Santiago, Chile email: [email protected] RESUMEN Durante la campaña científica realizada en 1994 por B/I alemán Victor Hensen en el Estrecho de Maga- llanes, Canales al Sur del Estrecho y alrededores del Beagle, en 24 estaciones a profundidades entre 15 y 664 m de profundidad se obtuvieron Moluscos Prosobranquios. Se registraron 12 familias, 23 géneros y 38 especies. De estas cinco son nuevos registros geográficos para el área (Margarella jason, Margarella tropidophoroides, Clilanidota densesculpta, Falsilunatia soluta y Xymenopsis muriciformis). Estos nue- vos hallazgos ratifican los procesos de intercambio de especies desde la Antàrtica hacia las áreas de más al norte. También fue posible observar el fenómeno contrario desde el norte al sur del continente como es el caso de Capulus ungaricoides. Palabras claves: Moluscos bentónicos. Archipiélago austral de Chile. ABSTRACT Twelve families, 23 genera and 38 species of prosobranchs molluscs obtained in 24 stations between 15 to 664 m, during the scientific campaign in 1994 by the german B/I Victor Hensen in the Straits of Magellan, channels to the south o f the Strait and around the Beagle Canal are informed. Of these, five are new geo- graphic registrations for the area (Margarella jason, Margarella tropidophoroides, Chlanidola denses- culpta, Falsilunatia soluta and Xymenopsis muriciformis). These new findings confirm the species ex- change process between Antarctica and areas towards the north. It was also possible to observe the oppo- site phenomenon from the north to the south o f the continent as is the case of Capulus ungaricoides. -

To achieve a better understanding of predation pattern recorded in the fossil record it is essential to study predator−prey in− teractions in the modern seas. It includes the data collected from the field observations as well as from the experiments in captivity. Such an approach allows recognition of the bioeroders, its description and also provides quantification of these interactions. This work offers a case study of the traces of predation resulting from the predator−prey interactions between three mussels: Mytilus chilensis, Brachidontes purpuratus, and Aulacomya atra; and their five natural enemies: the gas− tropods Trophon geversianus, Xymenopsis muriciformis, and Acanthina monodon, and the asteroids Cosmasterias lurida and Anasterias antarctica living along the intertidal and/or subtidal rocky shores in Tierra del Fuego. The predatory dam− age to mussel shells varies according to the predator and prey species and techniques for attacking prey are highly special− ized. A. monodon drills a hole in B. purpuratus but uses the outer lip of its shell as a wedge to open the valves of M. chilensis and A. atra. T. geversianus always makes holes, but while it drills the valve walls of M. chilensis, it prefers to drill the valve edges of A. atra and B. purpuratus, with different characteristic patterns. -

This considerable increase in diversity occurs specifically at the beginning of the Magellanic Biogeographic Province. Within this province lies the Strait of Magellan, considered the most important channel because it connects the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. These characteristics make it an interesting area for marine research; thus, the Strait of Magellan has histori- cally been the area with the greatest research effort within the province. -

Within the ongoing study of the muricid phylogeny, we have analysed molecular and morphological data from species traditionally ascribed to the muricid subfamily Trophoninae. Particularly, the availability of specimens collected in the Southern Ocean and surrounding basins allowed to demonstrate as the genera Pagodula, Xymenopsis, Xymene and Trophonella, which are traditionally classified in the Trophoninae, actually belong to a distinct lineage, for which the new subfamily Pago- dulinae is herein introduced. We propose and discuss a possible framework for the origin and radiation of Antarctic muricids. Hoy el desafío es ampliar ese liderazgo para cubrir de manera representativa otros ecosistemas de Chile. La Región de Magallanes presenta una oportunidad única para crear el parque marino más grande e importante del Cono Sur en la zona de Cabo de Hornos y las islas Diego Ramírez. Los archipiélagos más australes del continente americano albergan un ecosistema marino- terrestre único e intacto. Su valor ecológico es irremplazable: ◾◾ Un ecosistema marino prístino de alta productividad. ◾◾ Los fondos costeros albergan extensos bosques de kelp, auténticas catedrales submarinas donde habitan innumerables especies como la centolla. ◾◾ El abundante krill, base de la cadena alimentaria, sostiene a pingüinos, sardinas y ballenas. ◾◾ Abundantes colonias de lobos marinos, elefantes marinos, y cientos de miles de aves marinas – incluyendo a especies amenazadas. ◾◾ Es la puerta natural de Chile a la Antártida. Este estudio analiza los registros de 1.601 especies de macroinvertebrados bentónicos pertenecientes a: Demospongiae, Anthozoa, Polychaeta, Mollusca, Crustacea, Echinodermata y Ascideacea, agrupados en 10 zonas y tratados desde una perspectiva zoogeográfica. Mollusca (611 especies), Polychaeta (403) y Crustacea (370) corresponden a los grupos mejor representados a lo largo de la costa chilena, determinantes en el patrón global de la biodiversidad. Este aumenta suavemente de norte a sur, interrumpido por máximos que sugieren esfuerzos diferenciales de estudio más que un comportamiento natural de la biodiversidad. El grado de agrupamiento entre las zonas muestra las tres unidades biogeográficas definidas recientemente por Lancellotti & V ásquez. Este arreglo, que representa lo exhibido por los grupos más diversos, se ve alterado en los grupos menos representados donde las diferencias obedecen al patrón de afinidades mostradas por las zonas comprendidas dentro de la Región Templada Transicional. El quiebre zoogeográfico alrededor de los 41° S, sugerido largamente en la literatura, sólo ocurre en Echinodermata y Demospongiae, evidenciando en los otros taxa la existencia de un área de transición entre los 35° y 48° S, caracterizada por un reemplazo gradual de especies. -

During the summer season of 2013, samples were sub-Antarctic; diversity 2 obtained by scuba diving using a 0.25 m quadrat, arranged randomly within the bed. We ABBREVIATIONS extracted a total of 15 quadrats per sampling site. For Antarctic Peninsula beds the most MBP: Magellanic abundant species were the bivalve Lissarca miliaris (233 individuals) and the gastropod biogeographical province; Laevilacunaria antarctica (94 individuals), while for Strait of Magellan beds the most abundant NMDS: non-metric species was the polyplacophoran Callochiton puniceus (36 individuals). Comparative analysis multidimensional scaling between the two molluscan assemblages showed significant differences in the faunal com- ordination position between the Antarctic Peninsula and Strait of Magellan (f = 64.474; p = 0.0001). -

SUMMARY: Palaeontological studies on postglacial molluscan faunas from marine deposits located along the northern coast of the Beagle Channel (lat. 54°55’S, long. 68°34’-67°11’W) showed differences of various molluscan assemblages during a period of climatic stability after deglaciation. Oceanographic changes, different local environmental conditions and/or episodes of minor climatic fluctuations are pointed out as causes for the variations in faunal composition. Compari- son with Quaternary molluscs from Antarctica showed that these palaeofaunas overlap slightly at the species level, but have a considerable number of genera (23%) and families (50%) in common. These affinities and relationships are better explained on the basis of more recent migrating taxa than by ancient connections when the two regions formed part of the Weddellian Province. SUMMARY: The Molluscan species collected during the “Victor Hensen” Joint Magellan Campaign 1994 served as the basis for this species list. The list was then completed by literature data on the distribution of molluscs around the Falkland Islands, the other Scotia Arc Islands, Antarctica and the Kerguelen Islands. 397 Magellan species are known: 10 species of Aplacophora, 250 species of Gastropoda, 6 species of Scaphopoda and 131 species of Bivalvia. LISTA DE ESPECIES Y SU DISTRIBUCIÓN. – La base para esta lista está formada por las especies de moluscos recolectados durante la campaña internacional multidisciplinaria magallánica “Victor Hensen” en el año 1994. La lista se completó con datos de la literatura y estos se compararon con los datos existentes sobre la distribución en las Islas Malvinas, las Islas del Arco de Escocia, Antártida y las Islas Kerguelen. La lista de moluscos de Magallanes se compone de 397 especies: 10 especies de aplacóforos, 250 especies de gasterópodos, 6 especies de escafó- podos y 131 especies de bivalvos. Polyplacóforos y cefalópodos no están incorporados en esta lista porque ambos taxones necesitan revisión. Palabras clave: Moluscos, región de Magallanes, lista de especies, biogeografía.
