This article is an open access publication Abstract This article discusses how the Virgilian intertexts of the stag hunt in the 1642 edition of Coopers Hill support the interpretation of the passage as a com- mentary on the trial and execution of the Earl of Strafford, and how they allow Denham to criticize Charles I’s involvement in Strafford’s death. Despite this criticism, other texts, including Denham’s revised (1653/5) edition of the poem, subsequently adapted the stag-hunt episode to commemorate Charles’s own trial and execution. The false presentation of the 1653/5 Coopers Hill as an edition that prints an original, authentic version of the poem from 1640 draws on the Virgilian technique of retrospective prophecy to make its status as a commentary on Charles’s execution more explicit. Denham repeated this technique in The Destruction of Troy (1656), which heavily revised an excerpt from his 1630s manuscript translation of Aeneid II–VI, and asserts the composition date of this earlier version in order to ‘foretell’ Charles’s execution. Analysing these Virgilian post eventum prophecies shows how both texts simultaneously censure and mourn Charles I, and also identifies increasingly self-recriminatory elements to Denham’s own royalism. Introduction John Denham’s two most significant literary projects, Coopers Hill and his translations from Virgil, exist in multiple manuscript and published versions that he & Ian Calvert [email protected] 1 Department of English, University of Bristol, 3/5 Woodland Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 1TB, UK 123 I. Calvert revised periodically throughout his career.1 They both helped to popularize an aesthetic Augustanism: the attempt ‘to find an equivalent in English of those ideal properties of style’ that writers in the early modern period found in Virgil’s versification and clarity of expression, hence Robert Herrick’s account of Denham’s ‘brave, bold, and sweet Maronian [Virgilian] Muse’ in his commendatory poem on Coopers Hill and John Dryden’s claim that Denham’s poetry provided ‘the exact Standard of good Writing’.2 Each project has also been placed at the head of respective literary traditions that became highly influential during the long eighteenth century.3 These were topographical poetry in the case of Coopers Hill and, with regard to his Virgil, a mode of translation that abandoned ‘that servile path’ of ‘tracing word by word, and line by line’ in favour of representing the animating spirit of the text.4 Coopers Hill and Denham’s first published Virgil translation, The Destruction of Troy (1656, but deriving from the manuscript rendering of Aeneid II–VI that Denham produced in the 1630s),5 have, in addition, attracted considerable attention for the commentary they offer on contemporary politics. The translation is thus thought to date from the 1630s, but it may not have been copied into Hutchinson’s commonplace book until the early 1650s. 123 Hindsight as Foresight: Virgilian Retrospective Prophecy in… Denham’s political sympathies remains a contentious issue, but it is generally agreed that his poetry signals a loyalty to the royalist cause in a manner which allows censure as well as support of Charles I.6 The call for moderation and balance in Coopers Hill, particularly in the ‘Thames couplets’ ‘B’ Text, can be readily applied to a political standpoint, with the result that Denham’s politics are often aligned with his aesthetic principles.7 Whilst such links did undoubtedly exist, they were not necessarily inextricable or simultaneous. Within the context of Denham’s poetry, it is helpful to consider, in addition to an aesthetic Augustanism that emulates a Virgilian versification, a related but distinct political Augustanism motivated by a desire to emulate Virgil’s presentation of heads of state. Here, too, there is no consensus on this topic, but for the present purposes it is important to register that Virgil’s portrayal of such individuals, like Denham’s portrayal of Charles, frequently involves criticism as well as praise.8 In this article I examine Denham’s political and aesthetic Augustanism to outline the extensive cross-fertilization between Coopers Hill and his engagement with Virgil. Critics have already established points of contact between Coopers Hill and the Georgics, but here I focus on the Aeneid to suggest that Denham thought of his topographical poem within an epic, as well as georgic, framework.9 The most useful point of entry to discuss these issues is the passage in the Coopers Hill ‘A’ Text where ‘our Charles’ gives chase to and kills ‘the royall Stagge’.10 This passage concludes with an account of how the stag: tries his friends, amongst the lesser Heard, Where he but lately was obey’d, and feard, Safety he seekes, the heard unkindly wise, 6 Connections between Denham’s poetry and his politics are discussed in EH, pp. 165–256; J. Not that, from our more distant vantage-point at least, the literary advantage lay with the larger faction. When the lines were drawn the Parliamentarians could muster Milton, Marvell, the young Dryden, and, proximum longo intervalloj the elderly George Wither, who had done his best work in the reign of James L Edmund Waller occupied an unenviable position between the two camps; while Cowley, Denham, Fanshawe, Lovelace, Quarks, and Suckling, along with the dramatists Davenant, the two Killigrews and Shirley, are the most notable of those who either served Charles I or his successor in exile or suffered directly on their behalf. Among the latter party John Denham (fig. i) occupied in political terms a moderately distinguished place, acting as agent at home and as envoy abroad to both Charles Stuarts in turn. As a poet he is chiefly remembered as the author of Cooper^s Hill^ the first great topographical poem in the language, and he is sometimes said to be the one who did most to promote the transition of English verse from the Metaphysical to the Augustan mode. The purpose of the present rather disjointed notes is to supplement the very different but equally indispensable accounts given by his earliest biographer, John Aubrey,^ and his latest, Brendan O'Hehir,^ with some letters and documents that have recently come to light, more especially relating to his life in exile on the Continent between September 1648 and March 1653.

ANSELMENT* When smallpox claimed the only son of the sixth Earl of Huntingdon on 24 June 1649, the death of Henry, Lord Hastings was commemorated in a fashionable volume of elegies. Among the contributions to Lachrymae musarum by "diverse persons of Nobility and Worth", Andrew Marvell's tribute to the young Huntingdon heir is certainly the most intriguing and those ofJohn Denham and Robert Herrick rank with the most polished, but none has gained the notoriety of the poem written by John Dryden. This studied, uneven imitation of classical and metaphysical elegy has often been singled out for its infamous description of the fatal disease: Blisters with pride swell'd; which th'row 's flesh did sprout Like Rose-buds, stuck i' th' Lily-skin about. Each little Pimple had a Tear in it, To wail the fault its rising did commit: Who, Rebel-like, with their own Lord at strife, Thus made an Insurrection 'gainst his Life.' Despite attempts to dismiss the "gross", "forced and far-sought conceits" as the unpropitious performance of a fledgling, eighteen-year-old poet or to justify their wit as rhetorically appropriate figures of speech,2 the lines remain an affront to most sensibilities. The passage, nevertheless, should not be dismissed as simply an aberration of seventeenth-century wit or a juvenile lapse in good taste. Though the poem appears flawed, particularly in comparison with Dryden's later accomplishments, the failure ofthis occasional poem provides the occasion for a better understanding of both the medical and the literary history of smallpox in the seventeenth century.

He was born in Dublin, in the year 1615; but was brought over from thence very young, on his father's being made one of the barons of the Exchequer in England 1617. He received his education, in grammar learning, in London; and in Michaelmas term 1631 he was entered a gentleman commoner in Trinity College, Oxford, being then 16 years of age; where, as Wood expresses it, 'being looked upon as a slow dreaming young man, and more addicted to gaming than study, they could never imagine he could ever enrich the world with the issue of his brain, as he afterwards did.' He remained three years at the university, and having been examined at the public schools, for the degree of bachelor of arts, he entered himself in Lincoln's-Inn, where he was generally thought to apply himself pretty closely to the study of the common law. But notwithstanding his application to study, and all the efforts he was capable of making, such was his propensity to gaining, that he was often stript of all his money; and his father severely chiding him, and threatening to abandon him if he did not reform, he wrote a little essay against that vice, and presented it to his father, to convince him of his resolution against it.

For an author there is substance in the self-criticism which the man who had lived in Beaulieu for 53 years expressed to William Allingham in 1866, that he "ought to a' pushed out into the world—gone to London or some large place ".

    The Classical Movement(1660 to 1750): It is known by various titles which are as follows: 1. The Classical Movement with reference to the standards it preached 2. The Augustan age; it resembled that of the Emperor Augustus in the splendor of its literature. Dr. Johnson compared Dryden’s work for English Letters and Augustus’s efforts for the upliftment of Rome “found bricks and left marble”. 3. The age of Reason and Good Sense 4. Restoration Age, Charles II was restored to the throne(1660). His father Charles two was beheaded in 1649; he was against parliament of England, polices were against the common people, levied taxes without parliamentary consent, believed in divine rights of kings, married a roman catholic, antagonist to protestants and puritans, tyrannical monarch, was defeated in the English civil war and surrendered to Scottish Parliament and English army. I focus on the ways in which the literary imagination was used to develop a “flexible social identity” that could accommodate the continual disruption of social, institutional, and economic relationships in the decades surrounding the English Civil War. By revising a scholarly tradition that views the period and its literature in strict partisan terms, this study recovers the importance of the imaginative as a tool for early modern authors to maintain sociability against the demands of ideological divisiveness. iii For Jane iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project is as much a product of relationships as it is of resources.
