  • Pontefract Racecourse
Pontefract Racecourse Events RUGBY LEAGUE EVENING @RCAShowcase Objectives Our Monday evening race meeting has been poorly attended with dwindling sales in recent years. Our main objective was to turn the race meeting around with a new, innovative and engaging theme which would appeal to a broad range of potential race goers throughout West Yorkshire. We broke this overall objective down into smaller, measurable KPIs and goals: • To increase overall attendance – since 2011, we have only surpassed the 3,000 attendance mark on one occasion on this Monday Evening race meeting (3,022 in 2015). • To increase advanced sales – we wanted to see a steady growth of c5% in advance bookings for each raceday in 2016. • To increase hospitality sales and private box occupancy from just 12% on this evening in 2015 to around 50% in 2016. • To extend the appeal of a race day beyond the Racing Audience. • To create local links within the West Yorkshire sporting community. • To engage with local Rugby League Teams and their fans – the highest attended sport in the area. • To bring awareness of the Racecourse to a new audience. • To obtain as much PR coverage as possible whilst working to a minimal budget. • To increase the database. 2 Delivery Success depended on developing strong relationships with the local Rugby League teams, but also strong pre-promotion with a clear and striking message which would allow racegoers to buy in to the concept before the day. • The Racecourse approached 5 of the big Rugby League Teams in West Yorkshire – Castleford Tigers, Wakefield Wildcats, Huddersfield Giants, Leeds Rhinos and Featherstone Rovers.

Rugby League as a Televised Product in the United States of America By Mike Morris Abstract Rugby league is a form of rugby that is more similar to American football than its more globally popular cousin rugby union. This similarity to the United States of America’s most popular sport, that country’s appetite for sport, and its previous acceptance of foreign sports products makes rugby league an attractive product for American media outlets to present and promote. Rugby league’s history as a working-class sport in England and Australia will appeal to American consumers hungry for grit and authenticity from their favorite athletes and teams.

Hull History Centre: Hull Football Club Programmes L DSHFC Hull Football Club Programmes 1916-2016 Extent: [50 boxes, 22 items] Historical Background: Hull Football Club was formed late in 1865, founded by amongst others, Beevor Lambert, E.W.Wade, E.Waltham and W.H.H. Hutchinson and the five Scott brothers, sons of Rev. John Scott of St Mary’s. Although it is not clear what rules governed early matches it would appear that they were played as soccer games with 11 players each side, and played in accordance with home club rules which led to differences in the rules at each game. At the annual meeting in the George Hotel, Land of Green Ginger, on 20th October 1870, the decision was taken to formally adopt the rugby rules and in 1871, after a nomadic existence, they moved on to the Rifle Barracks field in Anlaby Road, Hull, and became the first Yorkshire club to gain membership of the new Rugby Football Union. In 1895 the club moved to the Athletic Grounds in The Boulevard. August 1895 saw the start of Rugby League after the top Northern Rugby Union clubs broke away to form the “Northern Union”. It would be known as the Northern Union until 1922. Hull achieved success over the years. During the latter half of the 1950s they made three successive Championship Final appearances, 1956-58, winning in 1956 and 1958. 1953-55 saw them reach three successive Yorkshire Cup Finals and in 1959 they made their first Wembley appearance. These all resulted in defeats and was followed by another Championship Cup defeat at Wembley in 1960.
