They had kings to lead them and the Israelites wanted one too. Despite Samuel’s warnings of what life under a king would be like, the Israelites were determined. And so they ended up with King Saul, ‘an impressive young man without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the others.’ It was not the first time that they had looked for the tangible. When Moses went up the mountain to receive the tablets of the commandments, the Israelites persuaded Aaron to build a gold calf for them to worship. As they felt more comfortable in the Promised Land, the Israelites turned their worship to Asherah poles Of course, people today still look to ‘things’, the tangible in their lives – cars, home, big screen TV, ‘celebrities’. All of which perish and fade over time or need to be updated to the latest model. Sometimes as Christians we focus on ‘things’, on the tangible; the liturgy, music, how to behave in church. Paul writes: we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. As Christians we fix our eyes on God; the Father who so loves the world; Jesus, God incarnate, the Word become flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood; Holy Spirit who gives us life, whose fruit is born out in our lives. Peter, in his wonderful introduction to his first letter, writes: Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy … 1 Peter 1:8 The heart of the Christian message is Jesus’ invitation to‘ believe in Me and the One who sent Me’. We all have a choice – to accept His invitation and believe in Him, or reject it. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
