  • Old Ford Voices and Island Memories
NEWSLETTER OF TOWER HAMLETS LOCAL HISTORY LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES LH&A NEWS J U L Y 2 0 1 2 N U M B E R 1 8 Old Ford Voices and Island Memories Our latest exhibition showcases the memories of local residents of the area of Bow known as Old Ford, including the Island (now known as Fish Island), located in the north-eastern corner of Tower Hamlets. Voices from this community were recorded in oral history interviews commissioned by the library last year and portrait photographs taken of the interviewees, all of whom have a strong connection to the area. These oral histories were collected as part of a bigger project organised by Hackney Museum entitled ‘Mapping the Change’, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. ‘Mapping The Change’ aims to engage people in the heritage of neighbourhoods affected by redevelopment brought about by the 2012 Olympics. Oral histories have also been collected in Hackney Wick, Homerton and Dalston and have been exhibited at Hackney Museum. In Old Ford, nearly twenty residents and workers shared their memories of growing up, work, play and family life during the twentieth century. This exhibition, based on their testimonies, provides a valuable and intimate look into the personal histories of Old Ford and the Island. The last day of this free exhibition is Thursday 6 September after which the library will be closed temporarily for building works. Please check visiting times on www.ideastore.co.uk or the last page of this newsletter. Simeera Hassan, heritage skills trainee As reported in last month’s newsletter, our new CARIBBEAN Opening up Archives trainee is Simeera FAMILY HISTORY Hassan who has joined us on a year-long paid DAY placement as part of a scheme managed by The National Archives and supported by the SATURDAY 21 Heritage Lottery Fund.

  • The Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally The Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000-square-foot (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m).[1] The invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building and astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights. It has been suggested that the name of the building resulted from a The Crystal Palace at Sydenham (1854) piece penned by the playwright Douglas Jerrold, who in July 1850 General information wrote in the satirical magazine Punch about the forthcoming Great Status Destroyed Exhibition, referring to a "palace of very crystal".[2] Type Exhibition palace After the exhibition, it was decided to relocate the Palace to an area of Architectural style Victorian South London known as Penge Common. It was rebuilt at the top of Town or city London Penge Peak next to Sydenham Hill, an affluent suburb of large villas. It stood there from 1854 until its destruction by fire in 1936. The nearby Country United Kingdom residential area was renamed Crystal Palace after the famous landmark Coordinates 51.4226°N 0.0756°W including the park that surrounds the site, home of the Crystal Palace Destroyed 30 November 1936 National Sports Centre, which had previously been a football stadium Cost £2 million that hosted the FA Cup Final between 1895 and 1914.

  • FOI 9311 Parks in LB Tower Hamlets and List of Parks by Size Since 1938
FOI 9311 Parks created since 1938 Could you please supply a list of all open spaces created from January 1938 to December 2012. Please supply the area of each new open space when created History of parks and open spaces in Tower Hamlets, and their heritage significance The History of Parks and Open Space in Tower Hamlets The parks and open spaces of Tower Hamlets have come about through a variety of processes. Some public open spaces were the result of deliberate design or policy, while others are the result of historic accident or expedience. There were broadly three periods during which public open space was created in Tower Hamlets. These moves were primarily to benefit people, rather than improve land or rental values. The first was the deliberate creation of Victoria Park in the mid 19 th century, the late 19 th century saw the conversion of churchyards to public gardens and the most recent was in the mid 20 th century after World War 2. Various open spaces are the result of late 18 th and 19 th century urban design, being planned formal gardens set in London Squares. As such they are protected by the London Squares Preservation Act, 1931. These sites include Trinity Square Gardens , Arbour Square , Albert Gardens and the little known Oval in Bethnal Green. See full list of protected London Squares below. Many churchyards, particularly in the west of borough became public open spaces managed by the local authority. Having been closed to further burial use because they were overflowing, they were converted in the second half of the 19 th century into public gardens.
