You Can Now Own a Piece of Bruce Labruce's “Faggotry” You Can Now Own a Piece Of Bruce LaBruce’s “Faggotry” By: Mikelle Street 10 JAN 2018 When Bruce LaBruce was given a film retrospective at the Museum of ModernArt in 2015, it was a bit of a statement. An artist with a history in both fashion and pornography, LaBruce employs both as influences in an oeuvre of transgressive work that spans over a quarter century. The acknowledgement of his place in queer film canon was important. And now, through a new collaboration with the Tom of Finland Store, fans of LaBruce’s work in both film and photography, will be able to have their very own piece of him. This week, the Tom of Finland Store launched an online exhibition of FAGGOTRY. The exhibit is a digital version of a project containing 100 images from LaBruce’s work, previously displayed in Los Angeles and Madrid. Now, fans can purchase his limited-edition, signed prints of porn stars, like the legendary Tiger Tyson and Francois Sagat, photogra- pher Ryan McGinley, or unnamed hustlers, trans women, and tattooed bodies. Shot typically in the nude, the images are mostly culled from behind-the-scenes photos of work done for erotic magazines like Honcho, Playguy, and Inches. International model (and Madonna’s ex-boyfriend) Tony Ward makes an appearance courtesy of stills from LaBruce’s Hustler White. That cult classic, a satirical work about gay hustlers in ‘90s West Hol- lywood, is joined by stills and production shots from No Skin Off My Ass, LaBruce’s debut fea- ture film which includes scenes where neo-Nazis masturbate, and alien zombies practice necrophilia. If it wasn’t clear, LaBruce’s work is controversial to some. At one point, religious zealots attempted to bomb one of his exhibition openings while some films have been banned. A section of the imagery features models splattered with blood and/or holding weapons. A series titled “Bloody Trans- woman” features a fully frontal nude body. In one shot, she is reclining on a chair, her face obscured by hair with her body and the wall behind her splattered with blood. In another, she casts an eye at the camera while the blood drips down her body. For “Redrum (Platinum Oasis, Los Angeles),” a hotel room is streaked in bloodied hand prints with a model (likely a porn actor) laying erect on the foreground while a masked man with a rifle sits in the background. Also notable in the series is the presence of disabled bodies. While “Cobra on Crutches” and “Broken Arm W. Foreskin” feature bodies that seem to be only temporary disabled, shots like “Amputee on a Chair” and “Headless Amputee” depict permanently disabled subjects with all the same care and irreverence as any other subject. The tactic goes to the heart the creative’s work which typically treats fetish and “the other” with romance or mundanity, giving it a sense of normalcy. There’s something about LaBruce’s work that speaks to a certain segment of being queer. This combination of the ongoing presence of blood, nods of death, of fetish, of sex certainly pull on threads associated with queer culture. Small inclusions like a series of images using a pig mask seem like pre-emoji meme while simple snaps of friends bring mundanity to the offering. It’s these inclusions in addition to the punk leanings that cement LaBruce as one of the fathers of the queercore movement. “I can only speak to my responsibilities as an artist,” LaBruce said when asked about his work and its aims. “Which in- clude questioning authority, challenging and subverting conventions, cinematic and otherwise, raising questions, being polemical, exploring taboo and forbidden territory, and using cinema, photography, pornography, and homosexuality for revolutionary purposes!” All images via Bruce LaBruce and Tom of Finland Store INTO Magazine January 10, 2018.

Fate conspires to land him a summer job at a nursing home where he develops a tender relationship with Mr. Peabody. Discovering that the patients are being over- medicated to make them easier to manage, Lake decides to wean Mr. Peabody off this medication and help him escape, resulting in a humorous and heartfelt road trip that strengthens their bond. The always provocative Bruce LaBruce is back with a new romantic comedy (of sorts). INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE LABRUCE How did you come to the idea of a romance between a young man and an elderly? Over the years I’ve encountered a number of young people with very specific fetishes involving relationships with much older people, and it’s always intrigued me. I’ve been told stories, most often by younger men, of their first sexual experience having been with a man in his sixties or older, and there always seemed to be a pedagogical aspect to the relationship, as well as a deep affection. Sometimes it’s a one time thing, but sometimes the fetish seems to persist. I also made a film, Hustler White, about male prostitutes and their relationships to their often much older johns.

That’s it. Raise it as a protest against all the injustices perpetrated against your kind. Raise it in solidarity with the weak and the lonely and the dispossessed of the earth, for the misfits and the sissies and the plague-ridden faggots who have been buried and forgotten by the heartless, merciless, hetero-fascist majority. Rise! Rise!” So declares Medea Yarn, the strident radical filmmaker in Bruce LaBruce’s film-within-a-film, Otto; or, Up with Dead People (2008). A zombie-political-porno, which, like most of La Bruce’s work, arouses, amuses, and repels at once, Otto is an incisive critique of gay consumer culture, and its mindless assimilation of bourgeoisie values. The critique has remained fundamental to the director’s queercore aesthetic since the mid-1980s, when BLAB (the artist’s chosen acronym) developed his prescient queer punk zine, J.D.s (co-edited with G.B. Jones). http://logger.believermag.com/post/87209818064/brucito-subversivo Page 2 sur 20 The Believer Logger - Brucito Subversivo — Brucito Subversivo 20/07/2014 18:04 Not surprisingly, his first feature films, No Skin off My Ass (1993), Super 8½(1993), and Hustler White (1996), with their B-movie depictions of taboo desire, from a skinhead fetish to gang rape and amputee sex, cemented BLAB’s cult status as the reigning daddy of queercore film.
