The outstanding St. Lawrence String Quartet returns with a Houston premiere and masterpieces by Haydn and Beethoven. The new quartet by American master John Adams explores his musical roots in the classical repertoire and the life-changing experience he had as a teenager of attending performances by the Budapest and Juilliard Quartets. Reflecting deeply on his formative years, especially on the power of Beethoven's late works, Adams bases this new work on what he calls “fractals,” or small fragments, from Beethoven's last piano sonatas.

On the occasion of the Menil Collection's drawing exhibition, Picasso: The Line, pianist and Da Camera artistic director Sarah Rothenberg presents a program inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso. Picasso's genius is notable for its virtuosic diversity of styles and his work in multiple artistic media. His creativity extended also to theater and dance in collaborations with such composers as Igor Stravinsky, Manuel De Falla and Erik Satie. These landmark ballets produced by Diaghilev's legendary Ballet russes, with sets and costumes by Picasso, become the springboard for Sarah Rothenberg's exploration of parallel paths in music and art at the beginning of the 20th century.

Pianist Sarah Rothenberg's many activities as performer, writer and public speaker illuminate connections between visual art and music. She has appeared at The Guggenheim; The Jewish Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Menil on subjects ranging from Impressionist drawing to Mark Rothko. Da Camera's recording, Rothko Chapel: Feldman, Satie and Cage, has received international acclaim and was named one of the top ten classical CD's of 2015 by the Chicago Tribune.

Since top-tier jazz and multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard embarked on his solo recording career, the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings of original material and composing over 50 soundtracks. Now, Blanchard powerfully and playfully journeys into a new jazz realm with his quintet, The E-Collective — an exciting zone of grooved fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors. It’s a first foray into straight-up groove for Blanchard; come enjoy the dance-steeped party he and his quintet – guitarist Charles Altura, Fabian Almazan on piano and synthesizers, bassist Donald Ramsey, and drummer Oscar Seaton – have cooked up.

“A trumpeter of expressive urgency and a composer of expansive vision.” – The New York Times

“Terence Blanchard has always been forward thinking, but with E-Collective he shoots straight into Llyrˆ Williams, piano tomorrow…but it’s still the tough but Tuesday, April 4, 2017, 7:30 PM tender, timeless but vital unique tone The Menil Collection that marks Terence’s Schumann Papillons, Op. 2 horn as one of the truly Humoreske in B flat Major, Op. 20 great and classic Chopin Fantaisie in F Minor, Op. 49 jazzmen.”– DownBeat Rachmaninoff Selection of Preludes from Op. 23 and Op. 32

Welsh pianist Llˆyr Williams is a regular performer at London’s Wigmore Hall and recently made his debuts at The Gilmore International Keyboard Festival and the Ravinia Festival. On the cusp of a major international career, he has received rapturous acclaim from critics for his performances and recordings. In his Houston recital debut, Williams plays beloved masterworks of the Romantic repertoire by Schumann, Chopin and Rachmaninoff.

“Williams has that precious ability to shed new light on the most familiar music, and a nonchalant technical mastery and singing tone that transform the simplest of melodies into something exceptional.” – The Guardian “Profound musical intelligence, warm humanity and formidable technique.” – Seen and Heard International
