1 Day Itinerary #02 -- Half Day World War II Valletta World War II in Malta Day 1 Lascaris War Rooms Private Tour War Shelters at Casa Rocca Piccola National War Museum Itinerary Inclusions Itinerary Exclusions Value (NET Total in Euro) Based on Two Persons World War II in Malta The Siege of Malta in World War II was a military campaign that lasted from June 1940 to November 1942 for the fight for the control of the strategically important island. Malta had belonged to the British Crown Colony of Malta, which pitted the air forces and navies of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany against the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy. The Axis resolved to bomb or starve Malta into submission, by attacking its ports, towns, cities, and Allied shipping supplying the island. Malta was one of the most intensively bombed areas during the war with over 3000 bombing raids that dropped 6,700 tons of bombs on the Grand Harbour area alone. 1 Day 1 Lascaris War Rooms Private Tour The Lascaris War Rooms consist of an underground complex of tunnels and chambers that housed the War Headquarters from where the defence of Malta was conducted during the Second World War. This secret complex contained operations rooms for each of the fighting services from where not only the air defence of Malta was coordinated, but also some of the greatest battles fought in the Mediterranean during the war. War Shelters at Casa Rocca Piccola Go into a 16th Century Palace and through to the garden to discover private war shelters. The largest of their cut out from solid rock 3 bomb shelters could fit up to 100 people in it. 2 National War Museum The National War Museum houses a superb collection of items which takes us back to prehistoric times. Artifacts are displayed in chronological order, commencing from the early phases of the Bronze Age around 2,500 B.C. Two halls are dedicated to Malta’s important role in WW I, the Inter-War Period and Malta’s historical role in the Second World War. Displayed in these halls one can find perhaps the three most important icons of this museum: the Gloster Sea Gladiator N5520 FAITH, Roosevelt’s Jeep ‘Husky’ and Malta award for gallantry, the George Cross. Concluding the walk through Malta’s military role in history are displays dedicated to Malta’s Independence, becoming a Republic, Freedom Day and Malta joining the European Union. Data Management The National Inventory The Mission Statement of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage is to fulfill the duties of the State to ensure the protection and accessibility of cultural heritage as defined in the Cultural Heritage Act 2002. Article 7 of the Cultural Heritage Act requires the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage to compile a National Inventory of cultural property in the Maltese Islands. In 2011 the Superintendence published a first installment of the inventory records in the Government Gazette. Data inputting online of the Cultural Heritage Inventory Management System (CHIMS) also proceeded in parallel. In 2016 the Superintendence was not in a position to publish any new inventory records on the Government Gazette or on CHIMS due to a lack of resources and other more pressing commitments. VALLETTA, OUR CAPITAL CITY A CITY BUILT BY GENTLEMEN FOR GENTLEMEN The story of Malta's capital is inextricably linked with the island's mythology – after laying Valletta's foundation stone in 1566 the Knights of St John created an elegant baroque city from an arid, empty peninsula. But, don’t imagine that it’s just a relic of the past. Behind the foreboding fortifications you’ll find a living city that still has plenty of stories to tell, home to ground breaking contemporary architecture, delicious cuisine and a thriving nightlife scene. Valletta – built by the Knights of St John on a peninsula that's only 1km by 600m. Its founder decreed that it should be 'a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen', and it retains its 16th-century elegance. It may be small, but it's packed full of sights; when Unesco named Valletta a World Heritage Site, it described it as 'one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world'. The Renzo Piano–designed City Gate, Parliament Building and Opera House have changed the cityscape and galvanised it into life. These sights, along with Valletta's status as European Capital of Culture for 2018, have seen the city reborn, with new museums, restored golden-stone fortresses, and new hotels, bars and restaurants in converted 16th-century mansions. ANNUAL REPORT 2016 During the year under review Heritage Malta sustained the upbeat momentum and to some extent surpassed the noteworthy achievements of 2015. Besides the inauguration of three major infrastructural projects, two of which co-funded by the EU, and a major exhibition to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Valletta, Heritage Malta also managed to register a record in the number of visitors and in the generation of revenue for the fourth year in a row. The Agency’s output comprised also the biggest-ever number of cultural activities, and an impressive outreach programme including thematic sessions for school children and publications. Catering equipment was also bought to upgrade the kitchen operational capabilities. The office and library upgrades also continued, including a new board room and two sealed reserve collection areas. Further investment was also made in the functions spaces at Fort St Angelo in order to meet clients’ needs and expectations.

The goal of this process is twofold (i) To understand the changes brought about by the ECoC title, and (ii) To address any shortcomings and challenges faced by the Valletta 2018 Cultural Programme throughout its implementation. This process comprises a series of longitudinal studies commencing in January 2015, three full years before the European Capital of Culture year, and running through the ECoC, with results preented in 2019, thereby capturing data before, during, and in the immediate aftermath of Valletta holding the ECoC title. This process is divided into five themes: 1. Cultural & Territorial Vibrancy 2. Governance & Finance 3. Community Inclusion & Space 4. The Tourist Experience 5. The Valletta Brand This research is a collaborative, mixed-methods process, involving a number of public entities, collecting and analysing data primarily of a quantitative nature, together with independent researchers working with data that is predominantly qualitative. These entities and researchers constitute the Valletta 2018 Evaluation & Monitoring Steering Committee, that was set up to manage and implement this research process. The public entities forming part of the Steering Committee are: - National Statistics Office - Malta Tourism Authority - Employment & Training Corporation - Economic Policy Department within the Ministry of Finance The independent researchers participating within this process were selected according to their area of expertise.

Public Outreach 40 Page 2 of 40 Foreword In March 2018, the then Superintendent of Cultural Heritage Dr Anthony Pace moved into another post as the Co-ordinator of Malta’s World Heritage Tentative List. Joseph Magro Conti succeeded Dr Pace as Superintendent as from 28 March 2018 following a handover to ensure a smooth transition as well as embark on the restructuring of the organisation, services and processes to reflect the demands of the time. Priority was given to the creation of positive dialogue with and between several key players in the cultural heritage sector. This ensured a comprehensive understanding of the main issues being encountered by the Superintendence and the wider cultural heritage sector. Understanding issues: On taking office the Superintendent immediately carried out one-to-one meetings with various operators, namely: . SCH staff; . former Superintendent (Dr Anthony Pace) – several meetings . former Deputy Superintendent (Mr Nathaniel Cutajar); . cultural heritage stakeholders (Committee of Guarantee, Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee, Heritage Malta, University of Malta; Malta’s Ambassador for UNESCO); . Ministries, architects, Planning Authority, Environment Resources Authority, Restoration Directorate, Malta Developers Association, independent developers, and NGOs amongst others. Archaeological Service Providers registered with the SCH and a networking meeting together with SCH officers to highlight and discuss main findings from the one-to-one meetings and meetings with stakeholders.
