The subterranean fauna increases only slightly to global biodiversity, but is of a high scientific importance in the study of mechanisms of colonisation of extreme environments as well as the nature of adaptations to these environments. I started my scientific career with both the taxonomic and the ecological investigations of copepods in hypogean environments of Slovenia. Copepod crustaceans may be the most abundant metazoans on Earth and can be found in virtually every kind of aquatic habitat from the deepest ocean trenches to damp leaf litter at high altitude in the Himalayas and from hot springs to polar seas. They are frequently found in all kinds of hypogean habitats. My research was aimed at unravelling the spatial structure of copepod fauna in the epikarst. In particular, I was interested in understanding the distribution and the ecology of copepods in the epikarst zone. For understanding of the structure and physico-chemistry of epikarst, I also studied the ecological and microgeographic distribution of epikarst copepods. Research presented in this monograph was conducted at the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU (Postojna) and National Institute of Biology (Ljubljana) within the framework of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport’s programme under the mentorship of Dr. Anton Brancelj and Dr. Andrej Blejec. The hypogean fauna from percolation water and from pools, filled with percolation water from six cave systems in Slovenia, was studied in the period 2000–2003. Besides collecting fauna, parallel measurements of physical properties of the percolation water, performing the chemical analyses of water in the laboratory and the determining of the specimens were conducted. The methodologies used to asses epikarst habitats and fauna living there were also useful for the evaluation of human impacts on the environment, especially karst waters. Research represents the pioneer work on selected ecological aspects of the epikarst fauna. Field observations and studies are continuing. After concluding my doctoral studies I advanced with my research of the epikarst fauna within the framework of the research programme of the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU. I enlarged my studies by par- ticipating in the bilateral project USA-Slovenia Cooperation in Science and Technology in years 2003 and 2004 which was supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport (Slovenia) and Karst Waters Institute (USA). The book has benefited from comments by two referees and discussion with several specialists: Dr. Anton Brancelj, Dr. Andrej Blejec, Prof. Dr. Tone Novak and Dr. Peter A-Carsologica_Pipan.indd 9 7.3.2007 9:43:15 Trontelj who guided me during my PhD work. ZooKeys 603: 33–69. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.603.7480 Abstract Description and meristic analysis of eleven species of Microcyclops recorded in America were performed based on the examination of type specimens and fresh material. Microscopic analysis of oral appendages, such as the shape and armature of the distal coxal endite of the maxilla, the ornamentation on the caudal surface of the antenna, and the intercoxal sclerites and armament of the inner basis of all swimming ap- pendages, were characteristics that allowed the differentiation between species. Among these species, our study confirmed the synonymy of M. diversus Kiefer, 1935 with M. ceibaensis (Marsh, 1919). The results of our observations showed that M. alius (Kiefer, 1935) is a junior synonym of M.

Two obligate cave-dwelling species of cyclopoid copepods (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) were discovered inside caves in central Thailand. Siamcyclops cavernicolus gen. et sp. nov. was recognised as a member of a new genus. It resembles Bryocyclops jankowskajae Monchenko, 1972 from Uzbekistan (part of the former USSR). It differs from it by (1) lack of pointed triangular prominences on the intercoxal sclerite of the fourth swimming leg, (2) mandibular palp with three setae, (3) spine and setal formulae of swimming legs 3.3.3.2 and 5.5.5.5, respectively, and (4) specifi c shape of spermatophore.

The study of small water bodies contributes to understanding aquatic organisms’ adaptation to sharp fluctuations in external factors. Studies of biological com- munities’ response to fluctuations in external factors can be used for bioindication of the ecological state of small water bodies. In this regard, the purpose of the research is to study the structure of zooplankton of small lakes in South-East Kazakhstan in connection with various physicochemical parameters to understand the role of biological variables in assessing the ecological state of aquatic Citation: Aubakirova, M.; Krupa, E.; ecosystems. Here, we assessed the species richness S and taxonomic distinctness D+ (used a proxy of phylogenetic diversity) of crustacean zooplankton assemblages from 40 ponds and small lakes located in Albania and North Macedonia and tested whether they could be predicted by waterbodies’ landscape characteristics (area, perimeter, and altitude), together with local bioclimatic conditions that were derived from Wordclim and MODIS databases. The results showed that a minimum adequate model, including the positive effects of non-arboreal vegetation cover and temperature seasonality, together with the negative influence of the mean temperature of the wettest quarter, effectively predicted assemblages’ variation in species richness.

Macrophytes were collected in homogeneous stands and washed. Plankton samples, taken from the water column surface and bottom, were obtained using a motor pump, with a 70 µm mesh plankton net for filtration. Twelve taxa of Cyclopidae were identified. Among them, Macrocyclops albidus albidus, Paracyclops chiltoni, Ectocyclops rubescens, Homocyclops ater, Eucyclops solitarius, Mesocyclops longisetus curvatus, Mesocyclops ogunnus, and Microcyclops finitimus were new finds for this floodplain. Eight species were recorded exclusively in aquatic macrophyte samples. Among these species, M. albidus albidus and M. finitimus presented greatest abundances. Only four species were recorded in plankton samples, and Thermocyclops minutus and Thermocyclops decipiens are limited to this type of habitat. Among these four species, T. minutus is the most abundant, espe- cially in lentic habitats.
