    PAPER'S AND PROCEEDINGS 173 OBITUARY. T. D. ATKINSON, F.R.I.B.A. HOMAS DINHAM. ATKINSON died on the 29th of December 1948, aged 84. Architect, antiquary and author, This greatness lay even more in the power of his personality than in the quiet competence of his work in many fields. Although widely learned in several departments of archaeology, he possessed true humility and a whimsical wit, often turned against his own foibles. His classical outlook belonged more to the 18th than the. 19th century, but he was inspired by deep feeling uncommon in the Age of Taste. Injustice moved him to fierce indignation and he could be stern with folly, but he met life with kindness, generosity and nobility of spirit. Aided by an exceptional memory, he methodically amassed architectural facts under subject headings during a period of well over' half-a-century ; these extensive- collections now belong to the Society of Antiquaries; Local Style in English Architecture, published' in the last year of his life, summarised part of this garnered treasure as an introduction to the more detailed treatment he had projected, and for which " The Sources of Hampshire Architecture in Past Times " {Proceedings, Hants Field Club, XV, pt. 2) and " Local Character in the Ancient Architecture' • of Cambridgeshire" {Proceedings, Cambridge Antiquarian Society, XL) were drafts. Among his many, other published works, the great Architectural History of the Benedictine Monastery, at Ely (1933) takes pride of place, but Hampshire should treasure his Survey of the Street Architecture of Winchester (1934), an outstanding record and work of catholic appreciation which ought perpetually to be had in remembrance—and in.print.

That the following amounts be now calculated by the Council for the year 2021/22 in accordance with Sections 31 to 36 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992 and subsequent regulations: (a) £142,474,348.00 being the aggregate of the amounts which the Council estimates for the items set out in Section 31A(2) of the Act taking into account all precepts issued to it by Parish Councils. (b) £132,169,900.00 being the aggregate of the amounts which the Council estimates for the items set out in Section 31A(3) of the Act. (c) £10,304,448.00 being the amount by which the aggregate at 3(a) above exceeds the aggregate at 3(b) above, calculated by the Council in accordance with Section 31A(4) of the Act as its council tax requirement for the year.     Register of Landowner Deposits under Highways Act 1980 and Commons Act 2006 The first part of this register contains entries for all CA16 combined deposits received since 1st October 2013, and these all have scanned copies of the deposits attached. The second part of the register lists entries for deposits made before 1st October 2013, all made under section 31(6) of the Highways Act 1980.     171 PREHISTORIC RACES AND THEIR .REMAINS IN THE OLD CLERE i COUNTRY OF HAMPSHIRE. BY T. W. SHORE, F.G.S. ' The country in the north of Hampshire which is known now as the Clere district, comprises the three parishes of Kings- clere, Burghclere, and Highclere. Two circumstances however show that the district known by this name Clere, was formerly more extensive. The name denotes a clearing or an open space, and the natural features of the chalk downs extending from the comparatively low ground near Basingstoke, to the high ground at Combe Hill or Inkpen Beacon, show that there must naturally always have existed over this area open or clear spaces, where the chalk lies close to the surface, and no trees can grow. The area of the Tertiary clays and loams which exist north of the chalk area, and like it extend from the south- east towards the north-west, was that which was formerly covered by the great forest of North Hampshire. North of Basingstoke, this was known as Pamber forest, near Kings- clere as the forest of Wytingley or Freemantle, and further westward another woodland area was known as the forest of Chute. Clearings were made here and there in this forest area in-the early Saxon period, and probably in the time of the Romans. Existing place names also point to the former larger extent of what was known as the Clere area, or forest clearings. Near Basingstoke is a small place now called Cliddesden, but which was named Cleresden at the time of the Norman Survey.

The following. are of interest:— III (1) Galinsoga parviflora. (Cohen.) This plant appeared some years ago at Kew, and gradually spread around London. How it arrived at Christchurch it is impossible to- say; it is a native of Peru. I. Hieracium Lachenalii. Bournemouth (Boyd Watt). This has only once previously been recorded, from Silchester in 1927. II. - Inula Crithmoides. Milford. (Cohen.) Ill (1). Coronopus didymus. Sway. (Cohen.) • VII (1). Senecio viscosus. Shawford. (FitzGerald.) Botanical Expedition to Greywell and Neighbourhood. On Monday, July 2nd, 1945. The party met at Basingstoke station at 11.0 a.m. About twenty-five members.came, some of them with cars, which enabled the whole party to motor to the localities visited. The first stop was at Tunworth, where the beech woods behind Tunworth Church (comprising part of Herriard Park) were visited. These are typical beech woods on chalk, containing a rich and characteristic flora. The Rev. W. G. Cruttwell was the leader. The following species were observed :— White Helleborine -' - Cephalanthera grandiflora. Narrow-leaved Helleborine - Cephalanthera ensifolia. Pyramidal Orchis - - Orchis pyramidalis. Spotted Orchis - - Orchis fuchsii. Fly Orchis - Ophrys muscifera. Butterfly Orchis - - Platanihera chlorantha. Bird's-nest Orchis - - Neottia nidus-avis. t Twayblade ... Listera ovata. Yellow Bird's-nest - - Monotropa hypopitys. Solomon's Seal - - Polygonatum multiflorum. Nettle-leaved Bellflower - Campanula trachelium. Hairy St. John's-wort - - Hypericum hirsulwn. Wood Spurge - - - Euphorbia amygdaloides. Wall Lettuce - Lactuca muralis. Wood Melick - - Melica uniflora. Cow-wheat - • - Melampyrum pratense.
