Questions 1-4: Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow by choosing the right answer from the options given along with each question.

Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. He has secured a life long source of pleasure, instruction and inspiration. So long as he has his beloved books, he need never feel lonely. He always has a pleasant occupation of leisure moments, so that he need never feel bored. He is the possessor of wealth more precious than gold. Ruskin calls books,“Kings’ Treasures” – treasuries filled, not with gold and silver and precious stones but with riches much more valuable than these -- knowledge, noble thoughts and high ideals. Poor indeed is the man who does not read, and empty is his life.

Books are the most faithful of friends. Our friends may change, or die; but our books are always patiently waiting to talk to us. They are never cross, peevish, or unwilling to converse, as our friends sometimes are. No wonder a reader becomes a “book- lover”.

Paper -1 Part D English Question No 35 to 44

Read the following passage and answer the questions 1 to 4

Garbage is a great environment hazard. It comes from various sources – used paper, plastic bags, ice-cream wrappers, bottle caps, fallen leaves from trees and many more. Garbage makes the premises ugly, unkempt and breeds diseases. A lot of trash that is thrown away contains material that can be recycled and reused such as paper, metals and glass which can be sent to the nearest recycling centre or disposed to the junk dealer. It also contains organic matter such as leaves which can enrich soil fertility. A compost pit can be made at a convenient location where the refuse can be placed with layers of soil and an occasional sprinkling of water. PAPER 1 - PART D English Question No 35 to 44

Questions 35-39: Read the comprehension and answer the following: Anna, an English school teacher is employed by the King of Siam to teach his children in a Buddhist temple . Anna was telling the children about her own long – ago trip through Egypt, when they suddenly fell from the roof above her head onto the center of the map, which she stretched on the table, a coil of something that she looked at first like a thick silk board neatly rolled into a ball. In an other instant, the coil unrolled itself, began to move slowly away. Anna screamed and forgetting her dignity fled to the far end of the temple expecting the children to follow her. When she turned, she was amazed to see all the royal pupils sitting quietly on their seats in an attitude of respect. Not a child had moved or made a sound. The temple was still. All the children’s eyes were fixed on the snake as it moved in lazy curves along the entire length of the table. With a feeling of shame Anna returned to her seat to watch it. She even managed to share a little of the children’s fascination as she looked into the clear eyes of the snakes. She had never seen one like it. The snake moved on its slow way down the table. To Anna each second seemed an hour. She held her breath in terror as it dropped from the table to the arm of the chair of prince Chingchorn. What if the child moved and the snake struck? She had a doubt that her own life would be taken in a moment if the young prince went to die under her care. She wanted to call out to him to hold perfectly still, but no sound came. She need not have worried, for he sat as motionless as Buddha gleaming in the twilight behind him. Anna could not swallow or breathe until she saw the snake glide from the chair and crawl through the corridor and down the steps and finally out of sight. Then she almost fainted with relief. 35. Paper 1 - Part – D English Question No 35 to 44

Questions 35 - 44 : Read the passage and answer the following questions from given options. When imaginative men turn their eyes toward space and wonder whether life exist in any part of it, they may cheer themselves by remembering that life need not resemble closely the life that exist on earth. Mars looks like only planet where life ours could exist and even this doubtful. Even more interesting is the possibility that life on other planets may be in a more advanced stage of evolution. Present day is in a peculiar and probably fleeting stage. His individual units retain a strong sense of personality. They are in fact, still capable under favorable circumstances of leading lives. But man’s societies already sufficiently developed to have enormously more power and effectiveness than the individuals have. It is not likely that this transitional situation will continue very long on the evolutionary time scale. Fifty thousand years from now his societies may have become too close. Knit that the individuals become too close. Knit that the individuals retain no sense of seperate personality. Then little distinction will retain between the organic parts of the multiple organism and the inorganic parts that have been constructed by it. A million years further on and a million years is a tick of the clock on the evolutionary time scale man and his machines may have merged as closely as the muscles of the human body and nerve cells that actuate them. The explorers of space should be prepared for some such situations. If they arrive on a foreign planet when its living organism is in an earlier stage of evolution, they may find the equivalent of dinosaurs or mollusks or even one celled protozoa. They could live on very hot and cold planets. They could breathe any atmosphere or none. They could build their bodies to any desirable planet’s crust. They could get their energy from sunlight. Such creatures might be relics of a bygone age, many millions of years ago, when their planet was favorable to the origin of life or they might be immigrants from favoured planets. 35) If they arrive on a foreign planet, a) they may find the equivalent of dinosaurs. b) they might find the equivalent of dinosaurs. c) they may found the equivalent of dinosaurs. d) they might found the equivalent of dinosaurs. 36) Find out the synonym of the word ‘antique’ a) Evolution b) Relic c) Immigrants d) Material 37) A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country a) Immigrant b) Emigrant c) Favorable circumstance d) Effectiveness 38) Mars look like the only planet ………….. life like ours could exist. a) when b) which c) where d) what 39) Identify the describing word from the passage a) resemble b) capable c) effectiveness d) enormously 40) Identify the correct sentence: a) Either the stars or the moon give us light at night b) Not only the stars but also the moon give us light at night c) The stars and the moon gives us light at night d) The moon as well as the stars gave us light at night 41) Find out the idiom that conveys the meaning ‘milestone’ a) It is a piece of cake b) break a leg c) a feather in one’s cap d) break the eyes 42) Choose the correctly spelt word. a) abruptly b) apruptly c) abrubtly d) aprubtly 43) Identify the correct meaning of the proverb “an idle brain is the devil’s workshop”. a) If you have nothing to do, you will likely think of mischief b) Keep a keen eye on enemies beyond what one might have on their friends. c) You should wake up and start work early if you want to succeed. d) people like to spend time with others who are similar to them. 44) And so, all the night- tide, I lie down by the side of my darling, My darling, my life and my bride.
