In het kader van deze bijdrage behandelen wij de natuurnamen en de namen naar topografische kenmerken alleen voor zover zij aanleiding hebben gegeven tot nederzettingsnamen. Over hun gebruik in veldnamen, namen van grasland, enz. valt er heel wat meer te zeggen, maar dat valt buiten het bestek van deze bijdrage. 1. Natuurnamen. 1.1. Verhevenheid van de bodem. Het is bekend dat berg in het Nederlands taalgebied ook de geringste verhevenheid kan aanduiden (Gysseling 1978, 16). Dit wordt bevestigd door de vele -berg-namen in dorpsmonografieën ter aanduiding van erg variërende verhevenheden op diverse plaatsen in één en hetzelfde dorp. Berg komt in Haspengouw als simplex voor ter aanduiding van een nederzetting in Berg (bij Tongeren, onder Kleine Spouwen, onder Voeren). Nederzettingsnamen met -berg als grondwoord zijn Asberg (onder Tongeren), Blikkenberg (onder Hoeselt, Vliermaal, Werm: nederzettingsnaam?), Doesberg (onder Lanaken, Veldwezelt), Galgeberg>Gaverik (onder Bilzen), Heiberg>Heibrik (onder Hoeselt), Kaberg/Kauberg (onder Diepenbeek en Hoeselt), Keiberg (onder Halen, onder Vrijhern), Koekelsberg (onder Kleine Spouwen en Wellen; ‘een koekje’ wegens de ronde vorm), Loksbergen (onder Halen), Saffraanberg (onder Brustem), Scherpenberg (onder Broekem, Tongeren), Steenberg (onder Muizen-bij-Sint-Truiden en onder Sint-Lambrechts-Herk), Udenberg (onder Rosmeer), enz. All available biostratigraphic, and in some cases, magnetostratigraphic data are used to constrain the sequence chronostratigraphy. The relative geographic extent of the strata is used as an indication of the relative sea level. Tectonic and eustatic components could be distinguished in several cases using regional geological information. Generally, sequences consist of transgressive and highstand systems tracts only and have flat, abrasion- type lower boundaries. Lowstand deposits are only identified as infill of erosional space, which generally implies marked tectonic uplift. Several eustatic and tectonic events can be correlated with similar events known elsewhere in the North Sea Basin. The time intervals spanned by the different sequences vary considerably, pointing out different control mechanisms. Ed. 1994 A NEW LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC SCALE FOR THE PALAEOGENE OF BELGIUM by R. MARECHAL' ABSTRACT The study of the Belgian Tertiary started more than 150 years ago. Since that time such an enormous amount of data has been gathered, that the commission in charge of the revision of the stratigraphic scale of the Belgian Tertiary decided to limit its activity to the elaboration of a lithostratigraphic scale according to the rules of the IUGS International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Classification. The fundamental unit of such a classification system is the Formation and therefore much attention has been given to Formation names. Some of these names are in use since a very long time, others are new. Preference has been given to names of well known localities situated within the main outcrop areas of the Formation under consideration. Formations may be completely or partially subdivided into Members or may remain undivided. Member names have been selected according the same rules as Formation names. Since members are mostly homogeneous in lithology the Member name may be followed by a rock or sediment name (Vlierzele sand, Asse clay). Most formations have been assembled into Groups. Group names should be considered as tentative. It is questionable whether an internationally admitted chronostratigraphic name (Rupelian, Ypresian) may also be used as a Group name (Rupel, Ieper). The efforts of the National Commission for Stratigraphy of the Tertiary resulted in a proposal for a lithostratigraphic scale for the Palaeogene, which was distributed to a limited number of persons in 1988 and discussed consecutively.

The presence of Chattian deposits in Belgium was confirmed in the early 20th century by correlation of their mollusc faunas with the type Chattian in Germany. Consequently, the Voort Formation in the Campine Basin and the Boncelles Sand on the northeastern Ardennes were established and assigned a Chattian age. Contacts with underlying Rupelian and overlying Burdigalian formations are marked by hiatuses, linked mainly to end-Oligocene Savian tectonics and reactivation of the Roer Valley Graben (RVG). On the Campine Block, only the lower part of the Chattian, the Voort Sand is deposited, increasing in thickness in the direction of the RVG and including a geophysically traceable clayey marker horizon allowing the mapping of this unit in the Campine Basin, into the Netherlands and even possibly link it to the hydrostratigraphic subdivision of the Chattian in the Lower Rhine Graben. Lithologically, these uppermost Paleogene Chattian deposits form the base of the Neogene sequence along the Southern Bight of the North Sea, characterised by predominantly glauconite-bearing sand. The Chattian sediments rapidly become thicker in the strongly subsiding RVG, resulting in a more continuous sedimentation with the development above the Voort Sand of a clay unit and another sand unit, forming together the Veldhoven Formation.

    The Campine Plateau 12 Koen Beerten, Roland Dreesen, Jos Janssen and Dany Van Uytven Abstract Once occupied by shallow and wide braided channels of the Meuse and Rhine rivers around the Early to Middle Pleistocene transition, transporting and depositing debris from southern origin, the Campine Plateau became a positive relief as the combined result of uplift, the protective role of the sedimentary cover, and presumably also base level fluctuations. The escarpments bordering the Campine Plateau are tectonic or erosional in origin, showing characteristics of both a fault footwall in a graben system, a fluvial terrace, and a pediment. The intensive post-depositional evolution is attested by numerous traces of chemical and physical weathering during (warm) interglacials and glacials respectively. The unique interplay between tectonics, climate, and geomorphological processes led to the preservation of economically valuable natural resources, such as gravel, construction sand, and glass sand. Conversely, their extraction opened new windows onto the geological and geomorphological evolution of the Campine Plateau adding to the geoheritage potential of the first Belgian national park, the National Park Hoge Kempen. In this chapter, the origin and evolution of this particular landscape is explained and illustrated by several remarkable geomorphological highlights. The seismic data penetrate down to 900 m in the sedimentary cover or to the Paleozoic basement. The reflection response of the acoustic basement provides clear indications with regard to the top of the Paleozoic: crystalline basement and Lower Paleozoic metasediments and volcanics of the London- Brabant Massif and NE-dipping Devonian and Carboniferous strata. The subhorizontal Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary cover comprises 20 unconformity-bound seismic units: 5 in the Cretaceous and 15 in the Cenozoic. Based on borehole information, these units are correlated with lithostratigraphically defined formations or groups. Some of the unit-bounding unconformities are of regional importance. They are attributed i) to eustatic sea-level changes causing regional flooding during the Late Cretaceous or incision of deep valleys during the Late Oligocene and Late Miocene, ii) to regional tectonic tilting between Late Eocene and Early Oligocene, or iii) to a combination of eustasy and tectonics causing valley incisions during the Lutetian.
