Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody 1 s affairs in the Noakes family. I pray, Lord, make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all- -But thou knowest that I want a few friends among the Noakes relatives at the end. Lord, keep my mind free from the redtal of endless details ... Give me wings to get tb the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and love of rehearsing them is be coming sweeter as the years go by . • I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of other Noakes pains but help me to endure them with patience. I pray, Lord, not for improved memory, but for a growing humility and a lessening cocksure ness when my memory seems to clash with the memories of other Noakeses. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Lord, keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint"." -some of them are so hard to live with- -but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in ordinary people. Give me the grace to tell them so before it is too late. But here's another question With quite a different view If your Noakes ancestors could see Would they be proud of you? 11 Perhaps the next best thing for some Would be for you to see The branches and the twigs that's come From off our family tree. viii PREFACE The first time that I became aware of the Noakes Pioneers of Utah was in July 1933 and the place was Provo, Utah. Viola and I were reading an old issue of the Salt Lake Tribune or possibly it was the Deseret News when she exclaimed, "That's my grandmother"! Sure enough the obit uary notice listed Isabelle Winterton Coleman as the youngest daughter of the deceased Emma Ink pen Noakes Winterton, widow of John Winterton of Charleston. Grandmother Emma was born 4 Dec 1854 in Great Salt Lake City, her father George Noakes had brought his family to Utah from Ohio in 1852 and her grandfather Thomas Noakes had brought his family from England to the United States of America about 1828 and on to Utah during th~ fir st years of its settlement. Thomas Noakes had been associated with both Presidents Joseph Smith Jun. and Brigham Young in the early days of the Mormon Church. During the past thirty years we have visited with many of our Noakes relatives in various Utah and other western communities. We have heard the stories and anecdotes of our ancestors pioneer lives repeated. Several of our Noakes cousins have compiled extensive genealogical accounts of the family progenitors. It seemed appropriate that these family records should be published in book form as one means of preserving the Noak;es family memories and deeds of past generations. Since the Noakes Family have been Chris tians as far back as we have been able to trace them, it seemed propei- for me to proceed with the 6000 year old Bible chronology of our progen.,. itors. Evolutionists and pseudo-anthropologists who would make our ancestors into some sub human type of creature emerging from the mire of many million years ago are welcome to prepare ix their own account of our first earthly parents if they care to do so. Personal fancy and the vagaries of my mind are largely responsible for the selected items of chronology to appear and give a semblance of sequence to the family history during the past several centuries. The availability of material and space limitations were other controlling factors in the final draft. It has been rightly said that authorship, no matter what kind, is a fantastic indulgence of the human ego. I will use another portion of this book to acknowledge my debt to many other writers, librarians, historians and genealogists. It has been a pleasure during the past several years to compile and edit this record into manuscript form for printing. Special care has been exercised to obtain accurate dates and correct spelling of names. If pen or typewriter have created an impossible biological creature, please tell me in .order that I may make amends, if there are omissions, additions or other correc tions that you wish to make let me know within the year and an errata sheet will be sent for insertion in each published book.
