Created by the Parliament of Canada as a Centennial project during the 1960s, the NAC has become Canada’s foremost showcase for the performing arts. Today the NAC works with thousands of artists from across Canada and around the world and collaborates with dozens of arts organizations across the country. The NAC is strongly committed to being a leader and innovator in each of the performing arts fields in which it works: classical music, English theatre, French theatre, dance, and variety and community programming. It is also at the forefront of youth and education activities, supporting programs for young and emerging artists, presenting programs for young audiences and producing resources and study materials for teachers and students. The NAC is the only multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre in North America and one of the largest in the world. Accountability and Funding The NAC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of the NAC’s total revenue, approximately half is derived from an annual parliamentary appropriation, while the other half comes from earned revenue— box office sales, the NAC Foundation, NAC catering, le café (restaurant), commercial parking and facility rentals. -

A Welcome Welcome to the 20th annual SummerWorks Theatre Festival. Toronto’s Indie Theatre and Arts Festival. Over the past three years, SummerWorks has evolved from an indie-theatre festival to an indie-arts festival. I believe that it’s important to continue to explore the necessity and relevance of the theatrical form: how can it contribute, reflect and parallel the world we’re living in? I became interested in what happens to the form when directly paralleled with other forms. Call it a social experi- ment, if you will – a laboratory on relevance and learning. Where do our forms intersect, and how can we use this to our advantage? We’ve been really excited by the results of this evolution, and this year’s Festival continues to build on these principles. Our Theatre line-up is very exciting. The work is strong, diverse, and brave. We also welcome four very impressive shows from outside Ontario in our National Series. See them all if you can. You won’t be disappointed. What are the ingredients that enable certain musicians to fill rooms and create that rare, emotional electricity? There are some obvious answers like: alcohol and rowdy behaviour – but there are also layers to this question that are connected to the visceral nature of the form. This year’s Music Series is the best yet. I hope you’ll take it in. The new Performance Bar brings three different art forms together on the same stage nightly over the course of the Festival. The glue? The National Theatre of the World. -

CURATING CANADIANNESS: PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING, FUSION PROGRAMMING, AND HIERARCHIES OF DIFFERENCE by © Rebecca Draisey-Collishaw A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador ABSTRACT “Fusion programming” is an approach to music broadcasting that was employed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) during the early years of the twenty-first century. It’s understandable as a response to systemic and systematic pressure to be “more multicultural.” It was about the artistry of musicians and entertainment of audiences, but fusion programming also served a didactic purpose for producers and listeners, participating in the production, elaboration, reinforcement, and/or deconstruction of existing cultural systems. Producing fusion programming involved bringing a minimum of two musicians/musical groups from different genres, languages, styles, scenes, and cultures into the same CBC-sponsored venue for the expressed purpose of performing together and discussing the challenges of collaboration. Performances, in many cases, were posited as “multicultural,” “cross cultural,” or “a collision of cultures,” and conversations framing the music often referenced diversity, multiculturalism, and difference, effectively mapping musicians’ positionality within Canadian society and geography. Much to our surprise (and pleasure), we seem to be garnering all kinds of national and international recognition in the form of Top 10 lists and musical and tourism awards for simply doing the things that we love to do. Our success rests in not being comfortable with what we did yesterday, but what we might be today and tomorrow. The 2010 event was spectacular again in the ways we have always expected: Five days of beautiful weather; a wonderful harmony between our audience, 2,500 volunteers, and artists; a wonderful musical experience and the ongoing joys of discovery offered up yet again by Chris Frayer, our Artistic Director guru; another record-breaking crowd that pushed us almost to site capacity; and another really successful year financially. -
