Shenandoah University, 2004 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Theatre for Young Audiences in the Department of Theatre in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2007 ©2007 Jennifer Pedraza ii ABSTRACT In this study, I worked with an ensemble of teenagers from Ayts Chayim Messianic Synagogue in Boca Raton, Florida to develop an original Purim play to be presented for the congregation and the public. I specifically explored “What is theatre’s role as a worship tool in a Messianic Jewish Synagogue?” My ultimate goal in this process was to honor God through the creative arts, and I used the process of creating the play to discover the specific ways that theatre can be used as a worship tool, from script development to theatrical presentation. I hypothesized that theatre could be used as a worship tool if both the attitude of the artists is one of worship and the artists strive for excellence because it is ultimately for God. I furthermore hypothesized that worshipping throughout the process by way of the group’s teamwork, attitude, and quality of work would be an integral part of producing a successful product. I sought to discover specifically what theatre as a worship tool looks like in the context of a Messianic Synagogue and what practices I glean from models of Christian drama ministries and what practices emerge from my process that are unique to Messianic theatre when used as a worship tool. How can I infuse my spiritual foundation with my artistic training? The majority of this project focused on the process of creating the play, from writing the script to dress rehearsals. The ensemble met weekly to explore the themes of the biblical story of Esther, brainstormed ideas for our adaptation, developed a script, and executed production aspects such as acting and design elements. Simultaneously, I kept a rehearsal journal with reflections on each lesson and the process as a whole. I completed research on contemporary theories and practices of Christian theatre artists in order to compare and contrast different approaches to faith-based theatre; these approaches are described in this thesis and conclusions iii are made as to how this research can be applied to my study. At the end of the presentation, I conducted interviews with members of the ensemble and the leaders of the congregation to receive feedback about the process, final presentation, and their perception of how theatre may be used as a worship tool. In this thesis, I write about the experience as a whole, evaluating our ability to use theatre as a worship tool for this specific presentation. I then process the implications this project has for future Messianic Jewish theatre, as well as the project’s impact on my growth as a theatre artist. My final conclusions based on this experience are that theatre’s role as a worship tool is to create an atmosphere where people are comfortable worshipping. Furthermore, the process of creating the play helped the youth and I discover how to be effective “ministers” and artists that create an atmosphere of worship. Based on my research, I posit that theatre can play many “roles” in the context of a Messianic synagogue: a bypass, sandpaper, or light, to name a few. Finally, artists and places of worship have something to contribute to one another, but both parties must move forward with the understanding that the Scripture provides a theological framework from which to base artistic choices and that artists need to develop their own specific approach to theatre while suiting the mission, vision, and values of the host congregation. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The first acknowledgment goes to my Creator, the first and greatest Artist. Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair­ banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

    PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES COURTNEY KEMP AGBOH (Creator, Showrunner, Executive Producer) Courtney Kemp Agboh started her career in the magazine world, publishing articles in GQ, Vibe, and Marie Claire. She then left New York to pursue television writing, starting out in comedy on “The Bernie Mac Show” (Fox), and transitioning into one-hour drama, with stints on “Eli Stone” (ABC) and “The Good Wife” (CBS), among others. She is the creator and show runner of “Power,” which in its first season doubled viewership from its premiere episode to its finale and generated the largest concentration of African American viewership of any scripted premium series since 2006. Kemp Agboh holds a B.A. from Brown University in English Literature and received her M.A. in English literature from Columbia University. She lives in Los Angeles. DAVID KNOLLER (Executive Producer, Director Episodes 203, 205) Working first as an actor in theater, television and film, David Knoller segued into live television producing, while still directing theater and teaching acting in the Los Angeles area. He produced Specials for CBS and HBO, and was soon asked to join Home Box Office as an executive. While at HBO, David produced the concert feature film Martin Lawrence: You So Crazy and the award winning mini-series “America’s Dream” with Danny Glover and Wesley Snipes.     July 14, 2019 Esther 4:1-16 PERIL FOR HADASSAH I have bad news and good news. The bad news is, somebody is going to die. The good news is, you get to decide who. Terrible! Straight from the halls of Hell. But for just a split second, before the soul can put up the shields, something inside starts to smile. For just one flashing moment before the shields snap up, can you feel the beginnings of a sardonic glee? What if God had attached a rider to the sixth commandment: “If you are very good and faithful, if you are hard-working and responsible, then once every fifteen years – without guilt, detection, or blame – you may, if you so choose, blink somebody out of this life.” I wonder if there is anybody here who would have exercised that option by now. I wonder if there is anybody here who would not have exercised that option by now. And how many of us think we would still be here? You probably would be. I know for certain that I would not still be here. We are deep into summertime, and in summertime I like to tell Bible stories. Most people in our time do not know the Bible stories as well as many people did a couple of generations ago, so it’s not that I think summertime is a good time to fool around or go off duty. The biblical stories carry a lot of basic meanings and foundational perspectives. They are supposed to be the common heritage – the common language – that makes it possible for us to communicate and to understand each other in matters of faith and religion.

Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

The study will proceed to argue that Esther, a remarkable Jewish deliverer figure in the Persian period can be viewed as a reinterpretation of the Moses figure in the Exodus narratives. Within a broad analysis of these narratives, the researcher investigates how Esther fits into the Old Testament deliverance motifs. Commonalities between Moses and Esther and their parallels and characterization as Old Testament deliverer figures assist in drawing a comparative analysis between the two. The study proceeds to prove that Esther is a new Moses figure, arguing that the Esther narratives are presented deliberately in such a way that they reinterpret the Moses narratives. A survey of previous studies that investigated the two narratives provides further evidence for the view that the Esther narratives are reinterpreting the Moses narratives, and hence that Esther can be regarded as a new Moses in the Old Testament deliverance motifs.
