Dear Parents/Caregivers This has been a year of anniversaries with the Lynfield College 60th Reunion in June and the Auckland Shinagawa (Japan) sister city relationship 25th anniversary in July. Last week the Director of International Students Gill Austin and I joined the celebrations in Tokyo. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff hosted a function at the New Zealand Embassy and Shinagawa Mayor Hamano hosted a formal exchange of gifts where an agreement to continue the relationship was signed.

Mayor Goff acknowledged Lynfield College as being the ‘glue’

that has kept the relationship alive. We send students to Shinagawa every second year (the next exchange departs in September) and two teachers every year during the summer holidays. We host a group of 30 students from Shinagawa every August. Our thanks go to the host families who make this exchange possible.

In week 10 of Term 2 a cultural exchange group travelled to Rarotonga Island. Ten senior Te Reo Māori and Kapa Haka students, accompanied by Whaea Leauga and Whaea TeBay, were hosted by Tereora College. Activities during the week included an island tour, cultural performances, markets, food preparation, weaving, learning to play the drums and do the ‘ura

pa’u. It was a very successful cultural exchange and we look forward to being able to host a group from Tereora College in the

future.

Course Selection for 2019

Term 3 has particular importance for senior student achievement. Course selection for 2019 began last week, with presentations in Year 10, 11 and 12 assemblies, where students were issued with copies of the senior course information booklet and briefed on the importance of making careful and informed choices and were encouraged to talk to their subject teachers about which courses to take. I would urge parents and caregivers to spend time discussing possible courses with their child, while being guided by the important qualifications, awards and prerequisite information contained in the 2019 senior course information booklet. Year 9 students received their 2019 course information booklets this week. Electronic copies of both 2019 course information booklets are available on the website.

Year 10, 11 and 12 students must give their completed course selection forms to Form Teachers before Wednesday 22 August and Year 9 students must give their completed forms to Form Teachers before Tuesday 28 August. Parents are

encouraged to enter their child’s selections on the Course Selection function of the Parent Portal, which is now open. If you

have been unable to do this, please indicate that on the form. We are using the two systems simultaneously this year, with the backup of a paper copy. The Course Selection function on the portal will close on these due dates. Login and password reminders were sent by email after the senior course information booklets were issued.

Progress Conference Evenings The progress conference evenings are on Thursday 16 and Tuesday 21 August from 4 – 7pm for all year levels. This is an

opportunity to get feedback on your child’s progress and find out what work may need to be done for successful results in the

senior exams that begin in Week 8 of this term, Wednesday 12 to Friday 21 September. Further information is contained in this newsletter about booking interview times online. ALL students will be released at 2.20pm on both these days.

Kiwi Coaches Mangere Bridge bus will depart at 2.30pm.   The Titirangi bus will depart at the usual time.   The College Library will be open for any students who need to wait for buses.

Student Leadership 2019 Elections

Expression of interest forms are now available from Mrs Clark’s office for Year 11 and 12 students who would like to be

considered for a leadership position in 2019. Students have until Monday 13 August to submit an application form to Mrs Clark. Electronic speeches are due to Mrs Clark by 3.10pm Monday 20 August. Applicants’ speeches and electronic voting will take place at the Year 12 and Year 11 assemblies in Week 10.

Student Representative, Board of Trustees 2018 – 2019

Students are invited to nominate themselves or another student to be the Student Representative on the Board of Trustees for 2018 – 2019. The role of the student representative is to provide input to the BOT, based on the perspectives of the students they represent. They can make valuable contributions to decisions that affect the strategic direction of the school.

Nomination forms and additional information are available from the Returning Officer, Mr Waddington. Nominations will close at noon on Tuesday 11 September and the election will be held during Week 10. Results will be announced Monday 1 October.

Enrolments are now being taken for Year 9/2019 home zone students and out of zone categories 2, 3, 4 & 5 students.



Enrolments can be made between 8.00 – 11am and 3.15 – 4.30pm Monday to Friday, no appointment necessary. Concert Band and Big Band performed at the Rhapsody Rotorua Festival at the end of Term 2, winning Gold and Silver awards respectively.



Breyton Davison (Y13) was on What Now TV2 for his midget racing speedway achievements. Justin Chen (Y9) has been invited to compete at the Pokemon Trading Card Game World Championships in Nashville USA

this month. This is Justin’s fourth year of attending this event.



Matt Holden (Y12) and his band Silvera have made it into the top 6 bands at the 2018 Smokefreerockquest. Shyla Mani (Y12) was accepted into the New York Times Summer School programme (August). Student Leader Profile – Social Co-ordinators

Kia Ora from your 2018 Social Co-ordinators, Rebman Evening and Hannah Woolford. We are very honoured to be selected into this role, and are very grateful for this opportunity. The support from teachers, students, the rest of the Student Executive and even parents is incomparable; it makes our job so much more rewarding and worthwhile.

Organising the annual school ball was our biggest priority this year. We started off selecting a ball committee, with the help of the Head and Deputy students, as well as the wonderful Mrs Clark. We worked together really hard over terms 1 and 2 to plan and organise another

highly successful ball, with the theme ‘A Night of a Thousand Lights’

held at Ellerslie Events Centre on the 20th of July. Organising and choosing a theme, supporting decorations, music and even awards for the night all had their challenges, but the Ball Committee worked very hard to make sure everything ran smoothly on the night. From the long lunchtime meetings, that were close to everyday by the end of Term 2. Seeing all our hard work finally pay off was amazing. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Ball Committee, as without them we could not have organised such a successful night.

For us, our next task is planning the Leavers Dinner for the Year 13

Students at the end of Term 4. The Executive theme ‘Hopu i te ra’ or ‘Catch the Sun’ will be taken into consideration, as we want to encourage Year 13s to take every opportunity thrown at them in

life, as well as making the most of what life has to offer. We are so excited to be organising this event, as we want to let all the Year 13s leave high school on a positive note.

We hope that our last two terms as your Social Co-ordinators and at high school are just as successful as the first two have been, and we look forward to any new opportunities we are given. We hope we have done you proud, and thanks again for giving us the chance to represent you as the 2018 Social Co-ordinators!

Progress Conferences - Booking Parent Interview Times Online

Progress Conference evenings are to be held at Lynfield College on Thursday 16 August (A – L) and Tuesday 21 August (M – Z) from 4 – 7pm. Online booking sheets were issued to all students on Wednesday 8 August. These sheets should help you set the interview times with the teachers you wish to meet. Online bookings offer you as parents the opportunity to directly select the time at which you wish to meet teachers.

The School Interview Site opened at 2.00pm Wednesday 8 August and closes at 9.00am on the first day of progress conferences, Thursday 16 August. It then reopens for further bookings for the second progress conferences, closing finally at 9.00am on Tuesday 21 August.

Once logged in, there are three simple steps to follow in order to complete the booking process. The information sheet given to students includes a printed copy of their courses and teachers' codes; this information is used to ensure you make interview times with the relevant staff. Parents should print out the email confirmation and bring it to the interview to enable the booking times to be followed.

Any parents unable to access the booking website should complete the manual booking slip on the instruction sheet and send this back to the school office with their child. Receptionist staff will also be able to make bookings through the school office

number - phone 627 0600. The exact times for the interviews will be confirmed either by email or on the student’s slip.

PLEASE NOTE: The surname alphabetical indication for progress conferences is merely a guide to help balance numbers over the two evenings. If you are unable to attend OR unable to make an appointment with a teacher on a particular evening, please feel free to book for the other evening.

We trust you will continue to find the on-line interview bookings efficient - it has certainly ensured Progress Conferences proceed in a scheduled and timely manner. Any feedback or queries can be addressed to Deputy Principal Mr Steve Mouldey on 6270600 ext 709.

NZQA Fees and Financial Assistance – Final fees deadline 31 August Are you eligible for financial assistance?

NZQA fees appear on the portal, along with other fees. Some students will have an additional fee for recent Scholarship entries. The base fee for domestic students is $76.70 (regardless of the number of standards entered) and $383.30 for international students.

The fee can be paid by credit card online or by Direct Credit into the school’s bank account with your student’s ID as a

reference. Account details are:

Previously we indicated that the target for payment was the end of Term 2 (6 July).

THE COLLEGE WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT PAYMENT OF NZQA FEES AFTER 31 AUGUST. After that date payments will have to be made directly to NZQA.

Financial assistance is available on completion of an application form, available from the Deans’ Secretary or Mr Delgrosso’s

Office. The application form is also available at:

If you received financial assistance last year, it does not automatically carry over. A new application form must be

completed each year.

Completed forms should be returned to Mr Delgrosso’s office. It is helpful if the reduced fee is paid when the form is returned.

Financial assistance reduces the fee to $20 per candidate or $30 per family. This fee also covers Scholarship entries. To be eligible to apply for financial assistance you must be the fee-payer (usually the Parent/Caregiver) and meet at least one of the following criteria:



Be currently receiving a Work and Income or Study Link benefit, or have a current Community Services Card (known

as “benefit-based” applications).

Are not currently receiving a benefit, or do not have a current Community Services Card, but do have a joint family1 income that would entitle you to receive a Community Services Card (known as “income-based” applications).
Have two or more children who are candidates, irrespective of family income, and the total fees you would have to pay

would otherwise be more than the $200 multiple candidate maximum (known as “multiple candidate” applications). [In

effect, this means three or more children who are candidates as two candidates generate combined fees of $153.40, which is below the $200 threshold. If Scholarship entries are involved, the fees for two candidates may exceed $200.]

Cup / Trophy Return

If you have a cup or trophy which was awarded in 2017 (at Festival Awards, Senior or Junior prizegivings), please return them to the main reception in the Admin Building URGENTLY. It is NOT necessary to polish cups before their return. Thank you.

SPORTS SCENE House Competition

House netball is now under way with seniors starting this week and juniors selecting their teams for their competition, which will follow on from the senior one. With the points table locked up, this is looking to be a very tough battle.

Mt Maunganui Exchange

The annual Lynfield / Mt Maunganui sports exchange took place at Lynfield on Thursday 9 August – fortunately a beautiful sunny day! This exchange has been a highlight on the sporting calendars of both schools for 58 years. The top teams in 7 codes competed for the overall trophy based on the number of games won and lost. Most games were played at school

although hockey, squash and water polo were held at facilities off site. There is always intense rivalry…...and a lot of fun. It

was great to see ex-students come along to support these teams and in particular, good to see Grace Kukutai who now plays in the Mystics netball franchise.

This year Mt Maunganui won the overall trophy but Lynfield won the Lynmount trophy for rugby. Congratulations to our students for their fantastic sportsmanship. They were in every sense one big Lynfield team who had an awesome sports day they will remember for many years. Results as follows (L = loss, W = win):

World Champions

Two of our ex-students have just become World Champions:

Maddi Wesche (Y13, 2017) won the World Junior (U20) Women’s Shot Put when she threw a personal best at the Worlds in

Finland. Tyla Nathan-Wong (Y13, 2012) created history as a member of the NZ Womens 7s team, which is the first rugby team to win back-to-back World 7s titles.

Even more gratifying is that the industry has been rewarded with many many fantastic results. It remains that the provision of high quality courses and the best possible education for our boys are our greatest priorities. The opening of the Gibbons Trade Education Centre is one example of the Old Boys, Community and College working together to provide the best for our boys. The Centre is a modern purpose-built facility which is providing students with the highest quality preparation for a career in their chosen trades area. I would like to acknowledge all the sponsors and supporters of this project but especially the Gibbons family. The family was personally involved in the project at all stages and willingly gave considerable time and resources to ensure the highest quality results. The Education Review Office visited the school in August 2012 to assess the quality of teaching and learning occurring at Nelson College. The ERO visit involves a great deal of investigative work from their team and extensive review of our courses and policies. Nelson College is one of only 15% of schools nationwide to receive the highest grade of review. The grade of review is measured by the length of time until the next visit – ours will be five years! Perhaps most importantly it is reassurance from the highest level that we are delivering high quality learning in a positive and motivating environment or as ERO put it, "students are highly engaged in learning" ..

Revenue streams continued to diversify as the market rapidly embraced streaming, which now represents 24% of NZ wholesale recording revenues. Although growing, streaming has not yet achieved sufficient subscriber volume to create the returns previously derived from physical product and downloads. Live performance, synchronisation and merchandising are becoming of increasing importance to artist earnings. The Music Commission maintained its extensive industry consultation during this year with both Domestic and International industry discussion and feedback sessions in March and April 2015, and 57 Outward Sound recipients taking part in a survey assessing the programme.
