Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968. -

The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills. -

PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES COURTNEY KEMP AGBOH (Creator, Showrunner, Executive Producer) Courtney Kemp Agboh started her career in the magazine world, publishing articles in GQ, Vibe, and Marie Claire. She then left New York to pursue television writing, starting out in comedy on “The Bernie Mac Show” (Fox), and transitioning into one-hour drama, with stints on “Eli Stone” (ABC) and “The Good Wife” (CBS), among others. She is the creator and show runner of “Power,” which in its first season doubled viewership from its premiere episode to its finale and generated the largest concentration of African American viewership of any scripted premium series since 2006. Kemp Agboh holds a B.A. from Brown University in English Literature and received her M.A. in English literature from Columbia University. She lives in Los Angeles. DAVID KNOLLER (Executive Producer, Director Episodes 203, 205) Working first as an actor in theater, television and film, David Knoller segued into live television producing, while still directing theater and teaching acting in the Los Angeles area. He produced Specials for CBS and HBO, and was soon asked to join Home Box Office as an executive. While at HBO, David produced the concert feature film Martin Lawrence: You So Crazy and the award winning mini-series “America’s Dream” with Danny Glover and Wesley Snipes. David also oversaw the productions of HBO’s “Comic Relief,” “One Night Stand,” “Women of the Night,” “Dream On” and “Larry Sanders,” along with pilots and series for its upstart HBO Independent Productions, which included FOX’s “Roc,” “Down The Shore” and “Martin”. -

July 14, 2019 Esther 4:1-16 PERIL FOR HADASSAH I have bad news and good news. The bad news is, somebody is going to die. The good news is, you get to decide who. Terrible! Straight from the halls of Hell. But for just a split second, before the soul can put up the shields, something inside starts to smile. For just one flashing moment before the shields snap up, can you feel the beginnings of a sardonic glee? What if God had attached a rider to the sixth commandment: “If you are very good and faithful, if you are hard-working and responsible, then once every fifteen years – without guilt, detection, or blame – you may, if you so choose, blink somebody out of this life.” I wonder if there is anybody here who would have exercised that option by now. I wonder if there is anybody here who would not have exercised that option by now. And how many of us think we would still be here? You probably would be. I know for certain that I would not still be here. We are deep into summertime, and in summertime I like to tell Bible stories. Most people in our time do not know the Bible stories as well as many people did a couple of generations ago, so it’s not that I think summertime is a good time to fool around or go off duty. The biblical stories carry a lot of basic meanings and foundational perspectives. They are supposed to be the common heritage – the common language – that makes it possible for us to communicate and to understand each other in matters of faith and religion. -

Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance. -

Copyright © 2015 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved 2 Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This study aims to compare the figures of Moses in the Exodus narratives and Queen Esther in the Esther narratives. The study will proceed to argue that Esther, a remarkable Jewish deliverer figure in the Persian period can be viewed as a reinterpretation of the Moses figure in the Exodus narratives. Within a broad analysis of these narratives, the researcher investigates how Esther fits into the Old Testament deliverance motifs. Commonalities between Moses and Esther and their parallels and characterization as Old Testament deliverer figures assist in drawing a comparative analysis between the two. The study proceeds to prove that Esther is a new Moses figure, arguing that the Esther narratives are presented deliberately in such a way that they reinterpret the Moses narratives. A survey of previous studies that investigated the two narratives provides further evidence for the view that the Esther narratives are reinterpreting the Moses narratives, and hence that Esther can be regarded as a new Moses in the Old Testament deliverance motifs. -
