THE CURRENCY ACT 1992

The Currency Act ( of the Modern World Crowns) Order 1994

Laid before Tynwald on 21st June, 1994

Coming into effect on 1st July 1994

In exercise of the powers conferred on the Treasury by Section 5 (1) of the Currency Act 1992 and all other powers enabling it in that behalf, the following Order is hereby made:-

Citation and Commencement

This Order may be cited as the Currency Act (Inventions of the Modern World Crowns) Order 1994 and shall come into operation on 1st July 1994.

Interpretation In this Order :-

"the Act" means the Currency Act 1992; and "the Coins" means Crowns of the denominations of one twenty fifth Crown, one tenth Crown, one fifth Crown, one half Crown, one Crown, two Crowns, five Crowns, ten Crowns, fifteen Crowns, twenty Crowns, twenty five Crowns, thirty two Crowns, thirty five Crowns, forty Crowns, fifty Crowns and sixty five Crowns, being coins minted to commemorate Inventions of the Modern World.

Composition, Diameter and Weight of the Coins

The coins shall be circular and of the composition, diameter and weight specified in columns 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the Schedule.

Design of the Coins

The design of the coins shall be as follows :-

(a) On the obverse there shall be an effigy of Her Majesty the Queen by Raphael Maklouf with the inscription "ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II" and the year of the issue.

Price 50p (b) On the reverse there shall be :- 1) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen with an X - rayed hand with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World 1895 Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen 1845 -1923" and the denominational value in words and figures; 2) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Fox - Talbot with the portrayal of an man taking a photograph of another man, with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Positive Negative Process 1841. Fox Talbot 1800 - 1877" and the denominational value in words and figures;

3) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Charles Babbage and a diagram of how the first computer worked with the inscription"Inventions of the Modern World Charles Babbage 1791 - 1871. First Computer 1823" and the denominational value in words and figures.

4) A depiction of a cameo portrait of with a picture of the first communication equipment and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Guglielmo Marconi 1874-1957. Radio Communications 1898" and the denominational value in words and figures.

5) A depiction of a cameo portrait of with the electric light bulb and with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World 1879 Electric Light Bulb Phonograph 1877 Thomas Edison 1847-1931" and the denominational value in words and figures;

6) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Lazlo Biro with a design of a modern man kneeling next to an Egyptian lady showing her the changes in writing with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Lazlo Biro 1900-1985 Father of the Modern Pen 1944" and the denominational value in words and figures; 7) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Charles Pathe with a portrayal of an original movie camera and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Charles Pathe 1858-1932 Movie Camera 1896" and the denominational value in words and figures; 8) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Alexander Fleming with a portrayal of a microscope and penicillin in a dish and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Alexander Fleming 1881-1955 Antibiotic Drug Penicillin 1928" and the denominational value in words and figures; 9) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Michael Faraday with electrical apparatus and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Michael Faraday 1791-1867 Experimental Researches in Electricity 1831" and the denominational value in words and figures;

10) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Werner Von Braun with a drawing of a rocket flying past a planet with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Werner Von Braun 1912-1977 Pioneer of Space 1969" and the denominational value in words and figures;

11) A depiction of a cameo portrait of Rudolph Diesel with a portrayal of the original Diesel Engine and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Rudolph Diesel 1855-1913 The Diesel Engine 1897" and the denominational value in words and figures;

12) A depiction of a cameo portrait of with a portrayal of the first voice and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Alexander Graham Bell 1847-1922 First Voice Transmissions 1876" and the denominational value in words and figures;

13) A depiction of a cameo portrait of with a portrayal of the first tube and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World John Logie Baird 1888-1946 The Father of Television 1925" and the denominational value in words and figures;

14) A depiction of the Compass with the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Compass" and the denominational value in words and figures, and

15) A depiction of a cameo picture of Emile Berliner with the portrayal of a man and woman placing a record on a gramophone and the inscription "Inventions of the Modern World Emile Berliner 1851-1929 Gramophone 1887" and the denominational value in words and figures. SCHEDULE

Minister for the Treasury Explanatory Note (This note is not part of the Order) The Currency Act (Inventions of the Modern World Crowns) Order 1994 authorises the Treasury to issue base and precious metal Crowns and fractional and multiple versions thereof, to commemorate Inventions of the Modern World.
