  • OTC Elite Athletes Shine on Diamond League Stage
OTC Elite Athletes Shine On Diamond League Stage By Curtis Anderson Oregon Track Club Elite’s Francine Niyonsaba and Nijel Amos continued to be among the shining stars on the Diamond League circuit in July. The two 800-meter runners closed out the month ranked second in the world in their re- spective events after posting stunning season-best marks just off their lifetime PRs. Niyonsaba placed second in Monaco on July 20 with a time of 1 minute, 55.96 seconds, adding to her overall lead in the Diamond League standings, 43 points in six races, with her fifth sub-1:58 performance of the outdoor season. Earlier in the month, the reigning 2016 Olympic silver medalist claimed Dia- mond League victories in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 5 and Rabat, Moroc- Thompson, @elevation0m Photo by Travis co, on July 13. Nijel Amos “That’s one tough lady,” OTC Elite coach Mark Rowland said of the back-to-back wins. “She ran in front and towed the rest of the athletes to a fast time. She showed her competitive nature down the home straight by refusing to relinquish the lead.” The native of Burundi set her personal best of 1:55.47 last year, and she clocked her season best of 1:55.86 in Paris on June 30. After the race in Monaco, Niyonsaba flew home to Burundi to meet with government officials to discuss help- ing underserved women and children in that country through the establishment of her proposed foundation. She also represents UNICEF in Burundi as a motivational speaker.

  • The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,338 Athletes As at 27 April 2014)
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1,338 athletes as at 27 April 2014) No country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-four-minute mile than the USA. Duing the 2014 indoor season in that country 48 athletes broke four minutes and the US total of sub- four-minute milers is now approaching the 450 mark. Elsewhere, even the distant past eventually yields its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later ! There are now 17 sets of brothers, including five sets of twins, and five sets of fathers and sons who have broken four minutes. The most recent contributor to this family tradition is John Coghlan, son of Eamonn Coghlan. No grandfathers and grandsons as yet ! Performances listed in this Register represent the first occasion on which the athlete ran sub-four- minutes for the mile, followed by the all-time personal best if there was a subsequent improvement. Almost 60 per cent of the 1,338 athletes listed have not bettered their first Sub-4 performance, though some of those from the more recent years will obviously do so eventually. Performances listed in tenths-of-a-second were recorded manually; it may be that some of these were also automatically recorded and the figures not made public, but as they mostly date back 30 years or more it is very unlikely that such data will ever come to light. The standard middle- distance event in international competition has for more than a century been the 1500 metres, and but for this there would certainly be twice as many sub-four-minute milers as there actually are.

  • The OTC and Tracktown Loses a Good Friend and Leader
Volume 96 | January 2019 Dow nload a PDF of this new sletter here! The OTC and TrackTown Loses a Good Friend and Leader Barbara Kousky, a driving force in the Oregon Track Club, passed away on December 17. Barbara was a tireless volunteer and leader in the OTC for decades. Her good friend and former business partner, Tom Jordan, shared this tribute: Dedicated, selfless, intense, warm, and loyal – with the passing of Barbara Kousky, the Oregon track and field community has lost one of its brightest lights. From her time as president of the OTC Masters, to several terms Barbara Kousky as USA Track & Field Masters Chair, to a 20-year partnership in Northwest Event Management, to extensive volunteer work in every aspect of track and field and in the community, Barbara gave her all to every endeavor. It was my great privilege to be Barbara's business partner in Northwest Event Management for 20 years, and her friend for far longer than that. She brought her high standard of excellence to all of the events we helped organize -- two USA Championships, three National Masters Championships, one World Veterans' Championships, 13 Butte to Butte events, the 2004 Junior Olympics, and the 2008 Olympic Trials, our last event together. Our first event was the World Veterans' Championships (now called the World Masters Championships) in 1989, still the largest participatory track and field event ever held at Hayward Field. Just under 5,000 athletes competed over two weeks, and for years after, Masters athletes around the world spoke of Eugene in '89 with fondness.

World Championships include 5 OTC Athletes By Curtis Anderson, OTC Elite Press Officer The Oregon Track Club Elite has a strong presence at the 2019 IAAF World Championships being held Sept. 27-Oct. 6 at Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Five OTC Elite athletes secured berths in the ten-day meet. Ben Blankenship (1,500m), Hanna Green (800m), and Hassan Mead (5,000m) are members of Team USA, while Scotland’s Neil Gourley (1,500m) competes for Great Britain and Nijel Amos (800m) represents Botswana. Under the guidance of coach Mark Rowland, it has already been a highly successful season for those athletes. This will be Mead’s third straight appearance at the World meet, Amos qualified for the second time, and Blankenship, Green, and Gourley will be making their World Championship debuts. “We’re all aware that this is the sharp end of the season, and we will be judged upon how well we race at the Championships,” Rowland said. “It’s an exciting period ... it’s my aim to enable the athletes at this stage to be fearless, but realistic in their approach so they will have a positive experience as they progress into the Olympic year.” Here’s a quick glance at the five OTC Elite athletes competing at Worlds (all times PDT). • Sub-4 Register 2021
The Sub-4 Alphabetic Register (1663 athletes as of April 13, 2021) WITHIN A YEAR of the death of the first sub-4:00 miler, Sir Roger Bannister, at the age of 88, the total number of athletes who have broken through the once historic barrier was already past 1550, and no country has kept greater faith with the legend of the sub-4 mile than the USA. Even during the COVID-ravaged year of ’21 there were 51 men who broke 4:00 indoors, of which 32 were Americans. Outdoors in ’20 there were 33 who enterprisingly did so in Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Switzerland and, of course, the USA. The total of US sub-4 milers is now 594, far ahead of Great Britain’s 215 and Kenya’s 152, with no other country yet nearing 100. The year ’21 has very soon passed another landmark, as Nick Willis, of New Zealand, has broken 4:00 for a record 19th successive year. The previous best of 18 was held by his countryman John Walker, but Steve Scott of the USA, is still the most prolific sub-4 miler in history, with 137 such times to his credit. Elsewhere, even the distant past has eventually yielded its secrets: a hitherto overlooked performance from as long ago as 1974 by a Bulgarian was not discovered until 36 years later! Bulgaria remains something of a mystery because another sub-four minute mile by a Bulgarian in ’92 (no venue or exact date) has only recently been caught up with! There are now 19 sets of brothers, including 5 sets of twins, and 11 sets of fathers and sons who have broken 4:00.
