Letter to the Editor: Gun control activists slam vote that could arm teachers

On Tuesday, April 23, Florida lawmakers approved a bill that would allow teachers to carry firearms at school, if they have the backing of their local school boards. The Florida Senate was split 22-17 on the bill, and will now move to the House. House lawmakers are most likely to support the bill, and Governor DeSantis approved of the bill and he will sign. Gun control people had a hissy fit and attacked the vote on social media stating "#SB7030 passes the Senate by a vote of 22-17 despite opposition from students, parents and teachers." Some lady is worried what impact the Senate's vote might have on students of color. This Lady needs to spend some time at my store; the stories we are told by our friends of color here in Madison are horrible. When you need help, you need it now not 30 minutes from now. The Senate bill would expand on existing legislation that allows certain staff members to carry firearms. Introduced in the wake of the February 2018 Parkland shooting that saw 17 students and staff members die at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The latest proposal would require teachers who volunteer to be armed to pass psychological tests and complete a minimum of 144 hours of training; the bill split lawmakers along party lines. Senator Bill Montford, a Tallahassee Democrat, said teachers had criticized the bill, saying they had enough responsibility already without becoming armed guards. "What we are telling teachers is if you want protection for you and your children then you do it yourself." But Senator Ed Hooper, a Clearwater Republican, suggested a teacher may have been able to stop the Parkland shooter if the teacher had had a firearm. A recent state commission concluded some lives may have been saved by the presence of armed faculty members. Other prominent Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have said arming teachers would improve safety. But Parkland survivor and activist Alfonso Calderon challenged that idea in an interview with CNN's Don Lemon. "I don't know if Donald Trump has ever been to a public high school, but as far as I'm aware, teachers are meant to be educators," Calderon said. "They're meant to teach young minds how to work in the real world. They are not meant to know how to carry AR-15s. Parkland survivor Sari Kaufman criticized the latest bill stating "There is no evidence that this will make me or my classmates any safer. In fact, arming teachers ignores research that shows the presence of a gun actually increases the risk to students. Some School Boards slammed the result of the Senate vote on social media. In a tweet shared by Parkland survivor Jaclyn Corin, teacher and activist Nicholas Ferroni wrote: "Things teachers will do: Educate students, care about students, inspire students, feed students, nurture students, be there for our students. Things teachers will never do: carry a gun, because we care too much about our students to put them in harm's way." My thoughts are, they just don't care enough to protect the students from attackers. None of this tragedy would have happened in Parkland had those instilled to protect us had done their jobs. The FBI had been to the perp's home three times because of threats made to students. The Sheriff's deputies had been to his home forty five times also because of threats made to students. Why was nothing done? Well in 2010, Counties in South Florida implemented a policy that reduced the number of criminal reports in schools. This action creates the appearance of a reduction in crime at the school. What is really happening, is that crimes are not being reported as crimes, they are reported as disciplinary actions. Had they not started this silly program, the perp would not have been able to purchase a firearm. Therefore had the Government done their job none of this would have happened. As I wrote several weeks ago, in 1974 60 some students were killed in Israel. Israel trained and armed their Teachers. Twice in 45 years this scenario was tried again, Teachers killed both perp's before anything happened to their students. Also we never had this problem until ole Joe "now running for President again" instituted (Gun Free Zones) A reminder, (All mass murders have been committed in gun free zones) Therefore, liberals blame the firearm for mass murders, I wonder why that is? This is a volunteer action only, by caring teachers. -George Pouliotte
