J! 3 ד"סב Avrohom Adler International Director, Yachad We are approaching the awesome holiday of Shavuous. There are so many amazing aspects to this holiday, and many customs. We read the story of Ruth which ends with the Ruth’s great grandson David who goes on to become the King. It is from King David that the ultimate Moshiach will come from, may it be speedily in our days. Many people have the custom to stay up all night learning Torah, eat dairy meals, and buy plants and trees for their homes and synagogues, all of this for a 2-day holiday. One of things that sets the Jewish people apart is the Torah. Hashem chose the Jewish people to give His Torah to. Shavuous is called “Zman Matan Toraseinu” the time of the giving of the Torah. On Shavuous we celebrate being given the Torah and the uniqueness of our relationship with Hashem. The Torah is our guide, it gives us direction. The Torah teaches us how to act and interact with each other and the Torah teaches us how to interact with Hashem through His Mitzvos. So why is the holiday called Chag Shavuous and not Chag Torah? There are many reasons given, but there is one in particular that speaks to me especially during this time.

If judgment is not performed below, it will have to be performed above'." On its simplest level, this midrash is informing us of the importance of setting up courts. If mankind judges and punishes wrongdoers and protects victims and the oppressed, G-d will not have to do so.     Vayakhel Pekudei Vayakhel Pekudei, 29 Adar 5781 The Great People Who Could Rav Daniel Mann Throughout our many lands of dispersion, many Jews excelled as fine craftsmen, as we have learned through history books, stories, and family names (whether it be Goldsmith, Cooperman, or Chait). It would have been wise for the Egyptians, with access to free Jewish labor, to have developed some of our forefathers into fine craftsmen who could have contributed to society. This would have come in handy for us, when we were on our own, especially when we had the opportunity/necessity to build the Mishkan. It would have been min hashamayim (based on a fortuitous divine plan) to have used skills learned in Egypt to further our own national goals. Yet, I am unaware of statements of Chazal and the commentators that speak of the artisans of the Mishkan having such training, and the p’sukim imply the opposite. The p’sukim speak of Betzalel and Ohaliav and “all of the men with a wise heart” as those who “Hashem gave wisdom to know how to do the work of the holy tasks” (Shemot 36:1). Chazal do speak about special qualities of Betzalel, who knew for example how to “connect the letters with which the heavens and earth were created” and that he had been in “the shadow of Hashem” (Berachot 55a). Indeed, Betzalel and Ohaliav were “called by name” by Hashem as those chosen to lead the lay efforts of the building of the Mishkan (Shemot 35:30). Regarding their staffs, not only were the people not listed in the Torah by name, but the p’sukim indicate that they were not appointed by Hashem.

(Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach; Sefer Bereishis 7:1) Parshas Terumah Kedushas Ha'Levi'im THE MISHKAN AND MAN: MICROCOSMS OF THE UNIVERSE In the rings of the Ark the staves shall remain; they may not be removed from it. You shall place in the Ark the testimonial tablets that I will give you... (Shemos 25:15–16) The holy Berditchever asked in Kedushas Levi: Why is there an extra warning against removing the staves from the Ark, unlike any other precaution regarding the holy vessels? To make the answer to this question clear, the Berditchever tells us that he must give a bit of a lengthy explanation. He says that it is well known that man is called an “olam katan,” a small world, and that he is a microcosm of the universe, and that his 248 limbs correspond spiritually to the 248 positive commandments, and that his 365 sinews correspond spiritually to the 365 negative commandments. Similarly, explains the Berditchever, the Mishkan and all of its vessels correspond to the spiritual forces behind the mitzvos, each vessel alluding to a different mitzvah. [For example: The Zohar II 152b-153b teaches that the Shulchan corresponds to the mitzvah of Birkas haMazon, just as the shulchan draws down blessings and sustenance to the whole world so does the grace after meals which we recite.] The Kedushas Levi reminds us that there are several mitzvos that man is obligated to always have in mind and remember constantly, at every moment.

The entire Torah and Gemara are full of such teachings. The Gemara instructs us regarding honor, love, and awe of Torah scholars.
