?::;'CJ7 I UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII LIBRARY. THE AMIS HARVEST FESTIVAL IN CONTEMPORARY TAIWAN A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'IIN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC MAY 2003 BY Linda Chiang Ling-chuan Kim Thesis Committee: Frederick Lau, Chairperson Ricardo Trimillos Robert Cheng ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would never have been able to finish this thesis without help from many people and organizations. I would like to first thank my husband Dennis, and my children, Darrell, Lory, Lorinda, Mei-ling, Tzu-yu, and Darren, for their patience, understanding, and encouragement which allowed me to spend two entire summers away from home studying the culture and music of the Amis people of Taiwan. I especially want to thank Dennis, for his full support of my project. He was my driver and technical assistant during the summer of 1996 as I visited many Amis villages. He helped me tape and record interviews, songs, and dances, and he spent many hours at the computer, typing my thesis, transcribing my notes, and editing for me. I had help from friends, teachers, classmates, village chiefs and village elders, and relatives in my endeavors. In Taiwan, my uncles and aunts, T'ong T'ien Kui, Pan Shou Feng, Chung Fan Ling, Hsu Sheng Ming, Chien Su Hsiang, Lo Ch'iu Ling, Li Chung Nan, and Huang Mei Hsia, all helped with their encouragement and advice. They also provided me with rides, contacts, and information. Special thanks goes to T'ong T'ien Kui and Chung Fan Ling who drove me up and down mountains, across rivers and streams, and accompanied me to many of the villages I wanted to visit. -

WARNER BROS. / WEA RECORDS 1970 to 1982
AUSTRALIAN RECORD LABELS WARNER BROS. / WEA RECORDS 1970 to 1982 COMPILED BY MICHAEL DE LOOPER © BIG THREE PUBLICATIONS, APRIL 2019 WARNER BROS. / WEA RECORDS, 1970–1982 A BRIEF WARNER BROS. / WEA HISTORY WIKIPEDIA TELLS US THAT... WEA’S ROOTS DATE BACK TO THE FOUNDING OF WARNER BROS. RECORDS IN 1958 AS A DIVISION OF WARNER BROS. PICTURES. IN 1963, WARNER BROS. RECORDS PURCHASED FRANK SINATRA’S REPRISE RECORDS. AFTER WARNER BROS. WAS SOLD TO SEVEN ARTS PRODUCTIONS IN 1967 (FORMING WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS), IT PURCHASED ATLANTIC RECORDS AS WELL AS ITS SUBSIDIARY ATCO RECORDS. IN 1969, THE WARNER BROS.-SEVEN ARTS COMPANY WAS SOLD TO THE KINNEY NATIONAL COMPANY. KINNEY MUSIC INTERNATIONAL (LATER CHANGING ITS NAME TO WARNER COMMUNICATIONS) COMBINED THE OPERATIONS OF ALL OF ITS RECORD LABELS, AND KINNEY CEO STEVE ROSS LED THE GROUP THROUGH ITS MOST SUCCESSFUL PERIOD, UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1994. IN 1969, ELEKTRA RECORDS BOSS JAC HOLZMAN APPROACHED ATLANTIC'S JERRY WEXLER TO SET UP A JOINT DISTRIBUTION NETWORK FOR WARNER, ELEKTRA, AND ATLANTIC. ATLANTIC RECORDS ALSO AGREED TO ASSIST WARNER BROS. IN ESTABLISHING OVERSEAS DIVISIONS, BUT RIVALRY WAS STILL A FACTOR —WHEN WARNER EXECUTIVE PHIL ROSE ARRIVED IN AUSTRALIA TO BEGIN SETTING UP AN AUSTRALIAN SUBSIDIARY, HE DISCOVERED THAT ONLY ONE WEEK EARLIER ATLANTIC HAD SIGNED A NEW FOUR-YEAR DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH FESTIVAL RECORDS. IN MARCH 1972, KINNEY MUSIC INTERNATIONAL WAS RENAMED WEA MUSIC INTERNATIONAL. DURING THE 1970S, THE WARNER GROUP BUILT UP A COMMANDING POSITION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. IN 1970, IT BOUGHT ELEKTRA (FOUNDED BY HOLZMAN IN 1950) FOR $10 MILLION, ALONG WITH THE BUDGET CLASSICAL MUSIC LABEL NONESUCH RECORDS. -

British Travelers and Egyptian 'Dancing Girls:' Locating
British Travelers and Egyptian ‘Dancing Girls:’ Locating Imperialism, Gender, and Sexuality in the Politics of Representation, 1834-1870 by Robin Bunton B.A. (Hons.), University of British Columbia, 2015 Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Department of History Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences © Robin Bunton SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Summer 2017 Copyright in this work rests with the author. Approval Name: Robin Bunton Degree: Master of Arts (History) Title: British Travelers and Egyptian ‘Dancing Girls:’ Locating Imperialism, Gender, and Sexuality in the Politics of Representation, 1834-1870 Examining Committee: Chair: Mark Leier Professor Thomas Kuehn Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Paul Sedra Supervisor Associate Professor Evodoxios Doxiadis Supervisor Assistant Professor Azadeh Yamini-Hamedani External Examiner Associate Professor World Literature Program Simon Fraser University Date Defended/Approved: August 4th, 2017 ii Abstract This project examines representations of two categories of Egyptian female entertainers, the ‘awâlim and ghawâzî. By situating Egypt’s ‘dancing girls’ in relation to the socio- cultural context of nineteenth-century Britain, it seeks to determine how gendered dynamics of power were culturally constructed and negotiated around these women. Such an approach breaks from previous historiographical contributions to the topic of Egyptian female entertainers by considering the wider implications of imperial power, gender, and sexuality within the politics of their representation. Chapter Two analyzes the cultural significance of the 1834 banishment of the ‘awâlim and ghawâzî from Cairo, and proposes alternative historical perspectives. -

In the late 1990s, a British court ordered rock group the Verve to pay all of the royalties stemming from their 1997 hit "Bittersweet Symphony" to the owners of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time" for failing to clear the use of a Rolling Stones' sample in the song. See Ben Challis, The Song Remains the Same: Music Sampling in the DigitalAge, MONDAQ, Dec. 23, 2003, http://www.mondaq.com/article.asp?articleid=23823&latestnews.html. The Verve sampled a symphonic remake of the Stones' hit, which was released on the "Rolling Stones Songbook" album under the monniker, the Andrew Oldham Orchestra.
