  • Elaine Augustine
Summer 2014 Jeani Taylor, Editor ELAINE AUGUSTINE ABOUT THE JURYING PROCESS By Elaine Augustine, PSA Master Pastelist And a Juror for PSA’s 2014 Enduring Brilliance, National Arts Club, NYC. Twenty-five years ago when the last of my four children went off to college, I started painting again. Raised in an artistic family and painting as far back as I can remember, I had all the tools…just hadn’t had the time while raising my children and helping run the family business. And then I discovered pastels. I Pop Rocks got on a plane and flew to Denver for a workshop with Ramon Kelly, came home, and haven’t stopped painting since then. One of my Bucket List goals was to have a painting accepted in the PSA Annual “For Pastels Only” Exhibition. Got to mark that off my list on second try. And now, years later, I am a PSA Master Pastelist. This past November, I received a call from Pastel Society of America’s President, Jimmy Wright, asking if I would consider being part of a three member jury for this year’s 42nd PSA Annual Exhibition “Enduring Brilliance”. The other juror members were Duane Wakeham and Aline Ordman, also Master Pastelists. I was sooo honored. I was told that this would consume at least a week of my life. No problem…I had closed my 47-year-old family business last fall and was ready to be an active part of the pastel world… doing something besides standing at my easel. In preparation for my duties, I was able to go online to the demonstration option for SHOWSUBMIT to familiarize myself with the jurying process.

The enigmatic capital letter on a sentence yet unwritten. Perhaps ours began in 1976, when a charismatic entrepreneur purchased the CIPRIANI, Venice’s most glamorous hideaway. Perhaps it began when he decided to reinvent the world’s most romantic train that same year, so the hotel’s illustrious guests could arrive in style. Perhaps it began even earlier. Maybe when Michelangelo decorated the façade of a monastery in the Tuscan hills of Fiesole, or with a clandestine meeting between Rasputin and St Petersburg’s high society. Perhaps it began with HIRAM BINGHAM finding a route back to the lost city of the Incas. Perhaps in the beginning there was nothing, and a nameless voice said “let there be light.” Then they brought the canapés. Our beginning is wrapped in legend and secret; pioneering firsts and time- tested traditions. Perfumed secrets in ancient palaces and jewel-coloured fireworks on a golden beach. Champagne was definitely involved. Each of these fabled yesterdays weave into the adventure of today. Follow BELMOND to 46 unforgettable travel experiences peppered across the world’s most celebrated destinations.

  • Belmond Ltd. 2016 Annual Report President and Chief Executive
Belmond Ltd. 2016 Annual Report President and Chief Executive Officer’s Message April 21, 2017 Dear Fellow Shareholders, 2016 marked a crossroads in Belmond’s development, as we made some critical steps forward that not only led to a strong year, but also provided us with a solid basis for optimism about the Company’s future. Notable among those steps forward was the June 2016 unveiling of our new strategic growth plan, which was the culmination of a great deal of hard work, critical thinking and collaboration by the senior management team under the direction of our board of directors. This plan focuses our strategic objectives on three key areas and provides a framework for our aspirational financial goals, including our aim of doubling the size of the Company by 20201. This year we laid the foundation for Belmond’s execution of accelerated growth under the plan by commencing the implementation of enhanced business systems and various crucial growth initiatives, coupled with the recruitment of some new management talent to supplement, strengthen and deepen our executive team in preparation for the ambitious five-year course that we set for the Company. At the same time, we continued to maintain a disciplined focus on our operating results, delivering 8% constant currency growth in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (“Adjusted EBITDA”), bringing Adjusted EBITDA to $128.2 million for the full year 2016. We are encouraged by all that we have accomplished on our strategic growth plan thus far and are looking forward to 2017, which we anticipate will be a pivotal year of progress toward meeting our 2020 goals.
