2014 ISSUE IV: FALL - The Maplewood Leaflet

New Developer Sought for Post Office Project

The Township of Maplewood is seeking a new developer for the Post Office Redevelopment Project on Maplewood Avenue. Earlier this month, the previously designated developers, L&M Development Partners and Wilder Balter Partners, withdrew from the project.

On September 4th, the principal of Wilder Balter advised the Township that he would no longer be involved in the project. He cited as reasons his recovery from a serious medical condition and Kings Supermarket’s decision not to become the anchor tenant in the new building. The Township and L&M then discussed various options to keep the project moving forward. On September 18th, L&M informed the Township it was withdrawing from the project.

During the next two weeks, the Township will interview four developers who expressed interest in the project and have a record of successful redevelopment in Maplewood and nearby towns. The Township has informed these prospective developers that the project must be built in accordance with the redevelopment plan and building designs already approved by the Maplewood Village Alliance. The Township Committee may designate one of these developers for exclusive negotiations at its October 7th meeting.

The Township Committee extended the lease of the post office until February 2015. At that time the post office will move to its new location at 195 Maplewood Avenue.

Rahway River Flood Control Project

Maplewood is a member of the Mayors’ Council setup to address repeated, catastrophic flooding along the Rahway River. On September 10th, Deputy Mayor, Kathleen Leventhal represented Maplewood in meetings with our Congressional representatives and the US Army Corps of Engineers on Capitol Hill.

The Mayors’ Council made the trip to ask for support for completion of the Rahway River Basin Flood Risk Management Study. In addition, a petition signed by residents of the eleven towns along the Rahway was presented. As you probably know, the campaign to no longer consider the alternative of a dam in South Mountain Reservation was successful. Work to widen and better control the outlet channel in the East Orange Reservoir, along with work in Cranford, is at this time the expected answer to the flooding.

On September 16th, Senators Menendez and Booker wrote again to the Army Corps urging funding for the remaining environmental portion of the study. We thank our representatives and look forward to learning that the project is back on track.

To sign the petition, please go to: http://www.change.org/p/us-army-corps-of-engineers-us- house-of-representatives-we-urge-the-us-army-corps-of-engineers-and-us-house-of- representatives-to-fully-fund-the-rahway-river-flood-mitigation-study-and-plan-for-2015- implementation

Maplewood Police Department: "Stay Alert and Call the Police First" Campaign

Maplewood Police officers are committed to protecting and serving the Community. To assist officers to better serve the public, Chief Robert J. Cimino is asking residents to "Stay Alert and Call the Police First."

Over the past year Maplewood Police has investigated a variety of incidents where residents have been victimized or witnessed suspicious activity, but have waited to call, or failed to call the police for assistance. The result of waiting to call the police is always a delayed police response and limited opportunity for officers to investigate, or help quickly.

In a variety of instances the failure to call the police first has hindered investigations and on some occasions even enabled criminals to commit crimes or escape. Some of the many unfortunate examples of this include:

• A victim observes suspects breaking into his home, calls a relative before calling the police aiding the suspects' escape from the area. • A neighbor observes a group of unfamiliar youths on a neighbor's porch, ignores the suspicious situation and the neighbor's house was burglarized.

Conversely, an alert neighbor who observes a suspicious man cutting through her yard and entering into her neighbor's yard notifies the Maplewood Police immediately and within two minutes officers were on the scene. Officers investigate, discover evidence of a burglary and arrest the individual for attempting to burglarize the neighbor's home. That's what can happen when residents "Stay Alert and Call the Police First."

So, whether you are a victim of a crime, notice a violation or suspicious behavior, Call the Police First. • Please don't wait to speak with a relative first, don't call a friend first, and don't just talk about it with a neighbor. Call the Police First. • If you have been the victim of a crime or a suspicious encounter, Call the Police First. • If you see strangers walking on your own property or acting suspiciously on the property of neighbors, Call the Police First. • If you see someone ringing your doorbell or a neighbor's doorbell and then walking around the house when you don't answer or the neighbor is not home, Call the Police First. • If you wish to remain anonymous, just tell the Dispatcher that you don't want to leave your name or address, but Call the Police First. • If you don't want to have an officer come to your home directly, just tell the Dispatchers, but Call the Police First.

If you have questions or wish to take advantage of any of our Crime Prevention Programs, including Neighborhood Watch or a free Home Security Survey, please contact the Maplewood Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at 973-762-3400 extension 7685.

Remember: Keep your neighborhood safe, "Stay Alert and Call the Police First" Call 911 for emergencies and call 973-762-3400 for general information.

Fall and Winter are great seasons for enjoying Maplewood and all it has to offer.

In Maplewood Village, the Fall season kicked off with the annual Art Walk & Music Fest on Sunday September 28th. It was a great day with something for everyone in the family to enjoy. First, there was wonderful fine art to check out. A juried show that celebrates mostly local artists, there were almost 50 artists present, displaying their work at the Art Walk. There were also live bands playing at Ricalton Square, merchants serving delicious food outside, and to top it off, great art activities for the kids. The weather was beautiful, the streets were packed with happy families and we were once again reminded that we live in one of the best towns in the state!

Looking ahead, there is the holiday season to look forward to in the Village. The perennial favorite Dickens Village kicks off the first weekend in December and runs every Saturday in December. As always, there will be carolers, a tree lighting, petting zoo, and more.

There will also be the annual breakfast with Santa in two locations, and he’ll also visit Dickens Village.

For more information on our holiday events, visit: http://maplewoodvillagenj.com/

There’s also wonderful things happening on Springfield Avenue! Don’t miss this year’s HarvestFest. It will be held on Sunday October 12th, rain or shine! This great event takes place on the grounds of the gazebo, next to the library. It’s a celebration of Fall and family. Think bounce house, pumpkin painting, pony rides, vendors with great things for sale, and live music! It’s truly a wonderful day! Go check it out.

For more information, visit: http://springfieldavenue.com/

Finally, we can’t forget Small Business Saturday. From Maplewood Village to Springfield Avenue, many merchants participate in this annual event that supports local shopping. Check out both websites for more information, but forget the malls and get out the Saturday following Thanksgiving to work off the Turkey and shop locally for your holiday gifts.

October 26 Let’s Go to the Pictures! 1776 (the movie), Popcorn & Theater History

For over 100 years, movies have played a part in the lives of Americans, entertaining, moving and inspiring us. The Maplewood Theater, built in 1927, has existed for much of this time – first as a large combined vaudeville-movie house, then a famed theatrical stage, and finally neighborhood movie house, now a multi-plex. Stop by Durand-Hedden to view this historical transformation in the exhibit: The Maplewood Theater: Its Forgotten Saga . Also view short silent comedies that tickled the fancy of Maplewoodians in the 1920’s or settle in to watch the rousing award winning film of the musical 1776, which retells the struggle of our founding fathers to declare independence from Britain. Free popcorn will be available for movie goers at the Country store “concession stand,” which will also be selling classic candy, original Maplewood Theater movie posters, and more!
