Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -
Lepidoptera of Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California

Langston Kensington, CA November 1999; edited 2009 The following list summarizes observations of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California, during 1995-1999. Data originate from about 75 daytime and crepuscular visits of 0.5 to 3.5 hrs, in all months of the year. All of the butterfly species and some of the moths were recorded by RLL, most of the moth species and their larval host plants by JAP. A total of 145 species is recorded (30 butterflies, 115 moths), a modest number considering the extent and diversity of the flora. However, many of the potential larval host plants may be present in too small patches to support populations of larger moths or butterflies. Nonetheless, we were surprised that colonies of some of the species survive in a small area that has been surrounded by urban development for many decades, including some rare ones in the East Bay region, as annotated below. Moreover, the inventory is incomplete. A more comprehensive census would be accomplished by trapping moths attracted to ultraviolet lights. In a habitat of this size, however, such survey would attract an unknown proportion of species from surrounding areas. Larval collections are indicated by date-based JAP lot numbers (e.g. 95C37 = 1995, March, 37th collection). Larval foods of most of the other species are documented in other populations. Host plants are recorded at Albany Hill for 75 species (65% of the moths, 52% of the total); the rest were observed as adults only. -

Besides the known synonyms Eurycreon Lederer and Tritaea Meyrick, Dosara Waeker is also considered as a new synonym for the genus. The present report is essentially an update in which the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010) is followed, rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). THE AREA The Lowden Springs Conservation Area is located on the northwest side of Lowden Lake, 17 km south of Stettler. It was officially dedicated 13 June 2003. It is jointly owned by the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA), Ducks Unlimited Canada (DU) and Nature Conservancy Canada. It comprises 121 acres of native grassland, 5 acres of aspen and 4 acres of alkaline wetlands. The coordinates in the center of the area are 52.09N and 112.425W and the elevation 2 there is 830 m. Historically, the land was part of the Randon Ranch and was grazed for pasture. Small upland portions were broken up many years ago and the native vegetation was destroyed, however, much of the area still has the original native vegetation as indicated by the presence of plants like Prairie Crocus (Pulsatilla ludoviciana ) and Three-flowered Avens (Geum triflorum ). The habitus and genitalia are illustrated for the twelve species of Pterophoridae known from the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador). The status of one species is discussed, as it may be the unknown female of Postplatyptilia minima spec. nov. Five species are described as new: Postplatyptilia huigraica, P. mini- ma, Platyptilia nigroapicalis, Oidaematophorus cristobalis and O. devriesi. Redescriptions and/or diag- noses are given for the other seven species. Lectotypes are designated for Pterophorus nephogenes Meyrick and Platyptilia brevipennis Zeller.
