The paper compares the ranking of journals published in India with international level journals DLIS, Bharathiar University, using SJR. The paper reveals that in seven subject areas, journals published from Coimbatore India are nowhere comparable at the international level publications. SJR was developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google Analyzing the ranking and comparing the journals at the Page Rank. This indicator shows the visibility of the journals international level is very important for the researchers, funding contained in the Scopus database from 1996. SCImago is a institutions, professional societies etc. for many reasons. A research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones researcher gets many clues on the quality of journals. Funding Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III institutions understand the quality of research output of (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares, dedicated to information researchers and the assessment of quality of journals helps the analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualization professional societies to improve the quality of journals which techniques (2007-2016)4 Put. they publish. The experts in the analytics, bibliometric and scientometric fields are proposing many evaluating methods. SJR is a powerful scientific indicator and researchers across the One such powerful analytical tool which was conceived in 1955 world are widely using SJR indicators to access and analyze the by Eugene Garfield is the Journal impact factor (IF)1. The impact scientific domain especially to know the journal and country factor of a journal is calculated based on the citation analysis of rank. In this paper research scholar has made an attempt to Journal articles published in a particular period. Conversely many analyze the ranking and international status of social science other analysts criticizing the accuracy of IF. Falagas et al. Cantin, journals published in India and which are listed in the SJR and Munoz & Roa reviewed in their work that journal impact factors Scopus database. have been criticized by many analysts even though IF have been LITERATURE REVIEW widely accepted as the best instrument for evaluation for quality of journals2,3. We reviewed literature pertaining to this analytical study. Falagas et al discussed that the application of currently available Later many researchers found that IF is not only the right approach sophisticated algorithms of citation analysis allows for the to evaluate the quality of journals. Two more such methods which incorporation of the "Quality" of citations in the evaluation of evolved to evaluate the quality of journals are Journal Citation International Journal of Information Dissemination and Technology | October-December 2016 | Vol. 6 | Issue 4 251 scientific journals2. He compared the newly introduced SCImago sciences. The journals cover pure social science subject journal rank (SJR)| indicator with the journal impact factor (IF). constitutes 23% whereas arts and humanities represent 12.88%. The study by Zhao shows that SJR has a significant positive Ten journals (9.2%) belongs to the areas of Business, correlation with journal impact factor and h-index5. Combining Management and Accounting, 5.52% of the journals are from SJR and journal impact factor, we can distinguish between Economic, Econometrics and Finance area. Only three journals journal's popularity and prestige characteristics. Colledge in the from psychology and two journals are from decision science study introduced the two journal metrics which were endorsed by subject areas. SJR weights citations Subject No. of Journals %age according to the status of the citing journal and aims to measure journal prestige rather than popularity. The study by Decision Science 02 1.84 Abrizah compares the coverage, ranking, impact and subject Economic, Econometrics and Finance 06 5.52 categorization of Library and Information Science journals, specifically, 79 titles based on data from Web of Science (WoS) Multidisciplinary 32 29.44 and 128 titles from Scopus7. Comparisons were made based on Psychology 03 2.76 prestige factor scores reported in 2010 Journal Citation Reports Social Science 25 23 and SCImago Journal Rank 2010 and noting the change in Total 92 100 ranking when the differences are calculated. The rank normalized impact factor and the Library of Congress q Subcategories in SJR Classification System were used to compare impact rankings and subject categorization. There was high degree of similarity in rank Various subcategories of subject are listed in the Table 2. Arts and normalized impact factor of titles in both WoS and Scopus Humanities contains 13 subcategories as listed in the below databases. The searches found 162 journals, with 45 journals table. Table shows the humanities and social science Journals appearing in both databases. An analysis by Gupta shows India's published in India which are categorized in SJR according to their performance in social science using different quantitative and subject areas: Business, Management and Accounting has 10 qualitative measures. The study focuses on India's global subcategories; Decision Sciences having four subcategories; publication share rank and growth rate, citation quality, Economics, Econometrics and Finance has three subcategories international collaborative publications share8. whereas Psychology and Social Sciences contains 6 and 23 subject categories respectively. OBJECTIVES Table 2: Subcategories in SJR The study intends to understand the subject-wise distribution and S.N Subject Areas Sub-categories ranking of HSS journals published in India as per SJR score. Another important objective is to compare the ranking of journals 1 Arts and - Archeology (Arts and Humanities) published in India with international level using SJR.
