  • Shropshire's Churchyard Yews
’CHURCHYARD YEWS painted by Rev. Edward Williams M.A. more than two hundred years ago photographs by Tim Hills between 1997 and 2012 Between 1786 and 1791 Rev. Edward Williams made a record of most of ’parish churches. He was described in The Gentlem’ magazine vol 153 as “ excellent ” who had also “much of ” We are told in The annals and magazine of natural history, zoology and botany - vol 1 p183 that his studies included “ catalogue of all the plants which he had detected during many years' careful herborization of the county of ”for which “accuracy is well known, and perfect reli- ance can be placed on any plant which he ” Williams work thus gives us a rare opportunity to see some of Shropshir’churchyard yew trees as they appeared two hundred and twenty years ago. The examples below give us reason to be confident in the accuracy of his recording. The yew at Boningale (left) now has a girth of about 13ft, while that at Bucknell (centre) now has a girth of about 19ft, and the Norbury giant (right) has a girth above 33ft. His attention to detail is illustrated in this example at Tasley. In the painting we can clearly see that sections of the bole are leaning outwards, a process which has led to the distinctive yew we see today. On the following pages, 28 of the yews in ’paintings are seen as they appeared two hundred and twenty years ago and at they are now. We are grateful to Shropshire Archives for granting us permission to use their material in this way.

An Archaeological Analysis of Anglo-Saxon Shropshire A.D. 600 – 1066: With a catalogue of artefacts By Esme Nadine Hookway A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of MRes Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham March 2015 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract The Anglo-Saxon period spanned over 600 years, beginning in the fifth century with migrations into the Roman province of Britannia by peoples’ from the Continent, witnessing the arrival of Scandinavian raiders and settlers from the ninth century and ending with the Norman Conquest of a unified England in 1066. This was a period of immense cultural, political, economic and religious change. The archaeological evidence for this period is however sparse in comparison with the preceding Roman period and the following medieval period. This is particularly apparent in regions of western England, and our understanding of Shropshire, a county with a notable lack of Anglo-Saxon archaeological or historical evidence, remains obscure. This research aims to enhance our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period in Shropshire by combining multiple sources of evidence, including the growing body of artefacts recorded by the Portable Antiquity Scheme, to produce an over-view of Shropshire during the Anglo-Saxon period.

Wroxeter and Uppington Parish Council Minutes of Parish Council Meeting held in the Wroxeter Vineyard visitor centre, Wroxeter on the 15th January 2018 at 7.30pm. Present: Cllrs: Mr B Nelson (Chairman); Mrs V Amos; Mrs J Davies; Mr P Davies; Mr M Millington; Mrs S Rowlands and Mr I Sherwood 7 members of the public – for public consultation only In Sarah Morris – Clerk attendance: Cllr Claire Wild – Shropshire County Council PUBLIC CONSULTATION – UPPINGTON PLAY AREA Prior to the business of the Parish Council meeting, a public consultation was held to discuss the future options for the maintenance of the Uppington Play Area. The Chairman explained that there were increasing pressures on the Parish Council budget and, with the removal of the Environmental Maintenance Grant which had until this point funded grass cutting for the play area, to continue maintaining the play area would require a significant percentage increase to the Parish Council precept. The members of the public present explained that the play area was used by residents and relatives of residents and provided a heart of the community. It was a valuable resource for children to learn social and physical skills, and had potential to be further developed to encourage other members of the community to be active. Residents expressed concern that if the play area closed, it would be very unlikely to be reinstated in the future, when there may be more young families in the village to use it. Residents queried the Parish Council’s decision to repair the swing seats and then to close the swings, but noted that this was due to the timing of the ROSPA inspection, and that the Parish Council had committed to carrying out the required repairs.

We are thrilled with the response to our relaunch edition and sure you’ll find plenty in this edition of local interest. We’re still developing some ideas so you may see a few changes as the editions progress. Thank you to those of you who have submitted contributions for inclusion. If you have a story of interest to people in our locality then please think about submitting an article for one of our future editions. The Editorial Team is pleased to launch a Spring into Summer photograph competition, and is asking you submit a photograph representing Springtime or Summertime in Shropshire. You can submit entries up to 11th May and the winner, who will receive a £50 prize, will be announced in the June/July edition of the magazine. The Editorial Team will also select runner-up photographs. You can submit your photograph via email or at our Facebook page (see below). Full rules are given on pages 70/71.
