The concept of traditional costume This research work deals with the origin of the Dirndl, the „Tracht“ from the Alpine region. Tracht means "that which is worn" or "the way it is worn“ and can be translated in English with traditional costume or folks costume. But before the dirndl can be examined more closely, the concept of traditional costume must be defined more precisely. The term traditional costume is often used to designate a very precise idea of a type of clothing. But a specific use of the term is problematic, because the clothing referred to as costume was not only worn in the Bavarian Oberland on certain occasions, but in some cases a traditional dress code was also used in everyday life. Until the middle of the 18th century, the term "Tracht" was understood to mean the totality of what a person wore outwardly, not only clothing, but also hairstyles and even the general appearance of a person.

  • Traditional Clothes from Austria Are Called “Trachten” and They Are Defined As Traditional Clothes from Different Regions Or Federal Countries
Austria and its “Trachten” Traditional clothes from Austria are called “Trachten” and they are defined as traditional clothes from different regions or federal countries. In general, there are two different types of clothes men can wear. On the one hand men can wear the “Steireranzug”, which consists of grey cotton trousers and a grey cotton jacket. These two pieces of clothing have little green details mostly made of wool and the buttons are staghorn buttons. On the other hand men can wear different kinds of “Lederhosen”. “Lederhosen” are trousers made of full-grain leather, which can have different colors – mostly between light brown and black. The color depends on which leather is used. There are short “Lederhosen”, which end just over the knees, some which are knee-long and long ones, which reach the ankles. Men combine “Lederhosen” either with a shirt, mostly checked and in different colors or with a shirt and a waistcoat on top of it. A Lederhosen can also be worn by women. Women normally wear “Dirndln”. A “Dirndl” is a dress and it consists of the dress itself, an apron on top of the dress and a blouse underneath the dress. “Dirndln” can be worn either in a short version or long version. For nearly every region in Austria there is a typical “Dirndl”. For example, there is the “Vulkanlanddirndl” – in English “volcano landscape Dirndl”. It is a typically East Styrian one. It got its name from the fact that in the east of Styria there were some active volcanos thousands of years ago. Another example is the typical Dirndl from our region.

  • FOLK CULTURE INSPIRATION in CZECH FASHION of the 20Th CENTURY* Alena KŘÍŽOVÁ*
FOLK CULTURE INSPIRATION IN CZECH FASHION OF THE 20th CENTURY* Alena KŘÍŽOVÁ* ABSTRACT Interest in folk culture and costumes emerged in central Europe in the romanticism period, clothes of country people became a hallmark of patriotism and iden- tification with one’s country folk. In the 20th century, during the First and Second World War folk culture and its forms such as ornament and embroidery became manifestations of the specific nature of Czech and Slovak nations, as well as a shield against foreign interference and a declaration of patriotism in the time of danger. The communist coup in 1948 brought about the closing of the state borders and the separation of the country from the western world. Folk Art Production Centre continued the tradition where it was still alive and restored it where it had been interrupted, involved domestic materials and manual techniques and preserved spe- cific regional manufacture. Young artists and students create a distinct stylization that employed materials, techniques and decoration from the folk environment, and assemble them into a whole that complied with the modern lifestyle.

Siddhartha Basu Preface Know for Sure—a series of eight general knowledge books for students of classes 1 to 8—has been a carefully and has earned the trust of many for providing detailed and accurate information on a wide range of subjects. between knowing more and being sure of what we learn is by getting to the primary source of facts or by cross- checking these with sound references. Know for Sure has been doing this since its beginning while continuously updating itself to keep pace with this age of information boom. This year, the series has been thoroughly revised Know for Sure is not just a bunch of questions and answers or just another bundle of facts which have to be answers. It is about going beyond a few select subjects that are taught in schools. It is also about becoming more aware of the world around us. Therefore, this series has been designed as an extension of the recommendations of National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 and is aimed at bringing alive general knowledge in the classroom with quizzes, games, facts, surveys, word craft, activities, life skills, brain-teasers, lifestyles, stories, handicrafts, group discussions about value systems, and a whole lot more that can excite, engage, and educate a young mind. The perspective of the series—India and the World—is aimed at kindling an all-round interest in subjects both familiar and unknown. While systematically dealing with subjects and areas recommended for learning, these books not only make quizzing fun and fascinating but also encourage learners to discover more.
