Donor Contributions 15 Grant Bridge, Our mission is to make a difference by identifying the Portsmouth community’s health and wellness needs while bridging the gap between those needs and the cost of the solutions.

The SOMC Development Foundation encompasses fundraising efforts for the Hospice Caritas Fund, Cancer Compassion Fund, Breast Cancer Compassion Fund, Employee Relief Fund, Heart & Vascular Fund, Pediatric Fund, Community Health and Wellness Fund, SOMC Endowment Fund, Jim and Clara Donaldson Scholarship Fund, Juvenile Diabetes Fund and the Annual Fund which covers the areas of greatest need. These funds generate much needed support and enable SOMC to continually deliver extraordinary care for future generations.

We’re here to make a difference in our community. Our goal is to help provide much needed resources that will help sustain the health care needs of our community members. We engage in fundraising efforts to help support initiatives throughout SOMC and our community. This support ranges from the purchase of new equipment & technology to upgrading facilities as well as other community projects that address our community’s health and wellness needs. Support and funds raised by the Development Foundation enable SOMC to respond to challenges and new opportunities as they arise.

6 SOMC Guild Contributions The guilds at Southern Ohio Medical Center share a common goal – to support the needs of the patients, as well as the hospital’s beneficial programs through fundraising efforts. They achieved their goal in FY 2017, raising $95,209.25 as part of their effort to advance the mission of SOMC. The women and men of SOMC’s guilds are truly extraordinary individuals and make such a difference for the patients, families and staff of Southern Ohio Medical Center.

This year, the support of the Guilds allowed SOMC to purchase items, such as heart care equipment for both patient care and staff needs, breast pumps for Maternity and donations toward the SOMC Cancer Compassion Fund, Pediatric Nursery and SOMC Hospice Center. SOMC is supported by a total of six guilds: the Hope Guild, the Kardia Guild, the Pleasure Guild, the Scioto Guild, the Service Guild and the Pediatric Guild.

7 SOMC Employee Giving SOMC employees are given the opportunity to utilize payroll deduction to give a percentage of their paycheck to a designated local charity and to the SOMC Development Foundation. In FY 2017, 1,098 employees gave $142,043.78 in total.

Friends Community Center

In August of 2017 we welcomed our new Friends Center Coordinator, Kelli Richardson. The Friends Community Center is an 8,600 square foot facility with a stage and state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment installed in each of three connecting rooms. The emphasis of the Friends Center is on fundraising events for the purpose of purchasing patient care equipment for SOMC, community education and health programs, and meeting/banquet facilities for community use. friends center The Friends Center gave in-kind contributions to the following community organizations in FY 2017:

9 FY 2017 SOMC Development Foundation Headlines

Transcending Lives: A $3 Million Campaign

The SOMC Transcending Lives capital campaign launched in August FY 2017 with the Development Foundation’s first Summer Soirée. The intent of the three-year campaign is to raise $3 million to expand and renovate the current facility. Plans are to add four new patient rooms, another large common gathering area, a meditation room, new restrooms, upgrade the kitchen and support areas, as well as renovate the existing patient rooms. In addition to Summer Soirée, proceeds from the Winter Wonderland ball in November FY 2017 were also dedicated to the Transcending Lives campaign. With just a little over a year into the campaign, 25 of 32 naming opportunities have already been dedicated. Through generous donations from our community residents, businesses, organizations and SOMC’s own employees, $1,713,195 have been raised for the campaign to date.

10 The SOMC Development Foundation hosted their first Summer Soirée where some 300 guests gathered for an upscale summer night in Lucasville to celebrate the beginning of the Transcending Lives Campaign, the hospice expansion project. As guests enjoyed spectacular views of the southern Ohio hills, the sun set on what was to be a fabulous evening of summer fun for a great cause. The surf and turf menu was served by the Scioto Ribber, while Dr. Mike Raies and Bad Habits entertained the guests. Several prize packages were raffled, including a spa package, a weekend in Cincinnati, and a trip to New York City. The evening was highlighted by a toast and dove balloon release commemorating past and current hospice patients and their families.

Meet the new Hospice dog Ray!

SOMC Hospice has welcomed a new member to their team: Ray, a three-year-old goldendoodle! Ray will be taking the place of Marley, who is now enjoying a much deserved retirement. Ray knows more than 30 commands and, when arriving to work, can even open the doors by himself! Ray has a work schedule from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and goes home in the evening with a nurse manager to relax. You can find Ray at the entrance of Hospice providing comfort and affection for our patients and their families. The Community Relations and Development team had the opportunity to visit with Ray on his first day and were able to get some great pictures!

11 FY 2017 Memorial Ride

On July 30th, the annual SOMC Hospice Memorial Ride took place to raise money for the Hospice Caritas Fund. The 90 mile-long ride was created in memory of motorcycle enthusiast and former hospice patient, Ricky Bryan. This year’s event brought in more than 300 participants on 200 motorcycles and raised $39,750. The money raised for the Caritas Fund ensures that local patients and families coping with a life-limiting illness receive comfort, support and care.

Paint it Pink

Southern Ohio Medical Center kicked off its annual “Paint It Pink” celebration in October, working to raise breast cancer awareness through a variety of events. In addition to raising awareness, SOMC also raised valuable funds for the Cancer Compassion Fund, which assists local cancer patients with transportation, medication, wigs and more. Employees and community members were then encouraged to wear the shirts on October 14. On October 15, SOMC had a Paint It Pink 5K and Celebrity Softball Game, which brought out crowds of participants and spectators alike.

The Guilds Raise $62,357.68

During their second quarter of the fiscal year, the Guilds succeeded in raising $62,357.68; $40,000 of which was donated to the Transcending Lives Campaign. The Guilds are comprised of the Scioto, Kardia, Service, Pleasure, and Hope Guild.

12 Sierra’s Haven: Petsmart donate toys to SOMC Hospice

Sierra’s Haven donated approximately 50 plush toy dogs and cats, purchased by local Petsmart customers, to SOMC Hospice. The gifts will be distributed to patients and family members by hospice staff.

Southern Ohio Medical Center kicked off the holiday season through its annual Winter Wonderland Ball, which took place Nov. 18 at the SOMC Friends Community Center. Guests enjoyed a festive winter dinner catered by Scioto Ribber while enjoying the Gary Billups Jazz Band. After dinner, guests lined the stage for the highly anticipated gift wall. Gifts such as a trip to Washington D.C., Ray-Ban sunglasses, and Beats by Dre were all donated to the wall. The beautiful black-tie event was the beginning of the hospital’s monthlong fundraising festivities, which also included the Winter Wonderland Train Show and Polar Express Pajama Party. This year’s events raised funds for the SOMC Transcending Lives campaign, the proceeds of which will benefit the SOMC Hospice Center—helping to add four new patient rooms, a large common gathering area, meditation space, new restroom facilities, as well as an upgraded kitchen, patient rooms, and support areas to assist staff as they provide excellent care for our patients. Thank you to all of the generous sponsors, donors, and volunteers who made Winter Wonderland possible!

13 Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

During the month of February, SOMC sold T-shirts in support of Heart Awareness Month as well as the Heart & Vascular Fund. In correlation with these shirts, the Development Foundation promoted a program called “Cold Hands, Warm Hearts,” and collected 2,500 pairs of children’s gloves. The gloves were donated to children in need at Stanton Primary (New Boston), Oak Intermediate (New Boston), Portsmouth Elementary School (Portsmouth) and South Webster Elementary School.

Pamper Your Heart Love Your Heart Grant Southern Ohio Medical Center promoted of $10,000 positive heart health on February 25th with SOMC’s Development Foundation “Pamper Your Heart.” The event provided received a $10,000 grant from the a relaxing and fun ladies night out with Marting Foundation for the Love Your wine, hor d’oeuvres, and local vendors. Hike for Hospice

SOMC experienced another outpouring of community support for its annual event, Hike for Hospice. The hike, which is the largest fundraiser of the year for the SOMC Hospice Caritas Fund, brought in more than $70,000. The event also serves as an opportunity for community members to honor their own loved ones by forming teams dedicated to their memories.

Money raised for the Caritas Fund is used to ensure that patients and families coping with a life-limiting illness receive the comfort, support and care they need.
