New Campus Progresses Vol. 36 | Summer 2021 4 Connect the Dots 7 Stephen A. Ralph Joins Board 8 It’s All About Love New Campus Progresses Construction is underway at Doheny Eye Institute’s new campus, located at 150 North Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena, California. In late July of 2020, an excavator turned the first earth on the project, which will accomplish a complete transformation of the campus to meet the Institute’s range of complex eye research needs. When fully com- pleted, this seven-acre site will be home to Doheny’s vision research center and administrative offices, as well as Doheny Eye Center UCLA clinical spaces, and operating suites. Bringing the institute’s exceptional team of doctors, researchers, and staff together in this 115,000-square foot space will make possible the unique synergies achieved when ideas and innovations can be exchanged under one roof. Additionally, to broaden the reach of Doheny’s edu- cation programs, an on-site multi-media conference center will allow the hosting of meetings, seminars, symposia, etc., both in-person and virtually, for vision researchers and doctors from the region or across the globe. In describing the enthusiasm of the entire organization, Marissa Goldberg, Doheny’s Chief Executive Officer, stated, “The new campus will be contemporary, welcoming (continued on page 2) doheny.org 342626_Newsletter.r1.indd 1 8/2/21 3:34 PM InSight Summer 2021 | doheny.org (continued from page 1) DEAR FRIENDS and fresh. This is the first report on our new fiscal year reporting period, which began on April 1, 2004, and ended on March 31, 2005. The year was marked by the extraordinary single-event tragedy of the Asian tsunami, which killed and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and the slow-motion and less visible human tragedies that occur every day in developing countries. These events called upon our organization to focus more intensely than ever to help people facing tremendous challenges to meet basic health needs. Our longstanding focus on efficiency is rooted in the simple desire to help as many people as possible with whatever resources are entrusted to us.

  • Foxe's Book of Martyrs
FOXE'S BOOK OF MARTYRS CHAPTER I - History of Christian Martyrs to the First General Persecutions Under Nero Christ our Savior, in the Gospel of St. Matthew, hearing the confession of Simon Peter, who, first of all other, openly acknowledged Him to be the Son of God, and perceiving the secret hand of His Father therein, called him (alluding to his name) a rock, upon which rock He would build His Church so strong that the gates of hell should not prevail against it. In which words three things are to be noted: First, that Christ will have a Church in this world. Secondly, that the same Church should mightily be impugned, not only by the world, but also by the uttermost strength and powers of all hell. And, thirdly, that the same Church, notwithstanding the uttermost of the devil and all his malice, should continue. Which prophecy of Christ we see wonderfully to be verified, insomuch that the whole course of the Church to this day may seem nothing else but a verifying of the said prophecy. First, that Christ hath set up a Church, needeth no declaration. Secondly, what force of princes, kings, monarchs, governors, and rulers of this world, with their subjects, publicly and privately, with all their strength and cunning, have bent themselves against this Church! And, thirdly, how the said Church, all this notwithstanding, hath yet endured and holden its own! What storms and tempests it hath overpast, wondrous it is to behold: for the more evident declaration whereof, I have addressed this present history, to the end, first, that the wonderful works of God in His Church might appear to His glory; also that, the continuance and proceedings of the Church, from time to time, being set forth, more knowledge and experience may redound thereby, to the profit of the reader and edification of Christian faith.

  • The Dover Road
THE DOVER ROAD BY CHARLES G. HARPER The Dover Road I Of all the historic highways of England, the story of the old Road to Dover is the most difficult to tell. No other road in all Christendom (or Pagandom either, for that matter) has so long and continuous a history, nor one so crowded in every age with incident and associations. The writer, therefore, who has the telling of that story to accomplish is weighted with a heavy sense of responsibility, and though (like a village boy marching fearfully through a midnight churchyard) he whistles to keep his courage warm, yet, for all his outward show of indifference, he keeps an awed glance upon the shadows that beset his path, and is prepared to take to his heels at any moment. And see what portentous shadows crowd the long reaches of the Dover Road, and demand attention! Cæsar’s presence haunts the weird plateau of Barham Downs, and the alert imagination hears the tramp of the legionaries along Watling Street on moonlit nights. Shades of Britons, Saxons, Danes, and Normans people the streets of the old towns through which the highway takes its course, or crowd in warlike array upon the hillsides. Kings and queens, nobles, saints of different degrees of sanctity, great blackguards of every degree of blackguardism, and ecclesiastics holy, haughty, proud, or pitiful, rise up before one and terrify with thoughts of the space the record of their doings would occupy; in fine, the wraiths and phantoms of nigh upon two thousand years combine to intimidate the historian.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults. Unrelated to diet or lifestyle, T1D causes lifelong dependence on injected or pumped insulin and carries the constant danger of life-threatening complications. It requires intensive, 24/7 management. There are no days off, and there is no cure. Parents founded JDRF in 1970 to help their children with T1D by funding research to find a cure for this poorly understood and often deadly disease. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF has grown to become the largest nongovernmental funder of T1D research. JDRF has awarded more than $1.7 billion to diabetes research since our founding. Our goal is simple: we want to create a world without T1D. JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic plan to bring a continuous stream of life-changing therapies, and ultimately, a cure for T1D. 2 Please visit jdrf.org/2012annualreport to view the entire Annual Report online. It argues that antinomians, by rejecting traditional concepts of social authority, created divisive political factions within the godly party while it waged war against King Charles I. At the same time in New England, antinomians organized a political movement that called for a democratic commonwealth to limit the power of ministers and magistrates in religious and civil affairs. When this program collapsed in Massachusetts, hundreds of colonists returned to an Old England engulfed by civil war. Joining English antinomians, they became lay preachers in London, New Model Army soldiers, and influential supporters of the republican Levellers. This dissertation also connects the study of republican political thought to the labor history of the first British Empire.
