Overall strategy The World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) encourages countries to improve detection of COVID-19 transmission, to respond to detection with quick and targeted measures, and to focus efforts on preventing transmission among the vulnerable.

Key highlights ● New cases of COVID-19 were reported in 19 Western Pacific (WPR) countries or areas within the past seven days ( 42, Darussalam 1, Cambodia 3 707, 3 321, 81, French 25, 31, 32 834, of Korea 4 219, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) 191, 46 468, Mongolia 4 210, 1, 11, 7, 776, 34 295, 239 and Viet Nam 1 388). ● Five countries or areas in the WPR that had reported cases in the past have reported no new cases within the past seven days ( (189 days), (100 days), (46 days), (79 days) and (19 days)). ● Eleven Pacific Island countries and areas have not reported a case to date (, , , (Federated States of), , , , Islands, , and ). Weekly situation updates ● In the WPR, 24 countries and areas have reported COVID-19 cases since December 2019. Between 19 May and 25 May 2021, a total of 131 847 cases with 1 812 deaths were reported, for a cumulative 2 912 355 cases with 43 624 deaths (proportion of fatal cases (PFC) 1.5%) as of 26 May 2021, 17:00 (GMT+8). Available data indicate most countries or areas in the WPR have identified imported cases1 or localized community transmission, while subnational areas in some WPR countries and areas have identified large-scale community transmission. Figure 1 shows the geographical distribution of cases reported in the last seven days. o Countries and areas with large-scale community transmission: ▪ Japan (Aichi, Fukuoka, Hokkaido, Hyogo, Kyoto, Nara, Okinawa, Osaka and Tokyo), Malaysia (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, the Federal of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, Sarawak and Selangor), Mongolia (Ulaanbaatar), (Eastern New Britain, Madang, Manus, National Capital District and Western Highlands) and the Philippines (National Capital Region, Region III and Region IV-A). o Countries and areas with localized community transmission: ▪ Cambodia (Phnom Penh and Preah Sihanouk province), Guam, Japan (rest of the 34 prefectures), the Republic of Korea, Lao PDR (Vientiane capital), Malaysia (the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malacca, Pahang, Perlis, the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, Sabah, Terengganu), Papua New Guinea (rest of 17 provinces), the Philippines (rest of the 14 ) and Viet Nam (Hanoi capital, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Dien Bien, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City). Globally, 167 423 479 COVID-19 cases with 3 480 480 deaths have been reported in 223 countries or areas (2.1% PFC) as of 26 May 2021 10:39 CEST. Recent daily new cases in the South-East Region appear to be decreasing, but remain high. Data from the daily trends of the Eastern Mediterranean Region and European Region appear to be decreasing, while the trends of daily new cases in the Regions of the and the African Region appear to have plateaued.

New guidance ● On 19 May 2021, WHO Headquarters published Preventing and mitigating COVID-19 at work. This joint WHO and International Labour Organization policy brief provides a summary of the evidence for transmission of COVID-19 in workplaces outside of healthcare facilities and recommendations for prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 to protect health and safety at work.

Key information and announcements

Information and planning ● WHO WPRO is continuing to monitor incidence of COVID-19 and transmission levels within countries and areas across the Region. Updated information is available on the WPRO dashboard. ● WHO WPRO continues to work closely with WHO representative offices in Lao PDR, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the South Pacific to provide technical assistance for surveillance, analysis and response to the current outbreaks.

Strategic communication ● WHO Representative Office for the Philippines has prepared a video entitled: “I wear a mask because…”, where WHO colleagues share their thoughts on why they continue wearing mask during the COVID-19 pandemic. ● A few news releases have been published on WPRO website marking the newest deliveries of COVAX vaccines to the countries in the Region, including Vanuatu and Viet Nam.
