CURLEY (Massachusetts House of Representatives; U.S. House of Repre- sentatives; four term Mayor of Boston, Gover-nor of Massachusetts). Boston (Roxbury), 1874-1958. A fascinating politician, Curley was elected to Boston’s Board of Aldermen in 1904 while in prison on a fraud conviction. His father had been a petty criminal who died when James was ten. His mother then worked scrubbing floors. Curley “rose rapidly” through “corrupt machine politics” as a result of “his easy affability combined with his connections in the underworld”. This allowed him to quickly “use graft and corruption in the city services to solve constituent problems”. He served four terms as Mayor of Boston between 1914 and 1950. During his last term he was convicted of mail fraud and served five months in prison but was granted full pardons by President Harry Truman for both his 1904 and 1947 convictions. 4712. 10” Blk. & Gold acous. ENGELBERT DOLLFUSS [Austrian Chancellor, 1932-34/Speaker]. 1892-1934. Views of Dollfuss from a historical perspective are, at best, mixed. He came from modest circumstances (an illegitimate child raised on a farm) and was a brave officer in World War I. His distinguishing physical feature was his height: he was only 4' 11''. Dollfuss was, from most reports, an amiable, likable, well-intentioned man. When he was selected to be Chancellor in May, 1932 -- a very difficult time in Austria when the economy was in near free-fall -- he was the youngest head of government on the continent. At the time, his party had a one-vote majority in Parliament. He immediately came into conflict with German Nazi interests because of plans to maintain Austrian independence. He proclaimed a dictatorship (March 7, 1933) and, soon after, dissolved the Federal Assembly and abolished freedom of speech, press and assemblage and the use of Nazi distinctive uniform. He was shot and killed on July 25, 1934 by Austrian Nazi rebels who then seized power. – Wikipedia. 4616. 10” Red and Silver D.Pl [SDWHA-13-2/SDWHA-15-1]. A vaudeville artist of Italian-American ancestry, Gardella most frequently performed in blackface as Aunt Jemima.

Both were tragic figures, whose struggles with love, abuse, and abandonment culminated in untimely ends that nevertheless did not overshadow their historical relevance. Drawing on literature in cultural studies and sociology that deals with feminism, race, and class, I compare the the two women’s formative environments and their subsequent biographi- cal histories, their career trajectories, the societal hierarchies from which they emerged, and, finally, their significance for developments in women’s autonomy in wider society. Chanson réaliste (realist song) was a French popular song category developed in the Parisian cabaret of the1880s and which attained its peak of wide dissemination and popularity from the 1920s through the 1940s.

  • Integration and the American Musical: from Musical Theatre to Performance Studies
Integration and the American Musical: From Musical Theatre to Performance Studies By James Bradley Rogers A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Rhetoric in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair Professor Linda Williams Professor Shannon Steen Fall 2010 COPYRIGHT 2010 JAMES BRADLEY ROGERS Abstract Integration and the American Musical: From Musical Theatre to Performance Studies by James Bradley Rogers Doctor of Philosophy in Rhetoric University of California, Berkeley Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair In this dissertation, I challenge the discourse of “integration” that has long served as the foundation of musical theatre historiography. Integration ostensibly refers to an artful melding of the various components of the musical, such that the dances, songs, and dialogue appear fluid and continuous, of a whole. Most histories of the musical claim that the Kern-Hammerstein musical Show Boat was the first piece to adumbrate integration, and that the 1943 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! fully realized this promise of integration. I argue that this commonly held view ignores the fundamental impossibility of the musical to speak from a single voice, given the shift between the dialogic and musical registers. My dissertation illuminates how certain components or conventions of performance—divas, dancers, and the relationship of musicals to film and opera—have helped to consolidate this fictive sense of integration. This analysis also shows how the dominant narrative of musical theatre historiography—and our subsequent understandings of musical theatre—have been intimately suffused with the politics of gender, race, class, and nation.

The Shubert was built as a memorial to Sam S. Shubert, leader of the family's theatrical enterprises until his untimely death in a train wreck.
