Differences in assemblages result in biotic complementarities and redundancies among sites, which may be quantified through multi-dimensional approaches incorporating taxonomic β-diversity (TBD), functional β-diversity (FBD) and phylogenetic β-diversity (PBD). Here we test the hypothesis that snake TBD, FBD and PBD are influenced by environmental gradients, independently of geographic distance. The gradients tested are expected to affect snake assemblages indirectly, such as clay content in the soil determining primary production and height above the nearest drainage determining prey availability, or directly, such as percentage of tree cover determining availability of resting and nesting sites, and climate (temperature and precipitation) causing physiological filtering. We sampled snakes in 21 sampling plots, each covering five km2, distributed over 880 km in the central-southern Amazon Basin. Despite heavy deforestation, the density of adults seems to be similar in deforested pastures as in forests. We aimed to infer the mechanisms responsible for this apparent resilience in pastures and we tested two hypotheses to explain it: 1) adult palms survived in pastures because they were spared from logging, and 2) adults occurred in pastures through the resilience of large juvenile rosettes, which survived through subterranean meristems and later developed into adults. For this purpose, we characterized the demographic structure of C. quindiuense in a total of 122 plots of 400 m2 in forests and pastures at two sites with contrasted land use histories in Colombia and Peru. Additionally, we implemented growth models that allowed us to estimate the age of individuals at four sites. These data were combined with information collected from local land managers in order to complete our knowledge on the land use history at each site. At two sites, the presence of old individuals up to 169 years and a wide age range evidenced that, at least, a portion of current adults in pastures were spared from logging at the time of deforestation. -

Given its recent origin and continental insularity among tropical lowlands, the páramo evolved as a biodiversity hotspot, with a vascular flora of more than 3400 species and high endemism. Moreover, the páramo provides many ecosystem services for human populations, essentially water supply and carbon storage. Anthropogenic activities, mostly agriculture and burning- grazing practices, as well as climate change are major threats for the páramo’s integrity. Consequently, further scientific research and conservation strategies must be oriented towards this unique region. Botanical and ecological knowledge on the páramo is extensive but geographically heterogeneous. Moreover, most research studies and management strategies are carried out at local to national scale and given the vast extension of the páramo, regional studies are also needed. The principal limitation for regional páramo studies is the lack of a substantial source of good quality botanical data covering the entire region and freely accessible. To meet the needs for a regional data source, we created VegPáramo, a floristic and vegetation database containing 3000 vegetation plots sampled with the phytosociological method throughout the páramo region and proceeding from the existing literature and our fieldwork (Chapter 1). -

THE PERCEPTION AND STUDY OF RURAL CHANGE IN THE ANDES: THE INKA CASE Mary Van Buren ABSTRACT: Archaeologists investigating social complexity often focus on traits that differentiate complex societies from the simpler organizational forms preceding them. Few approaches address the role of households or communities in the development and consolidation of complex polities. Those that do, notably hierarchy models, treat such constituent elements as unchanging and irrelevant to the operation of the system as a whole. An examination of the Inka empire indicates that imperial expansion both modified and was predicated upon the organization of conquered groups. This suggests that archaeologists must address both the structure and history of rural hinterlands in models of social complexity. INTRODUCTION In their investigation of social complexity archaeologists often focus ontraits and institutions which differentiate stratified and state societies from the simplerorganizational forms preceding them. Such features as centralized authority, full-time craftspecialization and urban environments have been used as criteria for establishing the existenceof states and are usually viewed as the constituent elementsof complexity. As a result of equating this array of traits with complex social forms, simplyorganized groups embedded within states are usually excluded from the purview of social evolutionary theory. Rural communities, families and kin groups are not seen as integral parts of complex sociopolitical entities, but areviewed, instead, as stable social units which remain unchanged by their new position within the lowest ranks of a larger hierarchy.In the literature on Andean societies, this view of local level stability is especially prevalent. Social forms such as ayllus, rural communities and traditional leaders are believed to display a remarkable degree of continuity from pre-Incaic timesuntil the end of the colonial period, despite the radical changes that occurred in theAndes. -

Vol. 19: 177–186, 2012 ENDANGERED SPECIES RESEARCH Published online December 20 doi: 10.3354/esr00469 Endang Species Res Trends in local wildlife hunting, trade and control in the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot, northeastern Peru Noga Shanee* Neotropical Primate Conservation, 23 Portland Road, Stretford, Manchester M320PH, UK ABSTRACT: The Amazonas and San Martin regions in northeastern Peru compose a central part of the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot, considered one of the highest conservation priorities worldwide. Many of the area’s species have been identified as requiring urgent conservation measures by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and International Primatological Society, as well as being protected under Peruvian law. In this study I present data about wildlife traffic and local wildlife use in Ama- zonas and San Martin, collected between April 2007 and December 2011. I highlight the trends in, and causes of, illegal trade. I examine the limitations on, and opportunities for, the authorities con- trolling these practices in the context of national and international pressures and the process of governmental decentralization. The most hunted orders were Psittaciformes (n = 1497) and Pri- mates (n = 279). Animals were mainly found in the hands of traffickers (57%), usually on the way from the neighbouring region of Loreto to the coast. Endangered species were mainly kept as tourist attractions in recreation centres, hotels, or restaurants. Wildlife authorities suffer from a severe lack of specialized personnel, resources and rescue centres, and an often contradictory and inadequate legal framework. I also found a great difference in operation and efficiency between the 2 regions, suggesting that local and regional politics, rather than international pressures and agreements, influence control of species extraction, making fauna in San Martin and Amazonas vulnerable to frequent political changes. -
Eastern Cordillera Real Oriental Paramos and Montane Forests
ECORREGIONAL ASSESSMENT: EASTERN CORDILLERA REAL ORIENTAL PARAMOS AND MONTANE FORESTS The Nature Conservancy, EcoCiencia y Fundación AGUA. 2005. Evaluación Ecorregional de los Páramos y Bosques Montanos de la Cordillera Real Oriental. Quito-Ecuador. The ecoregional assessment of Eastern Cordillera Real Paramos and Montane Forests was implemented to design a network of conservation areas that can maintain successfully in the long-term characteristic biodiversity of the region, as well as ecological processes. The Tropical Andes region located in northern South America is gifted with an impressive array of biodiversity. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has worked for several years in collaboration with local organizations implementing conservation actions on this region. Within the Tropical Andes the Eastern Cordillera Real Paramos and Montane Forests are found, which have been identified as strategic areas for directing conservation efforts.The Nothern Andes Program of the World Fund for Nature (WWF), in the biodiversity vision for the Northern Andes, identified 65 priority areas for conservation on this region that groups several ecoregions. This process identified the Eastern Cordillera Real Montane Forests ecoregion as a priority within the ecoregional complex. With this background, the former Ecuador Program (now Northern Tropical Andes Conservation Program) in collaboration with EcoCiencia and Fundación AGUA, decided to develop an ecoregionall assessement on this ecoregion to refine the results and data produced by WWF.
