Last term Te Pahu School held a scenario where an earthquake occurred. It was recorded at 7.6 on the Richter scale. During the earthquake disaster, Te Pahu School was transformed into ‘‘Stanville’’. Emergency services such as Search and Rescue, police, Civil Defence, Fire Service and St John Ambulance came as well as Dean Taylor from the Te Awamutu Courier to support the media team. TC100712SP10C NEW Paul Harris Fellow David Samuel and his wife Nicky at the Te Awamutu Rotary change-over and award night.

Rotary’s highest award — a Paul Harris Fellowship — has been presented to Te Awamutu Rotarian David Samuel, an award he says was ‘‘a total surprise’’. ‘‘I’m a rather new boy in Rotary compared to many members,’’ says Mr Samuel. ‘‘I’ve only been a member for the past nine years.’’ He says he ‘‘got the spark to become a Rotarian’’ when he was just 18 years old and boarding with a family in Palmerston North. The family included a boy of his own age, and Mr Samuel was invited to accompany the boy to a father-and- son evening at the local Rotary Club. ‘‘His father, and the club, impressed me with what they did and how they seemed to be always raising money for some cause or other.’’ Mr Samuel, a financial adviser with Goldridge Wealth Manage- ment and who has lived in Te Awamutu for the past 30 years, says about a decade ago he decided to join the organisation, so he asked if he could, ‘‘and I was welcomed into the club, because I was fairly young and it helped lower the average age’’.
