Bonavista Region Directory of Key Organizations for Regional Development 2 About This Directory This document is intended as a resource for local leaders in the Bonavista Region. It came out of a community-based public engagement project carried out collaboratively by Memorial University researchers and local organizations in the Bonavista Region.1 In this project, which also produced a Sustainability Report Card for the former Clarenville-Bonavista Rural Secretariat Region, the research team consulted with 14 local leaders across the region’s communities in Summer 2016 to compile a directory of key local organizations for future regional planning and development efforts. This directory also builds on previous efforts such as the Community Sector Council’s Cabot Loop Directory of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations.2 The directory includes local, provincial, and federal organizations with relevant regional development roles from the region as depicted below in Figure 1: Figure 1. Map of the Bonavista Region within the larger Clarenville-Bonavista-Isthmus Region, including municipalities and Local Service Districts. Credit: Myron King, Environmental Policy Institute, Grenfell Campus. This directory is organized into three key forms of community capital – including economic, socio- cultural, and natural capital – and lists identified local organizations whose work or mandate align most closely with these areas. For each organization listed, a number of relevant stocks are listed, or key priority areas for enhancing community capital in the region. For each organization, all publicly available contact information is listed, as well as a primary contact person if one was identified during local consultations. Please direct any questions about this directory to Brennan Lowery, PhD candidate, Grenfell Campus of Memorial University: [email protected] 1 Brennan Lowery and Dr. Kelly Vodden, “Moving Towards Sustainability in the Clarenville-Bonavista-Isthmus Region: Final Report,” Report to the Office of Public Engagement of Memorial University of Newfoundland (2017). 2 Community Sector Council of NL, “Cabot Loop Voluntary Clusters Project: Directory of Nonprofit and Voluntary Organizations,” compiled by Raelene Goosney, Jodi McCormack, Barry Pearce, and Louise Woodfine (2010). 3 Table of Contents About This Directory ..................................................................................................................................... 2 Economic Capital ........................................................................................................................................... 4 Local Organizations ................................................................................................................................... 5 Socio-Cultural Capital .................................................................................................................................... 8 Local Organizations ................................................................................................................................... 9 Ecological Capital ........................................................................................................................................ 18 Local Organizations ................................................................................................................................. 19 4 Economic Capital What is economic capital? The economic capital of the region includes not only money and investment, but also other key local assets that allow the regional economy to sustain itself and grow. The stocks of economic capital include things like the labour force, the skills of workers, local infrastructure, and financial resources such as investment and funding opportunities. Other factors that are important to regional economic health is the built environment, which in the Bonavista region has a strong heritage and economic value in the form of historic buildings, as well as new construction. A key driver of much of the region’s recent economic success is the wave of new entrepreneurial activity that is taking place in communities like Bonavista, Port Rexton, and Elliston. Finally, the overall structure of the regional economy is also important, since it determines whether the economy maintains its historic sectors like the fishery or diversifies into new sectors like tourism, real estate, or the arts. The region has many essential organizations who are leading efforts at maintaining and growing the regional economy, who are listed below in terms of the key stocks to which their work is most closely related. Many of these organizations, both local, provincial, and federal, also do work that is related to other important issues in socio-cultural and ecological capital, which will be discussed later. Socio-cultural capital refers to all of the systems and services that make the communities in the Bonavista Region vibrant and enjoyable places to live. It is based on the concept of social capital, which consists of the bonds, networks, and relationships that exist in society, as well as the overall level of trust within and between communities. Social capital is also about social equity and celebrating diversity, as well as the participation of citizens in governance and decision-making. Communities with strong social capital are safe and secure places, as well as communities where people have access to education and the development of skills and are able to maintain good personal
