NOBRIS and RICHARD E. FIDLER ABSTRACT A systematic study was made of one of Ohio's principal aquifers, a sand and gravel outwash in the Scioto River Valley, to determine the feasibility of de­ veloping a ground-water supply of 20 million gallons per day at a site near Piketon. The first part of the study was spent in determining the thickness and physical properties of the sand and gravel aquifer and in drilling test wells to determine the best site for the supply wells. The second part of the investigation was an aquifer infiltration test to deter­ mine the hyraulic properties of the aquifer and the conditions of stream re­ charge. A well 83 feet deep was drilled on the flood plain and was pumped for 9 days at the rate of 1,000 gallons per minute. The effect on the hydrologic system during and after the pumping was determined by measuring the water levels in an array of deep and shallow observation wells and in 8 drive-point wells installed in the bed of the river. Seldom have more comprehensive data been collected showing the effects of pumping on a natural, unconfined, hydrologic system. From these data were calculated the coefficient of transmissibility (215,000 gallons per day per foot) and the rate of streambed infiltration (0.235 million gallons per day per acre per foot). The aquifer was tested near the end of a long drought; so the ground-water levels and the river stage were very nearly following a level trend. Because the ground-water levels were essentially unaffected by extraneous influences, the test data are probably as precise and uncomplicated as is practical to obtain in the field. These data proved to be valid for use as design criteria for the location, spacing, and construction of four supply wells. The third part of the investigation was the testing and quantitative evaluation of the four supply wells before they were put into service. The wells were found to perform about as predicted, indicating that the hydraulic properties of the aquifer, as determined by standard methods, are fairly representative. INTRODUCTION PURPOSE AND SCOPE In 1963-65 the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Division of Water of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, investigated on behalf of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission the feasibility of developing a ground-water supply of 20 mgd (million gallons per day) at a site near Piketon, in the Scioto River valley in southern Ohio (fig. 1).     THE SCIOTO MARSHES OP OHIO: A STUDY IN THE GEOGRAPHY OF ONION CULTURE.1 CARL DUDLEY VARVEL, Ohio State University. THE AREA AS A UNIT. The Scioto Marsh, a bog soil province in the western part of Hardin County, is the largest of several such areas in the glaciated region of Ohio. The term "Marsh" is no longer used here in the technical sense, but is a "carry over" from the days before the area was drained. It extends over 16,000 acres2 and is believed to be one of the largest continuous onion producing areas in North America. Here the growing onion characterizes the summer landscape. The subject of its culture is foremost in local conversation. Onion cultivation leads successively to a condition of distinct wealth or relative poverty. It motivates an interstate migration of interesting laborers and furnishes the raison d'etre of three settlements within the local region. The greatest agricultural interest of most of the landowners is the onion. On an average about 3,500 acres of onions are harvested. In recent years the acreage has diminished largely as a result of several years of unfavorable climatic conditions which minimized the merchantable yield per acre. In 1915, an exceptional year, over 5,500 acres were harvested. In approaching the region from all directions one sees distinctly the terminal moraines and other glacial deposits. (Fig. 1.) The deposits at the north are part of the watershed between the Ohio River system and the Lake Erie drainage basin. The drumlins and kames at the west and south enclose the marsh and divide the waters of the Scioto Valley from those of the Miami Valley.

Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. Human Impacts on the Lower Olentangy River Watershed Cultural History Prehistoric Indians found the Olentangy watershed to be a fertile land for emerging agriculture as well as a source of rocks and flint needed for tool making. These early cultures -- Paleo Indian, Adena, Hopewell and Fort Ancient -- left behind artifacts, ceremonial and burial mounds, and traces of villages that still tantalize archaeologists. There is evidence that the Wyandotte Indians used the Olentangy Indian Caverns, located off Home Road in Delaware County, as a haven from the weather and from their enemies, the Delaware Indians. One of the large rooms contains "Council Rock," used by the Wyandotte for tribal ceremonies. Various artifacts found in the caverns indicate that the Indian Council Room was used by Wyandotte braves for making arrows and other stone implements until as late as 1810. Hundreds of these items were found when the caverns were opened and some are on display in the Museum. His own people killed “Leatherlips,” the chief of the Wyandotte, at the entrance to the cavern. Concrete stairways descend 55 feet to the maze of natural passages and rooms occupying three different levels. The second level contains "Indian Lover's Bench," "Battleship Rock" and "The Crystal Room." "Fat Man's Misery" is a narrow passage leading to "Cathedral Hall" and "The Bell Tower" room 105 feet below the earth's surface. Beyond are passages and rooms still unexplored. A fourth level where an underground river is flowing to the Olentangy River a half-mile east has been partially explored, but not opened to the public.
