INTRODUCTION: G1.0 The General Regulations that are common to all Degree Programmes of NITK Surathkal, are presented here. Specific aspects of the Regulations pertaining to a particular Degree Programme are given separately along with the corresponding Curriculum. G1.1 The provisions contained in this set of Regulations govern the policies and procedures, on the admission of students, imparting instructions of courses, conducting of the examinations and evaluation and certification of students’ performance leading to the said Degree Programme(s). G1.2 This set of Regulations, on approval by the Senate, may supersede all the corresponding earlier sets of Regulations of the Institute, along with all the amendments thereto, and shall be binding on all students undergoing the said Degree Programme(s). G1.3 This set of Regulations may evolve and get revised/refined or updated or amended or modified or changed through appropriate approvals from the Senate, from time to time, and shall be binding on all parties concerned, including the Students, Faculty, Staff, Departments, Institute Authorities. G1.4 In order to guarantee fairness and justice to all the parties concerned, in view of the periodic evolutionary refinements, any specific issues or matters of concern shall be addressed separately, by the appropriate authorities , as and when found necessary. G1.5 The effect of year -to-year (periodic) refinements in the Academic Regulations & Curriculum, on the students admitted in earlier years , shall be dealt with appropriately and carefully, so as to ensure that those students are not subjected to any unfair situation whatsoever, although they are required to conform to these revised set of Regulations & Curriculum, without any undue favour or considerations. G1.6 The Senate may consider any issues or matters of concern relating to any or all the Academic Activities of the Institute, for appropriate action, irrespective of whether a reference is made (or the nature and extent of any reference if so present) here in this set of Regulations or otherwise. G1.7 Whenever outside Experts need to be co-opted and/or invited for any of the Academic Committee Meetings, prior approval from the Chairman of the Senate/BOS shall be obtained, justifying the need, based on the agenda items of such Academic Committee Meetings. The outside experts shall be entitled for TA/DA/etc as per the prevailing Institute Rules. G1.8 All disputes arising from this set of Regulations must be addressed to the Senate. The decision of the Senate is final and binding on all parties concerned. Further, any legal disputes arising from this set of Regulations shall be limited to the legal jurisdiction determined by the location of the Institute and not that of any other parties. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NITK- UG- Curriculum 2018 Page 4 of 17 NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KARNATAKA, SURATHKAL ---------------------------------------------------------- G2. DEFINITIONS: Unless the context otherwise requires – · “Institute”/“NITK”/“NITKS” means, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal. · “BOG” means, the Board of Governors (BOG) of the Institute. · “MHRD” means, the Ministry of Human Resources Development, GOI. · “JEE” means, Joint Entrance Examination. · “GATE” means, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. · “Senate” means, the Faculty Senate of the Institute. · “Director” means, the Director of the Institute. · “BOS” means, the Board of Studies of the Institute. · “Dean (A)” means, the Dean (Academic). · “Dean (FW)” means, the Dean (Faculty Welfare) · “Dean (P&D)” means, the Dean (Planning and Development) · “Dean (R&C)” means, the Dean (Research & Consultancy) · “Dean (SW)” means, Dean (Students Welfare). · “Dean (AA&IR)” means, Dean (Alumni Affairs & Institutional Relations). · “NITKS Hostels” means, NITK-Surathkal Hostels. · “HOD” means, the Head of the Department. · “Programme Co-ordinator” means, a faculty in charge of an academic programme, particularly in case of PG and/or Research degree programmes . · “Parent Department” or “Degree Awarding Department” means, the department that offers the degree programme that a student undergoes, or the department to which the Research-Guide/Programme-Coordinator belongs. · “DAC” or “PAC” means, the Departmental/Programme Academic Committee. · “DUGC” means, the Departmental Under Graduate Committee. · “DPGC” means, the Departmental Post Graduate Committee. · “PWEC” means, the Project Work Evaluation Committee. · “DRPC” means, Doctoral Research Programme Committee. · “RPAC” means, Research Progress Assessment Committee. · “MTAC” means Master’s Thesis Assessment Committee. · “DTAC” means, Doctoral Thesis Assessment Committee. · “DAAB” means, the Departmental Academic Appeals Board. · “Faculty Advisor” means the Faculty Advisor or the Panel of Faculty Advisors, in a Parent Department, for a group(admission-batch) of students. · “Course” means, a specific subject usually identified by its course-number and course- title , with a specified syllabus /course-description, a set of references , taught by some teacher (s)/course-instructor(s) to a specific class (group of students) during a specific academic-session /semester. · “Course Instructor” means, the teacher or the Course Instructor of a Course. · “Class/Course Committee” means, the Class/Course Committee of a class/course. · “Project Guide” means, the faculty who guides the Major Project of the student. · “Research Guide” means, the faculty who guides the Research student/scholar, including the Additional Guide. · “He” includes both genders he and she; similarly, “his” and/or “him” includes “her” as well, in all the cases. · “Regulations” means, this set of Academic Regulations. · “Curriculum” includes the set of Academic Regulations, Course-Structure and Course-Contents. · “MOU” means, Memorandum of Understanding. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NITK- UG- Curriculum 2018 Page

    About the Book IGNCA is a treasure-trove of cultural artifacts including a rich repository of Video documentaries (published) and Audio and Video DVDs (unpublished). This book – based on the author’s two-year project -- envisions an on-line A-V cultural archive KALASAMPADA that consists of A-V materials stored at IGNCA for the categories of: Interviews; Ritual Documentation; Archaeological Sites and Walk-through; Events; Festivals; Performances (music-dance-theatre-puppetry-mime); Lectures; Seminars; and Workshops. In order to make such a wide variety of materials available on-line – initially on the Intranet, subsequently on a potential Extranet, and eventually (although very selectively) on the Internet – the following digitisation road-map is observed in the project: Conversion of primary A-V materials from analogue to digital format; Creation of data sheets for metadata tagging, following the international standard of Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES); Integration of metadata with primary A-V material in IGNCA’s Intranet; Access and retrieval by “simple search” with keywords for casual browsers and “advanced search” for users, researchers and scholars with reference to groups of keywords from the intranet. The objectives of the project of on-line A-V cultural archive are: to bring it into public domain; to make it inter-active for scholars; and to make it internationally compatible. Basic advantages of such a project are really five-fold. First, a digital A-V archive assures the near permanent durability of the A-V material. Secondly, it allows need-based quality enhancement. Thirdly, an archive of this kind makes room for highly economic storage of vulnerable Audio and Video files.

  • Is a Concept of Melodic Organization in Indian Classical Music, Operating Between the Levels of Scale and Melody As These Terms Are Understood in Western Music
    RAGA RAGA AS A KEY CONCEPT R-aga (Hindi/Urdu: r-ag, Tamil: r-agam) is a concept of melodic organization in Indian classical music, operating between the levels of scale and melody as these terms are understood in Western music. Several ragas may share the same scale (that, mela); each raga can serve as the basis for an infinite number of melodic compositions or improvisations. Raga is central to Indian musical theory, aesthetics and practice; but it also links musical sounds with associated cultural meanings, and thus has important connections with the visual arts, literature and drama/film. It is a central feature of both the Northern (Hindusthani) and Southern (Karnatak) branches of the Indian classical music tradition, which is recognized internationally as a symbol of South Asian culture.i To some extent raga distinguishes classical music from other types of South Asian music; but elements of raga also occur in many types of folk, devotional, ritual, stage and film music in South Asia.ii There is no direct equivalent in Western music; raga encapsulates aspects of the relationship between music and meaning that have only recently been explored by Western theorists (see later). Although a technical term of music, raga has found its way into common parlance, in expressions such as ‘he sings his own rag’ (i.e. ‘blows his own trumpet’), ‘he sings a long rag’ (talks long- windedly), or ‘rags, cooking and turbans [turn out differently each time]’. Such expressions reflect different aspects of the concept of raga as a musical term, and the importance of music as a source of cultural metaphors.

    Chapter V Agra gharana & areas of Impact This chapter takes critical stock of the impacts of Agra Gharana on the major areas other than its main impact on Indian classical music scenes described in earlier chapter. The research carried out in this regard and detailed out in the chapter clearly indicates that the Marathi Stage Music and earlier Indian Film Music were the two major areas of impacts of Agra Gharana. In Bengal, the Nazrul geeti and Raga Pradhan had an impact of Agra gharana music and musicians. Marathi Stage Music (which got developed as a semi classical form during the period 1910 to 1935) and Indian Film Music (which made beginning in 1931 with the release of first Indian Talkie Alamaara) both these new forms of creative expressions got developed with the immense and pioneering contribution from the singers, music directors, music teachers of Agra Gharana and the Agra Gharana itself. This chapter enumerates and explains contribution of the Agra Gharana through the singers, music directors and the music teachers. Before going through impact of Agra Gharana on major areas like Marathi Stage Music and Indian Film Music it will be important to dwell upon a question like - why Agra Gharana was found more suitable for these two new forms of creative expression? To answer this question one needs to look in to characteristics of art form of drama/film and Nazrul geeti and characteristics of Agra Gharana as follows – Defining the essential nature of Drama, Bharata has made the following statement in the Natyashastra: Natya is a representational statement (anukirtana) of the emotional states of this entire triple world.
