Newport Summer Comedy Moves Newport Summer Comedy Moves The vaunted Newport Comedy Series, which has brought the likes of Bill Cosby (pre scandal), Jeff Dunham and Cheech and Chong, has moved in more ways than one this year. First, this year it’s mostly in the fall, not summer. That’s a side effect of the other move, from the Newport Yachting Center, the venerable downtown performance venue that was decommissioned early this year, to the Newport Hyatt Regency ballroom. The change in venue caused delays, but, “Ultimately it seems to be working out well,” says former sportscaster Joe Rocco, one of the event’s organizers. “Audience feedback has been really positive,” he says, after the first show of the revived series, which featured Kathy Griffin. “It’s more comfortable, between the chairs and air conditioning, which is huge. And we’re less weather dependent. Plus here, the front few rows are right up there – you can really see everything the performer does.” Although the venue’s capacity is smaller, it still seats over 1,000. So far, this year’s approaching performers, in addition to Griffin, are Paula Poundstone and Lenny Clarke. “As entertaining a line-up as we’ve had, laugh-meter-wise,” says Rocco, whose partner, Bill Blumenreich of Boston’s Wilbur Theatre, books the acts. There are also hopes of a Natasha Leggero performance – the rapidly rising actress had to reschedule a planned show because of conflicts with a film and her new sitcom. And more performers may be added. Praising Poudstone, Rocco notes, “It’s amazing how much she’s done, how many comedy awards she’s won, how many experiences she’s had.” He’s also excited about Lenny Clarke – currently best known for his role on “Rescue Me” with Denis Leary, and perhaps for his thick Boston accent. “Clarke may have been in more failed sitcoms than anyone,” says Rocco. “I counted, and I think he’s been in 52 different TV shows.” If that’s not a recipe for laughs, it’s haahd to imagine what would be. Regional actor/comedian Tony V will open for Clarke – another Bostonian who tends to show up everywhere, from “Brotherhood” to “Seinfeld” and from “Conan O’Brien” to Comedy Central. Newport (fall) Comedy Series: Paula Poundstone Oct 9; Lenny Clarke Oct 16. 8pm at the Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island. Newportcomedy.com.

  • Women in Comedy
WOMEN IN COMEDY BACKGROUND: MAKERS: Women In Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Norman Lear’s Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Today, movies like Bridesmaids break box office records and the women of Saturday Night Live are often more famous than their male counterparts, but it didn’t start out that way. Early breakout female comics had to keep their jokes within the safe context of marriage, motherhood, and a man’s world. But they still found a way to be subversive. As Joan Rivers puts it, “I was furious about having to get married… It all comes out on stage. So that’s what I do onstage. I really tell them the truth.” Soon comedy became a vehicle for women to take on some of the most sensitive and controversial issues of the day. On television in the 1960s, entertainers like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore illuminated the core issues of feminism with humor that was both sly and truthful. But it took a powerful male producer to bring the most provocative feminist characters onto the screen. Maude, who Lear introduced to audiences in 1971, was a feminist firebrand on her fourth husband, strong and independent with a razor sharp wit. “When Maude was on the air,” Lear tells us, “I used to get letters from the First Lady, Betty Ford…. And she always signed every letter ‘Maude’s #1 fan’.” When Maude chose to have an abortion at 47, religious groups protested, but the episode was watched by 65 million Americans.

  • Residue Principal Investigator: Dr
Residue Principal Investigator: Dr. Preston B. Cline – [email protected] Version: V.4 Monday, April 20, 2020 Summary You are not broken. You are not a victim. You are not a survivor. You have chosen the hard path—a path full of extreme experiences, both good and bad, which leave memories. These memories, in turn, leave a residue within you, which if processed can serve as the fuel that moves us to wisdom and joy. If unprocessed, however, it will begin to build up, to harden, until you can no longer move or breathe, until all you know is pain and sorrow. This paper is based on the rejection of the idea that Operators, in Medicine, Fire, Law Enforcement and Military, must sacrifice their lives and souls, in exchange for living a life of service. That together, as a community of Operators and academics, we can find ways to help them process their extreme experiences into the fuel that grows their wisdom, not the poison that fuels their sorrow This project is about finding better ways to process that residue. In the fall of 2018, I had a serendipitous interaction with the actor Tom Hardy, who shared his approach to residue with me. The idea is that after deeply inhabiting a character, there will come a time when an actor must move on and embrace the next character they will play. In some cases, an acting role may leave a residue that must be processed in order to add to, and not distract from, the next role. With help from actors Tom Hardy, Scott Glenn and Denis Leary, along with hundreds of Operators, this paper explores the idea that we can help Operators process the residue of their experiences in a way that moves them toward their potential, rather than toward their sorrow.

  • Understanding and Managing Student Responses to Comedy
[Scholarship-to-Practice Column] DISCOMFORT, OFFENSE, TRIGGER: UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING STUDENT RESPONSES TO COMEDY Amma Marfo, SPEAK Educators Jason Meier, Emerson College OMEDY, LIKE HIGHER EDUCATION, is an institution forged from and heavily influenced by tradition. CPerformers readily recite their influences, drawing a clear line between their idols and the art they current- ly create onstage. However, because culture and norms surrounding comedy are considerably more malleable than those surrounding higher education, a previously symbiotic relationship has become harder to navigate with understanding. In one Instagram post, Roy Wood, Jr. managed to encapsulate the current challenges these norms highlight between comedy and campus environments. The comedian,Daily Show correspondent and NACA Hall of Famer shared a series of texts to a comic playing his first college campus. Among the gems within the series are “material wise. [sic] always ask for what hte [sic] language parameters are (if you care about getting rebooked) otherwise be yourself,” “don’t go over your time. but DEFINITELY don’t go under your time,” and “read the campus paper when you get to the venue. Or read it online. It’s a treasure trove of local material and things you can use as natural segues into stuff you already have jokes about.” The advice depicts someone who has, in the lexicon of performance, “paid his dues” and wanted to provide a strong performance. It also reflects generational differences that are being blamed for the dread many perform- ers feel in this environment. For example, this generation doesn’t really f*** w/ standup comedy. they didn’t grow up with it on tv so you have to connect with them on the things that interest them first if you really want to take them on a journey into your world [...] not their fault.
