Title: Pet Match up Recommended For: 2-5 Year Olds DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED BY JABA STAFF Title: Pet Match Up Recommended for: 2-5 Year Olds Objectives: Children Adults • Creativity • Creativity • Cooperation/sharing • Attention to detail • Attention to detail • Positive mood • Communication • Memory/reminiscence • Problem solving Materials Needed: • Cut out pictures of pets (from magazines, photos, or websites) Methods: Facilitator Preparation 1. Cut out the pictures of the pets from the bottom of the activity sheet. Intergenerational Participants 1. Introduction- sing the hello song together as a group. 2. Upon entering the room, each child will be given a single picture of half of a pet. 3. Have the children go around the room searching for the adult who has their matching pet. 4. Once they find their match, have the IG pairs discuss: a. What type of pet this is? How do you take care of a pet? What other animals can be pets? How would you take care of them? Do you have a pet? What kind, name, age, etc. 5. Have the IG pairs share with the group what they learned about their partner. a. Option: Mix up the papers and repeat exercise with new partners/pets. 6. Clean up and goodbye song. Special Considerations • This activity can be done outside. • Participants can bring in a picture of their pet and tell a story about their animal. Getting To Know You • “______ can you ask ______ what their favorite animal is?” • Have IG pairs discuss what types of pets they would not want to have in the home. Encouraging Interaction DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED BY JABA STAFF • Have IG pairs discuss what to do if a pet ran away. • Have IG pairs discuss why people like to have pets as animals. • Have IG pairs brainstorm what animals can live in the home and what animals have to stay at the zoo. • Have IG pairs discuss what a seeing eye dog/guide dog is. Extension Opportunities • Zoo animal matching game. • Farm animal matching game. • Download the Zoo Animals app ($3.99) to play a similar game on the iPad. Learn the names of animals in different languages and hear the sounds they make.     ANIMALOGY: CATS AND OTHER FELINES BY BASSAM IMAM 1 POPULAR CAT BREEDS The Abyssinian is a very popular breed of cat. Although the exact origin of this cat is unknown, it was first officially recorded in 1871 in England. It was initially called the British Ticked cat. The Abyssinian wasn’t ‘fully incorporated’ into the U.S. until the 1930s. In addition, there are some physical similarities between this cat and the Ancient Egyptian cats. However, other theories point to South East Asia, the Indian Ocean, or a relation to the African wild cat. There’s no reason for us to ponder about this. Let the experts deal with it. The Abyssinian is a very intelligent, energetic, gentle, loving, and often distrustful of strangers, is social (with those it knows) and doesn’t like to be left alone. It is slim, with large sized ears (must be cleaned on a regular basis) pointing slightly forwards, giving it an alert expression. The 2 coat is ticked. This cat can be trained to walk on leash. Abyssinians weigh 6 to 10 lbs. The American Bobtail (Bobtail) was recently (2006) accepted for championship status by the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA). The Bobtail is medium-large to large, highly intelligent, devoted and loving towards the whole family including dogs and other pets, has a wild cat and athletic appearance, a hunting gaze, muscular and is naturally bobtailed (naturally occurring short-tailed, 1 to 4 inches long). Also, it can be trained to play fetch and to be walked on leash. This cat is adaptable.
