Did pictures of the Canterbury earthquake make you think about what you would do if a disaster struck Te Awamutu? Do you have any idea what you would do or what you need to survive for several days without electricity or water and no access to supermarkets? There’s every chance it’s something you will have to face as the Waikato has had a busy year on the natural hazards front. From tsunami warnings through to drought and high river levels, the fact that the region faces a range of disaster risks has been very clearly illustrated. However, a recent survey for Environment Waikato has shown only 8% of Waikato households are fully prepared for a disaster. This means they have an emergency plan for both at home and away, emergency items and water, and they update these items regularly. GET READY WEEK During Get Ready Week 2010 (October 10-16) Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is calling for regional residents to do more about getting better prepared. “The Waikato region has a lot of potential for natural hazards including river and stream flood- ing, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic activity, severe storms, and human pandemic,” says Waikato Civil Defence co-ordinating executive group chairman Langley Cavers. “If any one of these disasters struck the Waikato, overwhelming demand for emergency services means people could go up to three days before receiving essential items such as water, power and telecommunications. So we need to lift levels of preparedness. “The fact is disaster can strike at any time and without compassion.” PREPARE YOUR KIT Mr Cavers says each household should prepare an emergency survival kit which will last them up to three days if a disaster struck. This kit should include an adequate supply of food, a means to cook with (such as a gas cooker or barbecue) and water to get a family through the first 72 hours of an emergency, as well as a first aid kit, torches, batteries and a radio. EMERGENCY OPERATING AREAS Within the Waikato group’s region, there are three emergency operating areas (EOAs): • Waikato Valley covers north Waikato, Hamilton, Waipa, Otorohanga and Waitomo areas • Southern covers the area from South Waikato to Taupo • Thames Valley covers the Matamata, Piako, Hauraki and Thames-Coromandel districts. WAIKATO DISASTER SCENARIO Waikato Valley will be running an earthquake exercise over four days next week. The scenario will be that an earthquake has hit the Waikato region in the morning and will be felt in Matamata, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Hamilton, and Morrinsville. This exercise will involve over 100 people and will activate the Waikato Valley emergency oper- ations centre in Duke St, Hamilton. Further information about what you need to do to be prepared for an emergency is available on the website: www.waikatoregioncdemg.govt.nz

BY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu Phantom kickboxer Sam Rist has returned home sporting a bronze medal from the world junior championships for the second time in three years. The just turned 18-year- old very nearly struck silver in Serbia, losing by only two points to an Italian in the semi-finals. Rist gave as good as he took throughout the three rounds contest to decide who progressed to the final. It was a nail-biting affair that went down to the wire. The difference in the end was the Italian hit Rist two times more in the contact area than his opponent managed. In his two earlier bouts to get to the semis, Rist beat both his British and Croatian opponents. Phantom kickboxing coach, Rick Dobson says it is a brilliant result to become the third equal best in the world for the second time. Speake showed what a fine allround asset he will be for the Green team, completing a good double claiming three wickets. Medium pacer Jared Bayly showed good early season form with 3-26, as did left armer Andrew Lawry with 3-14 off four overs. Te Awamutu Sports Green again posted a match winning score of 146/6 against Otorohanga. Highlight of the innings was an unbeaten 55 by another off season signing, Ben Stinson, who plundered six sixes. Other useful contributions came from Ben Missen (12), Matthew Missen (16), Cameron Forsman (15) and Hamish Forsman (18no). Andrew Parsons, with 2-19, and Karl Swanson, 2-22, were Pirongia’s most successful bowlers. Pirongia got within sniffing distance of chasing down the target, largely thanks to aggressive knocks from Hamish Crooks (41) and Andrew Parsons (42). Highlight of this game was the first hat-trick of the season to Andrew Lawry, his third victim being superbly stumped by keeper Hamish Forsman. The glovesman looked slick all day, also claiming a catch and three stumpings against Otorohanga. Earlier in the day Pirongia thrashed Waitete by 10 wickets. In one of the biggest mis-matches for many a year, Waitete were bowled out for 11 runs, with Michael McAdam claiming 4-4, Andrew Parsons 3-4 and D. Everatts 2-2. Te Awamutu Sports Gold team had a mixed day, losing to Aroma Raiders by 29 runs and winning comfortably by 100 runs over Leamington. The Raiders scored 151 batting first at Albert Park, then dismissed the home team for 122. Webber Stewart had bowling figures of 3-16 and both Bryce McCandlish and Mike Aitken scored 30 runs for the Gold team. In game two, Te Awamutu Sports Gold scored 180/4 with Graeme Stewart top scoring with 81 and Gary Muraahi 34 not out. Leamington could only manage 80 in reply, having no answer to the leg- spinning of Michael Caldwell who claimed an impressive 4-14. All teams have two further games this Saturday. Charlesworth pips golf rivals

Terry Charlesworth rocketed home to win the Pirongia Carrying Cup on a countback from Eddie Hughes, Merv Caie and Ron Taylor at Pirongia Golf Club. Charlesworth recorded an extraordinary second round score of 8-up on par for a total of 10-up. Hughes had to settle for runner-up, despite scoring three twos at the second,13th and 16th. He was one of four players, in all, to finish on 10-up. The other two were Caie and Taylor. Hughes took out the junior jackpot with his haul of twos, along with Peter Morris who had birdies on the fifth and eighth holes. Fourteen twos in total were recorded on the day. Scoring overall was good, surprising members as the course (greens) were cored during the week. The field was smaller than usual with 12 members away at the King Country Champs in Taumarunui at the weekend. The senior men’s 0-18 scramble was won by J Staples with +7, from R Taylor +6, B Thompson +5 and K Appleby, G Bowman +4. The junior men’s 19-36 field was headed by T Charlesworth with +8, on countback from M Caie, B Fordham on +8, P Morris, E Hughes +7, J Dunn, M Fox +5 and D Thomas, K Nickson, B Young +4. Ladies leading scorers were P McFarlane +4 and 7748444AA B Staples, D Goile, P McIntyre all -1.
