May 3-6, 2019 October 4-7, 2019 MAY 3-6, 2019 OCTOBER 4-7, 2019 PRESENTED BY: Equestrian Statue of Queen Elizabeth II in Windsor Great Park Cumberland Lodge 02 WINDSOR & THE GREAT PARK: A ROYAL HERITAGE WEEKEND WELCOME CUMBERLANDAn introduction to...LODGE Originally built by one of Oliver Cromwell’s officers after the English Civil War, Cumberland Lodge sits in a beautiful, secluded setting at the heart of Windsor Great Park. It was to become a Royal Residence and has also seen other notable residents such as John and Sarah Churchill, first Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, who were far fonder of it than they were of Blenheim Palace; and William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland who gave it its current name. From the mid-nineteenth century it was home to Princess Helena, third daughter of Queen Victoria, and her husband Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. In the twentieth century it was to play an important role in the constitutional crisis that led to the abdication of King Edward VIII. 03 WINDSOR & THE GREAT PARK: A ROYAL HERITAGE WEEKEND Tour Introduction TOUR INTRODUCTION One never forgets their first visit to Windsor. For myself, it came at the age of 17, as a young, yet passionate enthusiast of British history. I remember well that first train journey to Windsor and seeing the imposing castle rising above the landscape. That first visit and the many years that have followed, have opened my eyes to the great history as well as to the estate community, not just in the castle itself, but in glorious Windsor Great Park — filled with so many treasures. For many of us, the idea of a country house weekend brings to mind the delights of gathering with other unique individuals for lively conversation regarding shared interests, fine food, and memorable, curated activities. That is exactly what we have created here: a very special weekend going behind-the-scenes of Windsor Castle and Windsor Great Park. We will hear from the very people that make Windsor so special, enjoy unprecedented access to the estate and castle, hear from experts on Windsor and royal history past and present – all while staying in the beautiful surroundings of Cumberland Lodge, a private retreat and former royal residence, built in 1652. I do hope you will join us for this most-memorable country house weekend, the epitome of experience-based-travel. Robert Blackburn will deliver a keynote lecture on constitutional issues of monarchy, parliament and the Church of England. Norman Doe and Colin Podmore will assess the centenaries of, respectively, the Welsh Church Act 1914 and the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act 1919 (known as the ‘Enabling Act’), and the experience of English and Welsh Anglicanism over this period.

  • Cumberland Lodge Honouring Hena in the Right Setting
Cumberland Lodge Honouring Hena in the Right Setting ALASTAIR NIVEN UMBERLAND L ODGE WAS A PECULIARLY APT PLACE in which to hold a conference in celebration of the life of Hena Maes–Jelinek. One of the C things which Hena’s friends knew about her, but of which she herself almost never talked, was that, as a Jewish child, she had been hidden in the Second World War by nuns. Her memories of that time, when she so nearly met the fate of many of her relatives who were sent to concentration camps, were so vivid that it was only with the greatest reluctance that she crossed the border from Belgium to Germany, even though some of her closest friends and post- colonial colleagues were there. When she visited Cumberland Lodge, not long after I had become Principal, she responded with particular interest to my ac- count of the circumstances of the Lodge’s birth or, rather, its re-birth. The Lodge was built in 1652 by one of Oliver Cromwell’s soldiers. Cromwell, not having paid his army for several years, put King Charles I on trial at West- minster and oversaw his execution on 30 January 1649. His motive was partly to realize income on the King’s estates, which now passed into parliamentary hands. One piece of land in Windsor Great Park was sold for the sum of £4,000 to the man who built the Lodge, which thus began its history as a seat of repub- licanism. This did not long survive the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
