Gullies were then re- mapped after a ~40-year reforestation period (~1957–1997) and sediment production from gullies was calculated from these data bases using a degradation rate based on DEMs of gullies at differing stages of development in each of two different geologic/tectonic terrains. At the end of the measurement period the total composite gully area for the Waipaoa, Waiapu and Uawa catchments was 5%, 33% and 39% greater than before reforestation, and for the study period, gullies in both terrains collectively contributed the equivalent of 43%, 49% and 54% of the average annual suspended sediment yield from just 0.8%, 2.4% and 1.7% of hill country areas in these respective river systems. A potentially significant reduction in sediment production and yield at catchment-scale could be achieved through a more targeted approach to reforesta- tion, particularly of gullies in the most highly erodible and unstable pastoral hill country areas of Waiapu catchment.

It appeared in that section of the 1970 report. Populus deltoides 'Virginiana', Necklace Poplar. Frimley Park, Hastings. Dbh 262 cm, height 44.3 m, with a clear trunk to 9 m, in 1974. Planted c.1874. This is the largest known deciduous tree in New Zealand and one of the largest poplars in the world. Growth appears to be declining as since 1969 diameter has increased by only 4 cm and there has been little if any·height growth. Wilson A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geology Victoria University of Wellington 2006 ABSTRACT The coastal geomorphology of the Raukumara Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand, is investigated with the aim of understanding the geodynamics of this segment of the Hikurangi subduction zone. There are few active faults on the Raukumara Peninsula and there have been no historical subduction earthquakes on this part of the margin. Geodetic and geologic evidence suggests the onshore forearc is extending and sliding trenchward. However, Holocene and Pleistocene terraces that have some of the highest uplift rates and elevation in New Zealand occur in this region. Sediment underplating has previously been suggested as a cause of coastal forearc uplift, yet the inferred gradualness of this process does not reconcile with the inferred episodic nature of uplift suggested by stepped Holocene marine terraces along the Raukumara Peninsula. This study focuses on resolving these apparent inconsistencies in the current knowledge of the Raukumara sector of the Hikurangi margin by using the mechanisms of coastal uplift to improve our general understanding of forearc deformation processes. The mid to late Holocene marine terrace chronology and distribution at the Pakarae River mouth locality on the central Raukumara Peninsula eastern coastline is revised. The coverbed sediments and morphology of the terrace surfaces and straths there are consistent with abandonment of each terrace during a coseismic coastal uplift event.
