Migration Forms When entering a new country, you might be given a Migration form. Keep it with you until the end of your trip, as the Migrations Authority might require it. Trusted Traveler Programs Some travelers have found that Trusted Traveler programs can expedite long waits at customs when re entering the U.S. There are currently three programs available: Global Entry, NEXUS, and SENTRI. These three programs also include TSA Pre-Check, which allows you to use a dedicated security line at participating airports, or you can apply solely for TSA Pre-Check. TIP: Keep in mind that not all airports and airlines participate in these programs. You may want to consider checking with your airport prior to applying to find out if these programs would benefit you. To apply for a Trusted Traveler program or TSA Pre-Check, typically you will be asked to pay an application fee (varies by program) and schedule a background check and/or an interview. If you are approved, you will be issued a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Your KTN is valid for a set number of years, based on the conditions of the program. Please see the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for more details on each of these programs: www.cbp.gov/ travel/trusted-traveler-programs. You can also find more information about TSA Pre-Check at www.tsa.gov/precheck. If you are enrolled in TSA Pre-Check (or a Trusted Traveler program that includes it), you must provide your KTN to the airlines. Emergency Photocopies of Key Documents We recommend you carry color photocopies of key documents including the photo page of your passport plus any applicable visas, air itinerary, credit cards (front and back), and an alternative form of ID. Add emergency phone numbers like your credit card company and the number for your travel protection plan. Store copies separate from the originals. If you plan to email this information to yourself, please keep in mind that email is not always secure; consider using password protection or encryption. Also email is not always available worldwide. As an alternative, you could load these documents onto a flash drive instead, which can do double-duty as a place to backup photos during your trip. 4 RSA2017 07/14/2017 Overseas Taxes & Fees This tour may have taxes and fees that cannot be included in your airline ticket price because you are required to pay them in person onsite. All taxes are subject to change without notice and can be paid in cash (either U.S. or local currency). If applicable, you will receive a list of these fees with your Final Documents. 07/14/2017 RSA2017 5 HEALTH Keep Your Abilities In Mind Please review the information below prior to departing on this trip. (You can use the “Keep Your Abilities in Mind” on the previous page as a guideline to discuss with him or her.) • You may want to have a dental exam before your trip. Or there may be vaccinations that he or she recommends for you because of your personal medical history. We suggest you consult with your own physician at least 6 weeks prior to departure, and ask about vaccinations at that time. If you’d like to know more about possible vaccinations for this trip—or just about health in general while traveling—the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a great resource. You can contact them online or by phone. • Online: We suggest you visit the CDC’s website at http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel, where you will find comprehensive information about preventing illness while traveling. • By phone: At the CDC’s Hotline toll-free at 1-800-232-4636 24 hours a day. • ART DECO and BRAZILIAN MODERNISM a Dissertation
SLEEK WORDS: ART DECO AND BRAZILIAN MODERNISM A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy in Spanish By Patricia A. Soler, M.S. Washington, DC January 23, 2014 Copyright by Patricia A. Soler All rights reserved ii SLEEK WORDS: ART DECO AND BRAZILIAN MODERNISM Patricia A. Soler, M.S. Thesis advisor: Gwen Kirkpatrick, Ph.D. ABSTRACT I explore Art Deco in the Brazilian Modernist movement during the 1920s. Art Deco is a decorative arts style that rose to global prominence during this decade and its proponents adopted and adapted the style in order to nationalize it; in the case of Brazil, the style became nationalized primarily by means of the application of indigenous motifs. The Brazilian Modernists created their own manifestations of the style, particularly in illustration and graphic design. I make this analysis by utilizing primary source materials to demonstrate the style’s prominence in Brazilian Modernism and by exploring the handcrafted and mechanical techniques used to produce the movement’s printed texts. I explore the origins of the Art Deco style and the decorative arts field and determine the sources for the style, specifically avant-garde, primitivist, and erotic sources, to demonstrate the style’s elasticity. Its elasticity allowed it to be nationalized on a global scale during the 1920s; by the 1930s, however, many fascist-leaning forces co- opted the style for their own projects. I examine the architectural field in the Brazil during the 1920s.

Historical research, appropriately, focuses on "the what,” “the who," and "the when.” To many historians, "the where," the geographical component, is much less important, and, indeed, is sometimes overlooked. One of my students once reflected on the interplay of the two disciplines: “Historical geography, in contrast to history, focuses on locations before dates, places before personalities, distributions before events, and regions before eras.

  • Wild Adventures: Percy Fawcett and the Lost City of Z
Wild Adventures: Percy Fawcett and the Lost City of Z The Story of Percy Fawcett Percy Fawcett (born 1865) was an explorer from Torquay who disappeared (along with his son Jack and his son’s best friend Raleigh Rimell) in 1925 during an expedition to discover the Lost City of Z, in the jungles of Brazil, South America. Percy had heard from local tribes about the legend of an ancient city called Kuhikugu and found an old manuscript by a Portuguese explorer written in 1753. It described the ruins of a lost city that contained arches, a statue, and a temple with hieroglyphics, but no clues as to its exact location. After lots of research, Percy was determined to find what he called ‘The Lost City of Z’ but left strict instructions stating that if the expedition did not return, then no rescue expedition should be sent in case the rescuers suffered the same fate. Percy would have to be strong and brave if he were to complete this mission. He was venturing into unknown territory in the Amazon Rainforest, facing all kinds of unknown dangers; trekking hundreds of miles through difficult terrain (steep mountains; humid rainforest; wide, deep fast-flowing rivers; canyons); potentially hostile natives; and dangerous animals. Percy was an experienced traveller; he had explored much of Brazil and Bolivia, studied cartography (mapmaking) and was interested in wildlife and archaeology. The fearless threesome began their expedition from Cuiabá, Brazil on 20th April 1925. All we know since then is that Percy, Jack and Raleigh disappeared around May 1925, somewhere in in the Mato Grosso area of the Amazon rainforests, Brazil.

Lost City of Z (Questions) 1. What inspired Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett's obsessive search for Z... what evidence led him to believe the city was more than legend? 2. How does Grann portray Fawcett? What kind of a man was he? Would you describe him as a victim of his own obsession...as a romantic...a fool bent on his own destruction...a rational man of science...? 3. What are some of the legends that have surrounded Fawcett himself? To what do you attribute his place in popular culture over the years—and what does it say, both about Fawcett and ourselves, that he has maintained a hold on our collective imagination? 4. How did Fawcett differ from his rival, Alexander Hamilton Rice—especially in the approach to exploration? Were the two men evenly matched in skill and technology...or not? In what way did Rice, perhaps, represent the future of modern exploration? 5. What draws David Grann into the search for Fawcett—what initially sparks the author's fascination? Consider Grann's own difficulty in the Amazon, especially for a man who delights in air conditioning and fast food. Finally, what new information does Grann contribute to solving the mystery surrounding Fawcett's disappearance? 6. Where does Grann stand with regard to the existence of Z? What conclusions does he reach? Where do you stand? 7. What are some of the more surprising, even shocking, accounts of jungle exploration you found in this work? 8. Does this book remind you of other stories of those obsessed with adventure or other cultures: The Man Who Loved China...or Bill Bryson's misguided but humorous adventure on the Appalachian Trail? Any resemblance to fictional works ..
