Much of the focus has been on the neuronal and hormonal relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain. There is now mounting evidence that the colonic microbiota and their metabolic activity have a significant role in energy homeostasis. The supply of substrate to the colonic microbiota has a major impact on the microbial population and the metabolites they produce, particularly short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are produced when non-digestible carbohydrates, namely dietary fibres and resistant starch, undergo fermentation by the colonic microbiota. Both the consumption of fermentable carbohydrates and the administration of SCFAs have been reported to result in a wide range of health benefits including improvements in body composition, glucose homeostasis, blood lipid profiles and reduced body weight and colon cancer risk. However, published studies tend to report the effects that fermentable carbohydrates and SCFAs have on specific tissues and metabolic processes, and fail to explain how these local effects translate into systemic effects and the mitigation of disease risk. Moreover, studies tend to investigate SCFAs collectively and neglect to report the effects associated with individual SCFAs. Here, we bring together the recent evidence and suggest an overarching model for the effects of SCFAs on one of their beneficial aspects: appetite regulation and energy homeostasis.

Ltd., Tokyo, Japan 2Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba, Japan The clinical efficacy of fish oil and high-purity eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester (hp-EPA-E) for treat- ing cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported. Fish oil contains saturated and monounsatu- rated fatty acids that have pharmacological effects opposite to those of ω3 fatty acids (ω3). Moreover, ω3, such as EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), do not necessarily have the same metabolic and biological actions. This has obscured the clinical efficacy of ω3. Recently, the Japan EPA Lipid Inter- vention Study (JELIS) of hp-EPA-E established the clinical efficacy of EPA for CVD, and higher lev- els of blood EPA, not DHA, were found to be associated with a lower incidence of major coronary events. A significant reduction in the risk of coronary events was observed when the ratio of EPA to arachidonic acid (AA) (EPA/AA) was >0.75. Furthermore, the ratio of prostaglandin (PG) I3 and PGI2 to thromboxane A2 (TXA2) ([PGI2+PGI3]/TXA2) was determined to have a linear relationship with the EPA/AA ratio as follows: (PGI2+PGI3)/TXA2 =λ+π* (EPA/AA). Like PGI2, PGI3 not only inhib- its platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction, but also is assumed to reduce cardiac ischemic injury and arteriosclerosis and promote angiogenesis.

    OLEOCHEMICALS FATTY ACIDS This section will concentrate on Fatty Acids produced from natural fats and oils (i.e. not those derived from petroleum products). Firstly though, we will recap briefly on Nomenclature. We spent some time clarifying the structure of oleochemicals and we saw how carbon atoms link together to form carbon chains of varying length (usually even numbered in nature, although animal fats from ruminant animals can have odd-numbered chains). A fatty acid has at least one carboxyl group (a carbon attached to two oxygens (-O) and a hydrogen (-H), usually represented as -COOH in shorthand) appended to the carbon chain (the last carbon in the chain being the one that the oxygen and hydrogen inhabit). We will only be talking about chains with one carboxyl group attached (generally called “monocarboxylic acids”). The acids can be named in many ways, which can be confusing, so we will try and keep it as simple as possible. The table opposite shows the acid designations as either the “length of the carbon chain” or the “common name”. While it is interesting to know the common name for a particular acid, we will try to use the chainlength in any discussion so you do not have to translate. Finally, it is usual to speak about unsaturated acids using their chainlength suffixed with an indication of the number of double bonds present. Thus, C16=1 is the C16 acid with one double bond; C18=2 is the C18 acid with two double bonds and so on. SELECTING RAW MATERIALS FOR FATTY ACID PRODUCTION In principle, fatty acids can be produced from any oil or fat by hydrolytic or lipolytic splitting (reaction with water using high pressure and temperature or enzymes).
