, is a pioneer in the development and use of underwa- ter robots for marine research. POSTER ABSTRACTS A CACHE WITHIN A CACHE: DESCRIPTION OF ARTIFACTS FOUND INSIDE AN ABALONE CONTAINER IN THE REDWOOD BOX CACHE, SAN NICOLAS ISLAND, CALIFORNIA. Amira F. The boxes were discovered in association with two asphaltum covered water bottles with basketry impressions, a small sandstone bowl, and various ecofacts eroding from a notch on a cliff edge. An “abalone container” was found inside the West box and is the subject of this poster. The abalone container cache consists of 18 artifacts and two unmodified shells placed inside of two large black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii) shells. Siphon holes of the larger H. cracherodii shell were plugged with asphaltum while the other H. cracherodii shell had the epidermis completely ground off. The plugged abalone shell was used as a container and the abalone shell lacking epidermis was placed on top as a cover. The artifacts found inside this shell container include: two eccentric red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) circular fishhooks, three shell pendants, an abalone (Haliotis sp.) button, two bird bone pendants, one soapstone bead, one steatite bead, a piece of chlorite displaying striations, and seven projectile points. -

Thompson, Retired President and CEO of Orbital ATK, as the 2019 National Space Trophy Recipient. NOMINATED Mr. Thompson was nominated for the award by Captain Frank Culbertson (U.S. Thompson Photo Thompson Navy, Retired) of Northrop Grumman Corporation. Mr. Culbertson selected Thomp- Thompson’s boyhood rocketry son for “four decades of outstanding leadership and pioneering innovations in the culminated in a high school project development and operation of launch vehicles and satellite systems, which have that launched small monkeys to mile-high altitudes in 1972. transformed scientific, exploratory, commercial and defense applications of space.” EDUCATION AND EARLY CAREER Thompson earned his B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a M.S. in Aeronautics from Caltech, and an MBA from Har- vard Business School. Design Challenge
International Space Station Design Challenge CELERE Capillary Effects on Liquids Exploratory Research Experiments http://spaceflightsystems.grc.nasa.gov/CELERE/ https://www.facebook.com/NASA.celere WHAT? The design challenge is a joint educational program of NASA and Portland State University (PSU) enabling students to participate in microgravity research on capillary action related to that conducted on the International Space Station (ISS). Students create their own experiments using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) with a provided template and tutorial for DraftSight software, which can be downloaded for free. Experiment proposals, which each consist of a single CAD drawing and short entry form, are e-mailed to NASA. The test cells are then manufactured by PSU using the drawings and a computer-controlled laser cutter. Each experiment is conducted in PSU’s Dryden Drop Tower, in which it falls 22 meters (73 feet) and experiences 2.1 seconds of apparent near weightlessness, i.e., microgravity. Video and still images from each drop are provided online for student analysis and the reporting of results, for example in a science fair or class presentation. The image below shows an example experiment (from Columbus, Georgia) during the middle of the drop, where the oil’s upward motion is clearly slowed by the scalloped channel wall (in the right channel). WHO? The design challenge is for students in grades 8-12, who may participate as individuals or in teams of any size. Teams may include younger students as long as there is at least one team member in grades 8-12, where this option can facilitate the participation of informal science clubs, Scouts, etc. -

NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) PERSONAL DATA: Born December 18, 1951, in Adelaide, South Australia. Married to Astronaut Shannon Walker. He enjoys horse riding and jumping, mountain biking, running, wind surfing, and classical guitar playing. His father, Adrian C. Thomas, resides in Hackham, South Australia. His mother, Mary E. Thomas, resides in North Adelaide, South Australia. EDUCATION: Received a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with First Class Honors, from the University of Adelaide, South Australia, in 1973, and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Adelaide, South Australia, in 1978. ORGANIZATIONS: Honorary Fellow, The Institution of Engineers Australia. EXPERIENCE: Dr. Thomas began his professional career as a research scientist with the Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company, Marietta, Georgia, in 1977. At that time, he was responsible for experimental investigations into the control of fluid dynamic instabilities and aircraft drag. In 1980, he was appointed Principal Aerodynamic Scientist to the company and headed a research team examining various problems in advanced aerodynamics and aircraft flight test. This was followed in 1983, by an appointment as the head of the Advanced Flight Sciences Department to lead a research department of engineers and scientists engaged in experimental and computational studies in fluid dynamics, aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. He was also manager of the research laboratory, the wind tunnels, and the test facilities used in these studies. In 1987, Dr. Thomas was named manager of Lockheed’s Flight Sciences Division and directed the technical efforts in vehicle aerodynamics, flight controls and propulsion systems that supported the company’s fleet of production aircraft. -

In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space. Sally Ride joined NASA in 1978 and five years later she became the first female American astronaut to fly in space. Tereshkova and Ride's accomplishments profoundly impacted space exploration and paved the way for the dozens of other women who became astronauts, and the hundreds of thousands more who pursued careers in science and technology. These advancements have greatly affected science, technology and space travel, but women in exploration still have a long way to go. Social constructs and gender expectations have often discouraged women from pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and women who do pursue one of these paths are often faced with discrimination throughout their career.
